New Pioneer CDJ-2000 vs CDJ-900

Pioneer CDJ2000 vs CDJ900

By JJ Warwick

Last night we attended the worldwide launch of the new Pioneer CDJ2000 at the Ministry of Sound in London: a product launch tagged "Dawn of a New Species". Because Pioneer rule the world of DJ CD players, it was one of the most important events to happen in DJ equipment this year and they delivered with two products, the CDJ2000 and the CDJ900.

These products don't replace the CDJ1000 and CDJ800 which are the currently the industry leading CD players and have been for years. Both the CDJ2000 and CDJ900 are additions to the range bringing digital media control to the existing range.

Pioneer cannot be accused of being first to market with these players. This is perhaps unusual given how important the CDJ1000 was as a pioneering CD player. Pioneer had maybe become a touch complacent with the completely dominant position they hold in the market. They waited for Denon, Numark and the like to do the groundwork and have now delivered the killer blow. Pioneer have experimented with digital DJing as seen in the likes of the MEP7000 and CDJ400 but these new products aren't just a case of adding digital media support to an existing product; the CDJ has evolved.

If you need a list of all the new features, take a look at the product pages for the CDJ2000 and CDJ900 – where you'll find everything you need to know; manuals, videos, images etc. What we are going to look at here is the clever stuff and the differences between the two models.

First impressions are that they look very familiar: they both have the Pioneer jog wheel you know and love, the familiar transport controls and loops buttons. The CDJ2000 has a slightly larger footprint, to accomodate the large and gorgeous 6.1 inch full colour screen.

Rear connections include analogue and digital SP-DIF outputs, Ethernet ports (you can connect 4 units together via a ethernet hub) and USB for connection to a computer. They also have a Kensington lock slot, which is a nice touch.

The USB port brings HID (human interface device) support sending control data from the player to an attached computer, and so both players can control Traktor Scratch Pro, Serato Scratch Live, and Virtual DJ software natively without timecoded CDs. You can use the built-in soundcard on both the CDJ2000 and CDJ900 with Traktor and Virtual DJ removing the need for an external soundcard. You'll still need your SL1 or SL3 box if you use Serato Scratch Live as the hardware acts as a dongle for the software. Another nice touch is that the USB connection is bi-directional; this means the software can send information back to the player which is something you don't get with DVS systems.

All of this support for DVS software raises some interesting questions. Pioneer's presentation went to great lengths to highlight the fact that you don't need a computer to use the new products. They are keen to get DJs can get back to the art of performing rather than looking at a laptop. It is a bit of a mixed message to say "don't use a laptop" but you can if you want. This cross-compatibility is probably an admission of how significant DVS products have become.

Another big selling point is the new Rekordbox software included with both new players. Rekordbox allows you to manage your music before you gig, setting up loops and hot starts, then transferring your music onto your storage device. While it seems like a good idea in principal, I don't know how much use it will get in the real world. Pioneer confirmed that there will be Rekordbox support in future products.

We also really like the Needle Search even if we did see this a year ago on the Numark NS7. However, having the Needle Drop right next to the waveform display makes it much simpler to use.

Load times are virtually instantaneous – no need to wait unlike other media players on the market.

In terms of layout, changes have been kept to a minimum. Pioneer have managed to add the required navigation controls without making it too complicated.

Navigation has been made simple – it's simple to jump from a track on a CD to a track on a USB stick.

Ethernet isn't just a link connection. It's not available yet, but we believe the IP awareness provided will open up a whole new world in the future releases.

So what are the key differences between the CDJ2000 and CDJ900?

At first glance both machines seem to offer the same in terms of performance but what makes the CDJ2000 worth £400 more ?

Beautiful full colour display (the CDJ900 is flourescent)
Illuminated Jog Wheel/Navigation
Supports SD Cards (CDJ900 is USB only)
Adjustable Feel for the Jog Wheel
Hot Cues
Needle Search
It's hard to say if the features listed above are worth a £400 premium per deck, but after playing with both machines side by side, we would still go for the CDJ2000 as it just feels like a higher quality product. While the CDJ900 is excellent, the CDJ2000 is the superior of the two.

The CDJ2000 is scheduled to arrive in the UK in November.

The CDJ900 is scheduled to arrive in the UK in December.

Pioneer Rekordbox software will be bundled with the CDJ2000 and CDJ900. It won't initially be able on it's own – but that may change in the future.

Pioneer CDJ-900 and CDJ-2000 Digital Media Players

The new breed - an overview

There are very few products that can truly be described as industry standard. The Pioneer CDJ-1000 is however one of them. And like other such standards, there is an overwhelming theme - quality and simplicity.

Having totally revolutionised the DJ industry with the first CDJs, Pioneer have had to face the reality that media is old hat. So they camped out in the R&D lab, chin rubbed for a while and realised that while the foundation of the CDJ was strong, the process sucks. Who wants to burn endless CDs when you could just bung it all on a USB drive. Thus "prepare and play" was devised - a software solution to make digital audio a very slick reality on the CDJ.

So before I launch into this, I'll state this plain and clear - THIS IS NOT A REVIEW. Pioneer very graciously sent me a 2000 and 900 for a sneak peek first look at mechanically finished units, but not yet software or firmware finalised. They also lack manuals and have been abused inside inside Pioneer HQ and at BPM too. So I'm in no position to tear apart every feature with in depth comparisions to existing CDJs. It just would be fair.

A full review will follow in due course and carried out by an experienced Pioneer user who can give the comparisons between old and new that some of you need.

Rekordbox

As I just stated, I've got no GM software to play with but simply an early version to kick about. The principle is quite simple - Rekordbox takes your music, analyses it for BPM and beatgrids and sticks it on your USB media. You can add loops and cues as well as updating all the tags in your selected songs.

Pioneer very kindly prepared me some songs in a more recent version of Rekordbox to test to test out, but rather than send them comfort zone tracks, I shipped off 2 CDs full of old school Hip Hop. All came back waveformed, BPM'd and ready for action. In my own testing of this version, the software performed very quickly and did a great job of analyzing, beatgridding and BPMing, even if some of the intro threw the beatgridding off a little. Nothing a quick manual tweak couldn't fix.

Looking at the contents of a prepared USB drive did set my mind at rest. I had visions of some arcane proprietary format than needed a CDJ to work, put it all came back fully accessible - but all on one level. The key here is organisation so be absolutely sure that you tag your music properly and split into playlists for quicker organisation.

Based simply on a quick first view, Rekordbox is a very capable file manager that does what it's supposed to do perfectly. Again, no nitty gritty detail or scathing criticism - just an overview until the final release is available.

Using USB media

Using USB media is simple:

1. Plug in one USB per CDJ and use it right away
2. Share one USB device via the Pioneer Pro DJ Link via a crossover RJ45 cable
3. Grab a hub and share one USB device across up to 4 CDJs

I tried them all and it all worked perfectly, and importantly quickly too.

As a workflow for the needs of digital music users, Pioneer have clearly thought about making digital music really easy to use, and embraced the methodology of tagged music, playlists and the whole preparation of music principle. This is perhaps a key component of the success of DVS systems - the handling of digital audio is nailed in Traktor and SSL, and Rekordbox adopts a similar style. If you can't beat 'em, join 'em.

Formats

Despite being all about USB media, the CDJs still have the legacy bases covered. The 900 does all the flavours of CD that the old CDJs do, and the 2000 adds DVD too. Nothing seemed to be a trouble and everything was ready to use in around 6 seconds.

Obviously, USB features on both decks. My inquisitive nature begged me to plug an Apple iPod into both CDJs, and to my surprise (after a 20 second wait), the CDJs (yes both as it's shared over the link) could read all my audio with full tags and playlists as well.

The CDJ-2000 features SD cards. As a format, I'm not entirely happy with the durability, or your ability to remember to take them home after a gig either either. But they are at least hidden safe inside the 2000. I not a big fan of USB media sticking out of the top of any player - it's an accident or theft just waiting to happen.

But I see these as backup formats as you largely lose the huge Rekord box advantage. It's helpful to have this level of access, but if you're dropping that much cash, you'd better be using the USB workflow.

Hardware

Forgive me - I've played with CDJs at trade shows and had one in the lab for a week, but aside from that I'm a real CDJ noob. So this next section won't be a comparison of old to new, but will effectively be a set of fresh eyes upon fresh gear. I could treat each unit individually, but seeing as this is an overview and that the basics of them is much the same, it's easier to cover them off overall and pick out the differences where needed.

First impressions

At first glance, they're a natural evolution from the existing range. Rounder edges have been replaced by sharper angles and a glossier finish, giving a more modern and higher quality feel. There's still a lot of plastic though, but there always was and quality doesn't seem to have been an issue. Side by side, the 2000 has much more of a light show than the 900. In a dark booth, the 2000 is going to be easier to use.

This is where the real split in quality and cost occurs. The 900 gets a large Pioneeresque screen that splits between 4 line navigation and the usual playback info plus a lo res waveform display. The 2000 however is in a whole different league and takes over from the jog wheel in the unit domination league. It's extremely sharp, bright and displays 6 lines of track info plus other assorted animated graphically rich info. The bottom section returns to familiar Pioneer ground, but does display hi res waveform data. No zoom though - just the whole thing.

A very key feature related to the 2000 screen is the Needle Search feature. This is a touch sensitive strip with a dual dual use - for skipping through the waveform or acting as a search method. It only works in pause mode but does keep playing while you have your finger on the strip. For searching you can use it for a single letter or building words to narrow down searches - a quite awkward mini keyboard. It's a hugely useful feature, and does make music use much easier on the 2000. I made a quick video:

Pioneer CDJ-2000 Needle Search

The jog wheels remain laregly unchanged. Perhaps a tad smoother, and the 2000 gets some lights - but not in the same league as it's CDJ-400 sibling. The 900 does however have a distinct creative advantage over the 2000 - slip mode. It's way easier to demonstrate than describe:

Pioneer CDJ-900 Slip Mode

This is a real attraction for trick rather than mix based DJs, and most definitely something 2000 owner will wish they had. I tested this feature with Scratch Live and Traktor, and SSL worked in absolute mode only, but Traktor was successful in both.

In reality, I found very little difference in feel, other than at the extremes of tension adjustment. I found mixing to be very easy, but the wheel is a little heavy for sustained scratch action, but probably because the lack of motor means you have to push AND pull rather than just pull. This however is a highly subjective area, and something you'd need to check out for yourself.

Because pitch adjusting cue bashing videos are oh so dull, here's the answer to the burning question for so many people - can they scratch? Well they can, but I make no such statements about me:

Scratching on the Pioneer CDJ-2000

Drumming Z3MCs on the Pioneer CDJ-2000

Loops and Hot Cues

Despite their market dominance and off the scale price, the CDJs are really simple and offer little in the way of extras beyond the basic of track playing and navigation. There is however a real split in functionality between the 900 and 2000, and this centres around cues and loops.

Firstly, the 900 has no hot cues but advanced looping. The 2000 howver has 3 hot cues but basic looping n comparison. An odd choice considering that even the most basic media players have hot cues these days. The 2000's looping is nice though - an auto 4 beat loop that can be stepped down and up and tied directly to BPM.

This is an area that will confuse potential buyers. Hopefully further testing will show us why Pioneer have chosen to implement loops and cues like this.

Tagging

Not to be confused with ID3 tags is tagging. This allows you to build a playlist on the fly by simply selecting a track across your various media on different machines and tagging them - i.e. putting them into a temporary list for future use. A nice touch that underlines the digital workflow.

MIDI

The CDJs finally get MIDI. Plugging in the USB cable to my Macbook Pro showed the CDJ right away and ready for configuration. I fired up Traktor Pro and had a quick dabble and everything seemed to work fine, albeit with a dark screen simply indicating PC Mode. Of more interest is HID mode - this will allow direct high speed communication between computer and CDJ. This should make the jog wheel work and the screen interact properly.

But my time was tight with the CDJs so I wasn't going to spend too much time with MIDI learn making them work perfectly. I configured a handful of controls and they worked fine. I'm sure the various manufacturers will be issuing updates to their software in due course.

DVS Usage

This seems largely academic really. Timecode CD use is likely to be a second rate solution given that HID mode is in effect - but not yet supported in the software I have. I fired up SSL and Traktor, both worked with a tiny bit more latency than timecode vinyl, but things like looping and hot cues only worked in absolute mode. Slip Mode does work too, but again only in absolute mode.

I wonder though if DVS usage is a benefit on a CDJ. You pay a heap of cash for a lot of "prepare and play" functionality that isn't needed because your DVS has it all covered. Seems like a waste really.

And to clarify this once and for all - despite what the original Pioneer demo video may have inferred, you still need the SL-1 or SL-3 interfaces to run Scratch Live on the new CDJs. No ifs, no buts and no hope of just downloading the software and trying it out. You need Rane hardware to run Scratch Live software. End of discussion.

Odd differences

Forgive me for donning my time served production engineering white coat for a moment, but I'm irked by the lack of standardisation and cost savings that possibly could have been made. Here was a perfect opportunity to have 2 different units built on the same foundation - same base, buttons, screen cover etc which would have instilled familiarity across the units and importantly reduced production costs. But there appears to be only a common jog wheel plus a handful of shared buttons.

And that price...

I know Pioneer hate me bringing this up, but it needs saying. Pioneer have an unashamed self cultivated "professional" tag, and make no secret of wanting to own the high end club market - and it's this aspirational element to Pioneer products that reinforces the importance of perceived value over true value. But you can buy a pair of its nearest competitor for the price of a single CDJ-2000 - and that competitor is arguably better features wise too. A bitter pill to swallow in these cash strapped times.

That said, CDJs have always been expensive, and I've never heard of anyone who felt shortchanged, and the other industry standard share the same top end price bracket too.

Summing Up

So the "new species" campaign was less about adding stuff to the existing models and more about revolutionsing the workflow from CDs to all digital. And Pioneer have succeeded in doing just that. I feel that the prepare and play principle concept has been very well implemented, the USB usage of sharing across 4 decks is incredibly good, and the familiarity of the new CDJs is very much in line with the ideology of small steps but still keeping it very simple. They're certainly very nice to work with - track navigation has been made very easy on both units which is the key thing about the USB workflow. There's no point in having USB devices full of music if you can't use it.

Ultimately though, this has been a pointless exercise in wanton wordery. We all know that when it comes to CDJs, people will simply cast aside their usual review-scouring cautiousness and just buy them anyway. And this is what defines an industry standard - iconic branding with reassuringly expensive quality, reliability and simplicity. Pioneer did it with CDs, and now they will do it in the entirely digital domain.

Make no mistake - the new CDJs will define the next club standard and establish the future of DJ digital audio.

Gallery

I threw together a handful of pics - nothing too special as Pioneer already have a heap of glossy ones of their own. And forgive the somewhat battered appearance. They've been through an awful lot in their short existence.

gue by the way baru beli cdj900s

mini review:
menurut gue ini cdj solid banget, sebelum ini gue pake cdj400, sebelumnya cdj800mk2 (gue jual pas pindah dari sydney ke singapore - kegedean ga muat di koper) and sebelumnya 800mk1 -  so far ini the best one

Appearance: Glossy black - ini cdj rata2 surfacenya itu yang mengkilap gitu (except for some part at the top) - this could be good or could be bad - pas baru sih bagus ya, tapi lama2 sidik jari pada nempel semua (jadi harus siapin kayak lap buat kacamata gitu yang halus biar gak scratch pas di lap hahaha)   bagian layarnya apa lagi - very shiny when new tapi kalo dipegang dikit (apalagi kalo abis scratching lama2 en tangan agak keringetan - sidik jari dimana2!)

Layar LCD:  Item putih gak kayak cdj2000, tapi buat browsing files itu enak banget, gak kaya di cdj800 pas masukin cd mp3 - mata bisa pegel nyari tracknya - di cdj900 enak  (apalagi kalo pake rekordbox)   kalo abis dianalyse pake rekordbox waveformnya juga keliatan - dan loadnya cepet banget - gue coba2 pake lan cable (dikasih di boxnya) untuk connect 2 cdj900 pake Lan cable - the response time is very fasT!! So basically you only need one USB Stick and both cdjs can read it (must be paired with another 900 or a 2000)

just my two cents ;) if any question about the 900 can ask me

First Traktor and now SSL - CDJs officially love DVSs

When Pioneer teased and then finally released the new species of CDJ, the overwhelming feeling was one of sticking a middle finger up at pretenders to the Pioneer club throne i.e. vinyl wielding DVS systems. But times have very rapidly changed, and rather than alienate a massive and growing market sector, Pioneer have gone to great lengths to ensure that their CDJs snuggle up very happily with the market leaders via the medium of HID. Traktor did properly in v1.2.6, and now the yet to be released for a while v2.1 of Scratch Live.

Nutshell version - Pioneer have new firmware for the CDJs that will make them interact with SSL v2.1 more than ever before, and because of HID you don't need the timecode CD. But you'll still need the necessary Rane hardware to enable SSL, even if it's just hanging off the back and acting as a dongle.

Things do look good for the CDJ/DVS marriage. A CDJ-2000 review is coming that contains a section on using Traktor v1.2.6 via HID - and it fairs pretty well.

Here's what Pioneer have to say:

PIONEER CDJ -2000/900 FIRMWARE 3.1 WORKS IN UNISON WITH SERATO SCRATCH LIVE 2.1
Pioneer and Serato deliver the ultimate club-standard software and hardware integration

Pioneer DJ today announces new CDJ-2000 and CDJ-900 firmware that adds support for rekordbox Link and Scratch Live 2.1. It features enhanced HID Technology for DJ software, along with even more player features, like 8-Beat Auto Loop on the CDJ-2000 and increased BPM display accuracy.

First up, rekordbox Link bridges the gap between our hardware and rekordbox software to become the easiest way of playing digital music. With rekordbox installed, wherever you find the new CDJ-900s / CDJ-2000s, you can perform instantly with just one standard network cable. The major advantage is that music is played on the CDJs, not in the software, so there's no need to export.

Since the launch of the CDJ-2000/900, Pioneer has worked with the leading software companies to deliver the ultimate digital media player and controller experience. Unlike existing Midi controllers, the CDJs feature HID control that enables enhanced, two-way, low-latency data communication.

Developed together with Serato Audio Research, Pioneer's new CDJ-2000/900 firmware v3.10 enables software to use the built-in color displays. Detailed track information, text, album artwork*, track overviews, cue/loop points and other track information for quicker visual feedback and enhanced DJ performance. In addition, checking playback status and selecting tracks can all be done directly on the CDJ players, minimizing the need to browse through a computer screen.

Unlike any other DJ controller, the CDJ-2000 is the first to use a full colour display to show track information and artwork from DJ software. Not only that, the browsing experience is displayed directly on the deck, so you can browse and select Scratch Live crates, right from the player." – commented Product Support Specialist, David Eserin.

Serato Audio Research have implemented advanced HID technology to offer the best experience for Scratch Live users. Pioneer's CDJ-2000/900 players (updated with firmware v3.10) will work in perfect sync with the Scratch Live software Version 2.1, which delivers the best integration of our club-standard hardware and software to date.

The CDJ-2000/900 will now enable DJs to operate Scratch Live Version 2.1, together with official Rane hardware, without the need for timecode control discs. Scratch Live's functions will automatically link to the corresponding controls of the CDJ-2000/900 players when a computer running the software is connected through the players' USB connection. In addition, functions such as tempo adjustment, play/cue and loop can be made without a computer keyboard or mouse.

Pioneer CDJ-2000/900 firmware v3.10 is planned for release on July 12, 2010 and will be a free download from our new global homepage www.pioneerdj.com The free Scratch Live v2.1 software update is planned for release in Quarter 3 of 2010 from Serato Audio Research. Check www.serato.com for more information.

well pertama2 maaf kalo munculin lagi thread lama , gw cm mau review CDJ 2000 + Serato Scratch Live HID Mode

menurut gw , its amazing !!! 4 thumbs up buat serato and pioneer , smua fungsi dan interface serato bener2 di terjemahin ke cdj , browsing , cue points , looping smua bisa di lakuin dari cdj , bener2 ga perlu nyentuh laptop kecuali search lagu via keyword , dan smua tombol di cdj bisa di mapping lagi buat kontrol fx serato

sangat2 responsif dan akurat , bahkan trik2 cdj yang dulu ga bisa di manipulasi software skrg bisa via cdj (wide loop bending, motor run, long brake down n build up)

so serato + cdj 2000/900 = perfect !!! bravo pioneer

klo gw pake traktor trus ketemu cdj 2000 mending gw taro lagu2nya di hard disk atau usb sih... lebih enyaaaakkkkk... hehehe

@bayu udah nyoba enak sih pake usb , kalo buat nge guest maen sejam dua jam ,resident gig, daily 5 hour set ? rekues ? waduuh searching lagunya pe-er pake usb :p

dvs just the way to go for me homie  ;)

The CDJ has 35 midi trigger points. So you can assign and control hardware/software that is midi capable!

"Is the pitch tempo the same"
Actually glad you asked because we have improved it even more that the already wonderful pitch on the mk3. Now you have a finer resoltion as we have not HALF frame increments. 1 second = 72 frames. Now you can do HALF a frame (.5)

Media format compatability
What kind of media can you plug into it and can more than 2 players share the same USB trax

"Noticed on the vid it said Advanced Jog Adjust...what does that mean"
The 1000Mk3 has jog adjust. On the CDJ-2000 we've improved the adjust by adding a greater/lesser resistance to give you more flexibilty

What is the CDJ-900 Slip mode?
When you engage slip mode, using the player to loop, scratch or reverse will maintain the realtime play position of the audio as if you had never entered those modes. In other words, if you were to create a loop of "1, 2, 3, 4" and loop it once, while the loop is playing, you don't hear the song progressing through "5, 6, 7, 8", and when you exit the loop, the next thing you hear is "9, 10, 11, 12".

Essentially, it allows the current track to keep playing underneath while you pause, scratch or spinback on the platter. When you release, the track picks up exactly where it should as if it had kept on playing. It's quite simple, but instantly understood when you try it for yourself.

PS: The CDJ-2000 DOES NOT have "Slip Mode"

Pioneer CDJ-900 Slip Mode

How exactly to you connect CDJ-2000 / 900 to Other DJ midi software ie CUE?

Hi, I recently saw people using serato linked to cdj 2000 via usb cable to play video files for their shows, my question is would that be possible with rekordbox in the future ?

Joachim garraud playing video files:

P.S People should be happy that cdj 2000's can be used like the dvjs instead of complaning all the time!

Pioneer DJM-2000 firmware v2

Pioneer DJM-2000 firmware update version 2.0

The Pioneer DJM-2000 is the DJ equivalent of owning a starship. It is just so crammed full of nextlevelness that a few words to introduce it cannot do it justice. It is safe to say that this particular Pioneer product matches the great expectations raised by its lofty price. I'm sure than many of you have simply skipped past old stories of this mixer, if only because there's no way you could afford such a thing, but take a look at the above video to see what the latest landmark firmware v2 update can do.

When I see this kind of gear in action, I feel like immersing myself in all the goodness that such a beast can offer. There's something quite magnetic about funnelling music through something that steps out from its mixer metaphor into something more like a workstation. Perhaps when I get office space that I can actually swing a cat in, I might say pretty please to Pioneer and get one in for a dabble.

Anyway, the clip is worth a watch to see how the top end of the DJ tech food chain does things. Daunting for many, but likely to cause trouser trauma in most I feel.

If you fancy stepping into the set of a sci-fi film, the DJM-2000 will set you back £1749/€1999/$2499.
