New Music "TRAP"

A genre that is mutating quickly and gaining exposure through the ever expanding world of hybrid dance genres is Trap Music.

So what the hell is trap music?

The origin of the Trap genre is characterized by an aggressive attitude in sound, incorporating brass, triangle, snappy snares and hi hats, loud kicks, and booming 808′s from the Southern Crunk scene. Traditionally speaking, rappers like Waka Flocka, Young Jeezy, Lex Luger and Gucci Mane would be classified as the original sound of Trap, however, the genres recent evolution has seen the popularity of techno and dub sounds incorporated more significantly into the overall trending sound.

In laymen's terms, Trap music would be best described as a recipe;

1/3 hip hop (tempo and song structure similar) – however vocals are usually pitched lower or higher
1/3 Electronic synths (The modern mutation of trap has seen the synth prodding become more prominent)
1/3 dub (Low frequency focus and strong emphasis on repetitiveness throughout a song)

Modern producers of the sound championed within the dance and electronic spectrum have been breakout artists RL Grimes, TNGHT – the collaborative project between Hudson Mohawke and Lunice, Flosstradamus and Brooklyn bruiser Baauer.

Local acts Spenda C of The Mane Thing and the What So Not duo made up of Chris Emoh and Flume have been doing Australia proud, exporting an edgy dance powered sound.

Many are pointing to the rise in popularity akin to the new dubsep, sometimes labelled brostep that shook the world for its noisy and hyper induced global acceptance that took 2011 and 2012 by storm.
