The series of the Balance compilation continues. This time, for the eleventh volume, the guts from Balance chose Luke Fair to be the master of ceremonies. Luke Fair is a DJ and producer based in Canada. This isn't his first compilation. He has also mixed Original Series 3 at Bedrock or In House We Trust 3 mixed together with Desyn Masiello.
The compilation has two mixes like EQ Recordings used us. The first CD starts slowly and warm, with an ambient from Voom Voom and the track Vampire Song. In the first part of the mix we get a slow house, with a low tempo, so the listeners can easily catch the atmosphere. Nothing is sudden, nothing is forced, but also nothing is too special, if you are in search of club music. We find here house and funky house and artists like Wamdue Project, Hypnos or Mitsu. This CD is perfect for listening in a pub or at the sea side in the morning. In the second part of the mix, the music becomes more fresh and rapid. In some places we can find some progressive house and even some electro. Here we have productions like Amphytrion from Tiger Stripes, Burnin' from Kinka and a remix produced by Ruhig Brauner for Robag Wruhme's KTB. With the last two tracks the atmosphere starts to warm up and we find here that Luke Fair how he is when he mixes live. Nightriders with the track Getaway and Tom Novy with an instrumental of the track Unexpected. All in all, the first CD is perfect to listen at home or in the car, but just occasionally because otherwise it can become annoying. In a few words, this first CD is house, funky house, , progressive house, warm, perfect for the summer, friendly and flexible.

For the second CD, Luke Fair starts with two masters Alexander Kowalski and Joris Voorn who together produced the track She's Worth It. Time and Space is the second track produced by Francois K. This is a track that grows the intensity built until now. If we scan a little the mix, we can find a remix of Ian Pooley and later on another remix signed by Elextroworld mix for the track Playing with Fire. After some electro at the middle of the set, the mix comes back to its initial form and continues to amaze with the musical selection, but also with the way the tracks are arranged. This second mix is surely better than the first one, especially if we consider the energy it gives.

Throughout this mix, Luke Fair managed to bring into public's attention some very interesting artists with their productions. So this is maybe why this compilation should retain your attention for at least once.

An artist presentation for Nick Warren would take probably double the space of this article, so it's useless to start speaking of everything this DJ meant to house music throughout the years. Being a true partner to the Global Underground foundation right from the start, he mixing the 30th edition of the GU: City series doesn't come quite as a surprise. Haven't heard a mix for quite some time now, I didn't really knew what to expect from this album. Did Nick Warren stay true to his unique progressive style? DHad he evolved on the electro-tech note that's so popular nowadays? I popped the discs in and waited to see.
If anyone remembers the GU024 mixed in Reykjavik, then the first disc won't come as something strange, hearing a down-tempo mix in a GU series. It starts moody and atmospheric with SPACE GYPSIES – "AFTER, a Balearic-like song which gets the vibe right in and sets the layer for what's next to come. Nice piece for a lounge-like chill out mood. It continues nicely with TRIPSWITCH - STRANGE PARALLELS, a really eased-up song that could very easily rock you to sleep. Beat comes back with AUDIOGLIDER - ZUSAMMENALLIEN, a very melodic and dreamy piece of work, which is so nostalgic and sweet it almost makes you want to cry. Very nice job here by selecting this one. NOVE – SEDATIVES follows up with a breaky rhythm and infused sounds, uplifting a bit the mix, but showing nothing new really, it's just a pass-by tune in my opinion. However, it does the job, being a true down-tempo melody, which falls right into place on this CD. The set marches on with AUDIOGLIDER – WHISKERS, a guitar ibiza-ean track, which also features vocals. It sounds pretty good and keeps the note of the first songs. The mixing for the track to follow is horrific and does no honor for Mr. Warren, as we pass to JOEY FEHRENBACH- BEING AROUND YOU, a nice tune that kind of remembers me of Chicane 7, 8 years ago. It's all beach style with JUSTIN ROBERTSON - REVTONE (ULRICH REMIX), and that's not bad at all, but it's kind of monotonous and quite out of place. TRIPSWITCH - ROLL YOUR OWN sounds like music from a movie, but again us find vocals, and that saves a bit of this mix-CD; also atmospheric samples here and a lot of them. You might find this interesting. Moving on, CATES AND DPL - LIVING IN A brings that sooooo out-of-fashion guitar, and it gets me thinking that chill out music isn't quite as it used to be, it's all come down to very boring tracks, and the same old clichés; not very nice in my opinion. AURTURUS- LONELY PLANET contradicts me though. Very cool song, sounds even a bit dancy, probably preparing us for the second disc of GU030. So does the last tune, JOEY FEHRENBACH- BEHOLD, which is again a great piece of work. These last two tunes really save a lot of the already shattered appearance of this mix-cd.

So far, not so good. But it's time for the "club" disc, the second one. Starts kind of minimalist and gets right away to business with AUGUST - I MISS, an eased-up song with a hidden beat deep down there, on which minimal samples are layered one after another. It continues the note from the first CD mostly. BLUE FOUNTAIN - SWEEP is the second piece, a dreamy one, with vocals all around, but sounds like a very common deep house tune, bringing nothing special to the mix. ZUR-FACE - COSMOPOLITAN DRINK lets the pressure rise and gives rhythm and sense to this poor start. Let the dance tunes begin already! It sounds pretty well, but this is clearly NOT the Nick Warren sound i grew up to. Anyway this is better than the first two tracks, it has spine, and most of all, beat! As expected, the all mighty minimal-electro could have not be missed here, and it comes strong in the form of ESSENVEE - HEAD DOWN (JAY P), a robotic-like song which will surely get on your nerves. It's not even a cool song, and this increases the bitter taste i have in my mouth form this album so far. POLE FOLDER - B SIDE saves a bit for this second installment, a true progressive tune indeed, vocals included. It's nice, really nice; keeps on growing, keeps on bringing beat after beat. Two of my favorite producers, 16BL step in with NEPTUNE, a veeeeery nice piece of music. This is what i wanted to hear, but although it's pretty late for this album, it still makes me want to dance. Driving, sweet, proggy to the core, this production could very easily be my favorite of the mix. A second tune from them, 16BL - NONE VERBAL follows up. Talked vocals are not out of fashion and these ones fall right into place. NICE NICE NICE! You'll have fun on this. HABERSHAM AND KAZELL - PARADISE ROCKERS soon come in with a break beat sound, the one we're already used to, but this is houseier than before. a bit of dub, a bit of everything in there, it's diverse and special, very good tune indeed. MOLDAN & ISMAE - FIVEFIVEZERO and the surprises keep on coming. This one is my choice for the favorite tune, it's a splendid progressive beat that keeps on rolling and coming at you with no mercy. Perfect feature in the album, too bad it stinks overall; this is a very under-estimated song unfortunately. You'll love it from the very start, for its definite sound and courageous synths. MIIKA KUISMA - ONE MORNING BY THE RIVERSIDE unfortunately breaks it, and it breaks it definitive. Really bad choice of putting this song here... OHMNA - I'M LOST tries to save a bit of what's left of this disc and it does with a prog trance sound that should have come in way back... EELKE KLEIJN - 8 BIT ERA DUB is another nice track, but again, too late for them. Mr Warren should have thought well when he arranged the tunes for this second CD. TANNEN - BLACKOUT ends the album in a respectable manner, leaving room for hope of something much better than this.

GU030, I'm sorry to say, it's a disappointment, really. First of all, this is NOT the Paris sound anyone would have had in mind, second of all the mixing is common and poor, tracks on the first disc are so simple and ordinary that you don't even know when they pass along, tracks on the second one are (with few exceptions), well, uninspired.

It is with great regret that I state "Warren era is long gone, and he should have stopped after GU028 in my opinion". In hope that Adam Freeland will bring something new to the GU series with his installment in New Mexico, I strongly recommend this album only to the Nick Warren fans.

Electronic Beats together with Slices released in October a documentary DVD about Richie Hawtin's life. 'Pioneers of Electronic Music' wants to be a series of DVDs about the most famous artists of electronic music. The first volume is dedicated to one of the founders of minimal techno, Richie Hawtin.

It is hard to see all the important details at an artist when you interview him. Most of the times you have little time or he isn't in the mood of talking, or he is thinking at something else or he is nervous. So the interviews are nothing else but a short question and answer session about next releses, about how the artist started; things that can be obtained form the artist's biography and discography. This DVD changes exponentially Richie Hawtin's image, especially for those who know him less as a person.

Richie Hawtin lives an enviably stylish existence in an unlikely and unexpected place. His refurbished home sits across from a throbbing factory in a spare, industrial zone of Windsor, Ontario. The 97-year-old building was once a firehouse in the days when its firewagons were drawn by horses. But in the 21st century, what used to be a hayloft has been transformed into Hawtin's striking, uncluttered, red-and-black apartment; the horses lived directly below in what's now his state-of-the-art recording studio.

Concentrated more on the human side of the artist, the documentary shows some scenes of Richie Hawtin's life, scenes that if they hadn't happened, he wouldn't be where he is now.   


Those who don't know much about his activity as a producer and a DJ, should know that he is the fonder of Minus Records (M_nus), he is the con-fonder of Plus 8, together with John Aquaviva and the character behind the famous Plastikman. With a 20 year musical carrier, Richie Hawtin is presented in this film form his friends, family and acquaintances' perspectives.

The beginning

We are talking about a 36 year-old British artist. How did it all start? Some scenes with Richie when he was a little child, together with his brother Mathew on a slay then in his father's electronic workshop, a big fan of techniques and technology. His father has always been a perfectionist and a big music fan, which influenced a lot his 12 sons. The film presents some scenes with Richie's first computer, at the age when he was very young. Then, how he got to Detroit, a city of gangsters in the '80. This is where Richie started doing music. He himself confesses that he wouldn't be doing what he does now, at such a high level, if he hadn't lived in Detroit. There he starts having contact with the clubbing scene, a very shy one at that time. At the age of 17, Richie Hawtin was seen as a dork and that because of his shy and neglected look, as he says himself. He used to just sit and watch the DJ mixing in an underground club in Detroit. Richie was seen at that time as a dork who just sits and stares at the DJ. At a certain moment, the DJ pulls Richie at his desk and lets him mix, until he comes back form the toilet. And that is when everything started. Not long after, Richie starts organizing small parties in a club that was almost gone. He gets money form the club's promoters and manages to bring Jeff Mills to mix.

Another important period of Richie's life was New York, where he was rejected and got banned for a few years, because of some conflicts in Oklahoma at that time. Meeting with John Aquaviva is essential for the young Hawtin. They are both enthusiastic and they start producing music in Detroit, but nobody takes them into consideration. This is one of the reasons why Plus 8 is created, one of the record labels that represent 'the future sound of Detroit'.

Parents

Richie Hawtin has always had a strong relationship with his parents, which definitely represented a big advantage for him. His father had been the one who woke up in Richie the passion for technology and music and his mother helped him organize parties. There were times when she would stay at the entrance and sell tickets. Richie's mother never believed that a computer could offer Richie a future and could make his passion a job. Richie's brother, Mathew, has also been one of the persons who influenced him a lot in producing and creating minimal.  "This DVD changes exponentially Richie Hawtin's image, especially for those who know him less as a person. "
Plastikman

Plastikman is an alias invented by Richie Hawtin, a very minimalist part of his music. The name represents a state of some young and enthusiastic poeple. When he was organizing small parties together with his friends, Richie risked once to be caught by the police. And that's how they got to some friend's house, very scared, and tired of so much running. They were exhausted, they almost looked like plastic. That, and the fact that the people dancing on his music had some very strange moves; they looked very much like plastic men. This is how Richie became a plastic man, a Plastikman. And this name became a legend of techno music. People had the logo of Plastikman tattooed on their hands, on cars, printed on T-shirts, in clubs. Richie chose the logo from many others. Plastikman was a bold young man, wearing glasses, an image that would change after a while. And then people almost didn't recognize him anymore. The most important period of Plastikman was Novamute, a sub label of the famous record label, Mute Records, which believed in his music and released ,,Sheet One", a legendary material for the techno music. Under this alias, Richie also produced "Disconnect", "Closer", "Consumed" at NovaMute, and a little bit later at his own record label M_Nus "Nostalgik".

Richie Hawtin

Even if he opened M-Nus, where talents like Magda, Marc Houle, Troy Pierce and others have released materials, Richie Hawtin remained dedicated to NovaMute label. Today the name of Richie Hawtin is known not only for M_Nus, but also for his extremely well built sets. The documentary 'Pioneers of Electronic Music' offers besides a long talk with Richie, interviews with John Acquaviva, Matthew Hawtin, Karl Kowalski, Derrick May, Sven Väth, Jason Huvaere, Mad Mike Banks, Clark Warner, Amir Daiza, Daniel Miller, Scott Gordon, Mike Himes, Magda and Richie's parents.

Although he has origins in England and Canada, Richie is very tight to the techno scene in Detroit, where he is compared to artists like Kenny Larkin, Stacey Pullen, Eddie Fowlkes and Derrick May. His label Plus 8 (where he is associated with John Aquaviva) is one of the most influential and experimental from the dance music scene. His personal recordings under the name of Plastikman and F.U.S.E. are seen as being very similar with the sound of Detroit.

The initiative of Slices is absolutely remarkable, and the result is excellent. The material, directed by Maren Sextro & Holger Wick shows a Richie less weird than the image he created when he released the compilation DE9 Transition, a Richie that most of us haven't seen. A funny person, cute, with a beautiful life-story, Richie Hawtin is a very important artist on international electronic music scene, a person who can be proud that he has written history for the techno music.

Van Buuren was fascinated by music at a very early age. This was largely due to his father, who had an eclectic taste in music. Besides his love for music, Van Buuren slowly gained more interest in technology and computers. At the age of 14, he bought his first sampler, took his father's synthesizer and started to make music.

During his adolescence, he always rode his bicycle to school while listening to music from Jean Michel Jarre and Ben Liebrand's minimixes through his headphones. Having a great deal of respect for Ben Liebrand, Armin sent him a demo that was received enthusiastically. Liebrand taught Van Buuren a great deal about producing and mixing the following year.

Van Buuren's passion for mixing progressed. He started working as a DJ in a local club called Nexus, finished high school in 1995 and went on to university to study law. Meanwhile, he moved his studio equipment from his bedroom to a 'real' studio. The first tracks he produced in his new studio were, among others, hits like "Touch Me" and "Communication". Not liking to be confined to a particular style by labelling his music, the tracks that followed had varied feeling. Van Buuren has been quoted as saying, "Don't be a prisoner of your own style." He has described his musical style as euphoric, uplifting, melodic and energetic.   


Beat Factor: Recently you have released a new album called "10 Years". This means it's been 10 years since you lake music. On what level do you see yourself at this moment, after 10 years?

Armin van Buuren: Tying up loose ends was the main reason to release this album but it was also a little celebration of 10 years work as a producer. It's been a very sensational time with the raise of trance and to see it grow to what it is now. That's what I find the most fascinating.

Beat Factor: How the album was received by the fans? Do you think you have satisfied their expectations?

Armin van Buuren: 10 Years is not a "best of" album, it's more a selection of previously unreleased and exclusive remixes etc. The album is selling really well so I guess you can see that as a recognition. For me it's nice to close a certain period in my life with this album.

Beat Factor: With this new album, a mega tour of promotion is up. You'll also be playing in Bucharest, in February. How do you feel coming for the second time in Romania?

Armin van Buuren: Last year it was one of my favorite gigs and the Romanian crowd is one of the best in the world. I get a lot of email from Romania from fans listening to my show etc. It's great to see Romania is now part of the EU as well.

Beat Factor: What do you know so far about the Romanian traditions and people?

Armin van Buuren: To be honest I don't know very much. I do know a little bit about the history and I think it's now one of my favorite countries in the former east block.

Beat Factor: Do you prepare something special for this show in Bucharest; musically speaking?

Armin van Buuren: I'm testing out a lot of new tracks of my new album right now and I'm not DJ-ing very much at the moment so you bet you can hear a lot of never heard before tracks in my set!

Beat Factor: Do you know any Romanian DJ / producer? Vania (a Romanian DJ and producer) will be making the warm up set, just like in the last year when you played here.

Armin van Buuren: I'm a big fan of Vardran from Romania. He's an amazing producer.



Beat Factor: Your actual style of music is described more as electro-house than trance. Do you still consider yourself a trance DJ, just like everyone knows you for?

Armin van Buuren: Everybody can call it what he or she wants, for me it is still trance. "Everybody can call it what he or she wants, for me it is still trance."
Beat Factor: Do you still run the process of collecting tracks for your ASOT 2007 compilation? What tracks did you find so far?

Armin van Buuren: Yes I already have 9 (!) exclusive tracks.

Beat Factor: On what point do you think dance music will be in five years?

Armin van Buuren: Still rocking and still being what young people talk about

Beat Factor: Do you happen to remember how was it back then, when you started to produce and release music?; it says you started writing tracks when you were 14 years old.

Armin van Buuren: It was very different back then. It sounds quite unbelievable but there was NO internet in these days and we were all playing vinyl. I guess countries were more focused on their local hero's and DJ's. It's funny to see how internet globalizes dance music.

Beat Factor: Nowadays a DJ like you can gather more than 10.000 people on a show. Do you think that DJs are the next rock superstars?

Armin van Buuren: No, DJs can't be superstars like rock stars. Rock stars play their own tracks live and DJ's play music made by other people. Both (Rock stars and DJs) can become very popular though

Beat Factor: What's new on your record label Armada Music? Did you discover lately any new talents?

Armin van Buuren: Yes, we currently have a lot of new artists under contract. I'm very proud to be working with guys like Sean Tyas, Dave 202, Thomas Bronzwaer, Leon Bolier, Blake Jarrell, and Jennifer Rene etc etc.

Beat Factor: Amsterdam is known as a city without restrictions on drugs. You manage the record label there; what's your position upon drugs?

Armin van Buuren: I don't do drugs and I never will.

Beat Factor: Do you have anything to say to your Romanian fans, who (most of them) are desperately waiting the Armin Van Buuren concert?

Armin van Buuren: Thank you very much for your support in the last year and I'm really looking forward to see you soon in Romania. Let's make it our best night yet!

Nick Warren knows how to truly work a club, to take a crowd high, then higher again. That's what comes with vision and, just as importantly, experience. Nick, a music obsessive who grew up on punk, reggae and pop was, like so many DJs turned onto the power of house music in the late 80s.

You can tell when Nick Warren's on the decks. The music emanating from the man is that perfect club mix of driving percussion and soaring musicality, bursting out of the speakers, soaking everyone in melody, drenching them in sound. On the floor, where it really matters, his crowd experience all the peaks and troughs that make his music so unique. Locking on early, you'll hear his deeper take on house which morphs, as the club mood changes, into harder territory, music for sweating and losing yourself to. And at that point when the light are low, when smoke fills the room and people are dancing on instinct, that's when the melodies start to rise over the top, washing the worries and exertions of life away, completing the club experience.

On February 20, 2007 Nick Warren will release 'Paris,' his 7th mix CD in the popular Global Underground mix series. With 'Paris' GU has reached its milestone GU030 release. We recently chatted with Nick Warren about his upcoming mix CD on Global Underground, about future releases with Jodi Wisternoff under the guise of Way Out West and a few other things.   


Beat Factor: The news that you have compiled the 30th compilation from the Global Underground series spread fast. This is your 7th mix CD for GU. How big a deal was for you to mix this compilation?

Nick Warren: It was a privilege to do it, I have always had a great relationship with GU

Beat Factor: How come you have ended up compiling this CD in Paris?

Nick Warren: I have been playing regularly in Paris for a couple of years now; it's a great city with a fantastic club scene, so I wanted to share it with everyone

Beat Factor: One of the resident DJs from the MIX club in Paris said that there's a new generation of clubbers there and because of this new nation of party people, the music has changed. How do you see Paris now?

Nick Warren: It's very very stylish, the clubbers really dress up to go to the club, and get realy involved, lots of screaming and shouting.

Beat Factor: So do you think Paris should be considered one of the next years's clubbing lands?

Nick Warren: Yes indeed, a weekend in Paris with a night out at the mix club is a great way to spend a weekend.

Beat Factor: Let's turn into the past for a little. You started DJ-ing in a band which is legendary today; Massive Attack. What memories does this bring back to you nowadays?

Nick Warren: Great memories, it really put me on the djing map, and was a great way to learn my skills.

Beat Factor: How was it back then?

Nick Warren: Very eclectic, playing all genres of dance music in one set, al different tempo's, it's a shame that has gone.

Beat Factor: And then it came the Way Out West time, together with Jodi Wisternoff. Was it difficult for you guys to impose on the dance music scene back in '94?

Nick Warren: We didn't really think of it in that way, we just wanted to make the music we wanted, we didn't really worry about being stars.

Beat Factor: What is doing Way Out West at the moment? Do you still work together with Jodi?  "I don't really feel like that, I just want to play the best music I can to like minded people. "
Nick Warren: Indeed, we are starting new WOW material this month, look out for the first single in a few months.

Beat Factor: I noticed that most of the time he plays under the Way Out West name, which is probably a smart marketing trick. Doesn't this bother you?

Nick Warren: No, not at all, I think I do ok for myself.

Beat Factor: You'll release a new EP with Jimmy Van M in January on Hope, called ŒOne and Only¹. How did you team up with Jimmy?

Nick Warren: Jimmy and I have been good friends for many years, and always talked about doing something, and we finally sorted it out, he is a great dj and a lovely man.

Beat Factor: Do you have any new releases on the pipeline?

Nick Warren: New Way Out West material at some stage in 2007 and stacks of releases on Hope Recordings from 16 Bit Lolitas, Shiloh, Oliver Moldan, Pole Folder and Tannen. I think 2007 will be amazing; I am really looking forward to an amazing year.

Beat Factor: What's the significance of the term "superstar DJ" from your point of view? I noticed you were called this way many times.

Nick Warren: I don't really feel like that, I just want to play the best music I can to likeminded people.

Beat Factor: Do you dream when you fall asleep? (off course you do, everybody does) If so, what was the last dream you remember?

Nick Warren: I dreamt I woke up and it was all a dream.

Beat Factor: What should be the last question you¹d liked to be asked and what should be the answer to it?

Nick Warren: Did you have fun? Damn right I did; thanks

Setelah sukses dengan film: HANTU JERUK PURUT dan film: ESKUL (yg menuai kontrovensi itu lho... ), Produser Shanker M , siap merilis film baru berjudul: TEROWONGAN CASABLANCA. rencananya film tersebut akan  direlease / gala premiere diseluruh bioskop indonesia pada pertengahan February 2007.
diharapkan film tsb akan sama suksesnya seperti film2 terdahulu bahkan,dijagokan utk piala Citra 2007.

Yang menarik dari film ini adalah dengan digunakannya 2 buah lagu EDM/underground/progressive house yg dibuat oleh musisi /DJ / artist lokal Menurut informasi dari Production House film tsb ke 2 buah lagu itu dibuat oleh DJ Deny & Dicky Dargo , yaitu

2 . SideKick part 1

infonya ke 2 lagu tersebut digunakan utk beberapa scene dengan latar belakang dunia disco ( khususnya jakarta )  yang mana  keduanya adalah singles album EP(Extended play) DJ Deny yg akan dirilis bulan April-May 2007 dengan title "Sidekick EP".

Mudah2an ini bisa memacu kreativitas dunia EDM Indonesia pada umumya utk terus berkarya , agar semakin banyak karya musisi /artist EDM yg mendapat appresiasi di jalurnya masing- masing. 

Apakah ini pertanda Progressive House / Trance akan kembali berkibar di dancescene EDM...? semoga....

party reportnya donk.......hehehehe gw juga dateng seh , dan gw ngikutin Jimmy Van M mulai main start dari jam 00.30 sampai jam 03.30...dan menurut gw spinningnya biasa aja ,cuma emang udah jadi trademark kali ya kalo Foreign DJ  skill ngemixnya bener- bener rapi bersih dan seemless mixing , hehe doi main pake CD dan menurut gw set & flownya biasa aja ,kurang menggigit ( hehehe kucing kaleeee mengigit... ), ga ada yg special dech malem itu... cuma 2 lagu terakhir sebelum dia turun lagunya bener - bener "ajaib"......

hehe...mungkin ada yg hadir dan punya opini lain ...? .... Danza Danzi mungkin....??
