Before we proceed we should all take a moment to pump our brakes and tread carefully as we're about to enter the rumour zone. Oooooooh. As with most things Daft Punk related, this bit of gossip should be taken warily as it's far from official. But nonetheless the word is out that the French robot crew is putting together their next LP and apparently they're recruiting some guest players to the recording process.

The news comes from French site LesInRocks which reports that the masterminds behind Daft Punk, Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, have begun recording their fourth album, with Animal Collective mainstay Panda Bear contributing in an unknown capacity, as are an unspecified collective of production staff behind Michael Jackson's Thriller opus.

"The duo is already in Paris for a fourth studio album, on which musicians in the flesh bone and replace the machines," reads the piece – thanks Google Translate. "And not just any musicians, since they whisper the names of the top names in action behind Michael Jackson's Thriller or Panda Bear , lead singer of NYC Animal Collective. Other musicians are expected to join this strange crew."

Before you can go all Admiral Ackbar on us and tell us this is a trap, we agree that this does indeed smell a bit fishy but given that the hearts of ITMers tend to skip a beat at the mention of Daft Punk we thought we'd at least address the rumour.

While we can hardly believe some undisclosed 'whispers' on some random French site, there's a glimmer of promise in this as Daft Punk had said that during the making of their Tron Legacy score they had been "working on some of [their] own music concurrently". What's more in that same interview the duo expressed their desire to explore new territory on their next release, making collaborations at least in the realm of possibility.

"We like the idea of trying to experiment and do different things we haven't done in the past," Bangalter said. "I imagine [selling out] would be finding a successful formula and sticking with it and always doing the same thing. That is not what is exciting to us."
