In a world that is changing so rapidly and seemingly ignoring design rule books, it's hard to predict exactly what might come next. But my crystal ball appears to be working just fine right now (see previous BPM story), as Pioneer have just released info on some new headphones coming our way soon. And in a break from the norm, the new HDJ-500s will come in 3 colours.

Here's the European PR:

The stylish new HDJ-500 entry level DJ headphones are the latest arrival to expand our headphone series.

Unlike previous models, it will be available in three distinct colours: red, black and white. The HDJ-500-R (Red) / HDJ-500-K (Black) will be in stores in November, with the HDJ-500-W (White) following in January 2011.

Designed to be as usable in the club as they are at home or on the go, the HDJ-500 is set to invigorate the headphone market.

Black, red and white: for the club, at home or on the go

They fully utilise the research and technology of our flagship model, the HDJ-2000, to offer both style and substance in a lightweight design.

Engineered for dance music

The HDJ-500 is sound engineered to strongly reproduce the low and mid level frequencies needed for accurately monitoring dance music when DJing. It reproduces a rich low-range and increases the sound pressure by utilising our newly developed 40 mm diameter driver unit and by narrowing the ear pad opening, giving you crystal clear sound, whatever your needs.

Durable and flexible: the HDJ-500 rotating arm is completely adaptable to your style

With its rotating arm structure, the HDJ-500 is also completely adaptable to your personal DJing style.

Top sound quality and style are no longer reserved solely for professional level DJs, but are now available to anyone who wants to get the most out of their dance music.

And to satisfy the biggest part of the skratchworx readership, here's the US blurb:

Pioneer Electronics (USA) Inc.'s Professional Sound and Visual Division continues to lead the DJ market with the introduction of its HDJ-500 series (MSRP $125) headphones, designed for exceptional fidelity, style, comfort and affordability. Available in red, black and white, the new headphones provide maximum performance and versatility for any type of use, from DJing to casual listening.

"With the popularity of DJing on the rise, we're excited to offer products like the new HDJ-500 at affordable price points so more people can take part in the art form. The headphones are engineered to assist entry-level DJs with the mixing process by enhancing the low and mid frequencies of music," said David Arevalo, senior marketing manager, Professional Sound and Visual Division for Pioneer Electronics (USA) Inc.

    Refined Design

The HDJ-500 DJ headphones adapt the styling and performance cues of Pioneer's top-of-the-line HDJ-2000 headphones.

Designed with maximum comfort and reliability in mind, the HDJ-500 uses comfortable urethane pads for the ears that allow the headphones to mold around the user's head and ears for a snug and slip-resistant fit.

Furthermore, the urethane pads are wrapped in great quality leather, providing greater feel and extended comfort. The main structure of the headphones is crafted of magnesium alloy for light weight and durability, making them great for travel and long periods of use.

    The Sound Difference

The HDJ-500's stylish design is matched with great sound quality providing clear audio reproduction, especially in the critical low and mid frequency ranges that are key for remixing. By combining 40 mm diameter drivers, thick 19 μm (micrometers) diaphragm and a copper clad aluminum wire (CCAW) voice coil, the headphones can efficiently reproduce the lower frequency audio range. Snare and kick drum sounds are more clear making it easier for even the most novice DJs to match the tempo of tracks.

    Versatility

For maximum flexibility during performances, the HDJ-500 features a rotating arm structure that allows the user to rotate the right earpiece forward and back by as much as 60 degrees. At that position, the flexible headband maintains enough side pressure to allow the DJ to listen to audio on just one side of the headphones.

The headphones include two interchangeable cords providing freedom of movement during performances. The traditional 1.2 meter coiled cord (extends to 3m) is perfect for regular DJ performances, while the 1 meter straight cord is ideal for leisure listening.

The black HDJ-500-K and the red HDJ-500-R will be available in November 2010 at a manufacturer suggested retail price of $125. The white HDJ-500-W will be available in January 2011 at a manufacturer suggested retail price of $125.

    Specifications:

Style: Fully enclosed dynamic stereo headphones
    Frequency Range: 5Hz–28,000Hz
    Impedance: 45Ω
    Max Input: 2000 mW
    Output Sound Level: 105 dB
Driver Unit: 40 mm dia. dome type
    Plug: 3.5 mm dia. 3P mini-plug (gold-plated, screw-in)
    Weight: 6.8 ounces (without cord)
    Included: 6.3 mm dia. 3P plug adapter (gold-plated, screw-in)
    Cords: 1.2 m side mount coil cord (extended 3 m), 1 m straight cord

Look like pretty high spec cans here. 2 removable cables, very lightweight (around the same as the Sennheiser HD25s), low power and fully adjustable earpieces. The construction looks to remove much of the inherent hinge issues that plague headphones, but time will tell on the front. Let us remember, that these are Pioneer's entry level headphones, so let's not expect them to last for decades.

To be honest, the release of the HDJ-2000 did make the rest of the headphone range ripe for a makeover. The 2000s and new 500s certainly make the venerable HDJ-1000s look like archaic rubbish these days. Perhaps there will be a new 1000 at some point.

I do hope that these varieties of HDJ-500 don't make up the "3 brand new products" at BPM. That's cheating.
