This is Istanbul-based Onur Özer's first mix CD. Situated by the river Spree, known for its first-rate lineups of international talent and its famous wall-to-wall LED dancefloor installation, the Watergate Club in Berlin has quickly become one of the world's leading dance music clubs. Only 5 years after its official opening, the club now goes a step further and releases a mix CD series delivering only the finest DJ mixes by some of the club's most exiting residents and guests. With the focus being put not only on the music, but also on the packaging and design, this series will quickly become a truly sought-after collector's item, standing out in flood of mediocre music and mixes that often dilute the market.

The music you'll experience when Onur Özer is behind the decks is no music to stand still to -- this is music with a fresh energy that will keep lifting your arms and your mood even higher, as the night wears on. Onur began his musical career in the late '90s, when minimal house and tech-house were making a resurgence in Istanbul. In a city oppressed by both a stifling heat and a musical style equally as stagnant, Onur helped battle to change the old rules and break old habits, breathing fresh life into a dispirited club scene. Word quickly caught on, and the clubs soon filled up for Onur's increasingly renowned sets. Here's  the latest Fabric mix, number 41 in the series, from the Chilean maestro-of-moustaches, Luciano. Probably the most famous moustaches in the todays minimal dance scene

01. Rhadoo - 'Slagare' [Cadenza]
02. Brothers' Vibe - 'El Baile (Acapella)' [Cadenza]
Luciano wastes no time getting the Cadenza vibes going. Rhadoo's Dor Mit Oru EP has been slept on quite badly I reckon, so it's great to hear 'Slagare' getting the lead-off here. The 'El Baile' a cappella made an appearance on Luciano's much-discussed Raum Open-Air set from September last year - god knows what he's talking about, but it establishes the latin vibe I'm expecting to endure through the rest of the mix. And ah man 'Slagare' just takes me back to Ricardo last weekend!

03. D'Julz - 'Yo Momo' [Intacto]
The first D'Julz track is the newie on Intacto. The Shinedoe remix is a good cut, but here the original emerges seamlessly from Rhadoo's bounce and pop and gives stuff a bit more weight. I'm already enjoying this immensely - and now i'm really looking forward to 'Just So You Know' later on...

Los Updates - 'Getting Late [Luciano's Getting Late Remix]' [Cadenza]
Los Updates have a lot of buzz right now! Anyone associated with Ricardo's Fabric 36 is fine by me. I guess some people may not like the vocals (I've seen some people complain about '4 Wheel Drive' being vocal-heavy) but I actually like them - here they're hilariously mundane: "For the momentbeing the restrooms are busy, they are cleaning or maybe changing some kind of useful device...what do I care?" This is good party music.
...
Ah man there's some great percussion clattering around here! I'm very glad the 'Andruic & Japan' vibe has found a place here. Hah and these high-pitched synths sound like Tellytubby land! Yeah I need to hear this in Fabric room 1.

05. Reboot - 'Be Tougher' [Cadenza]
Reboot's 'Be Tougher' keeps things moving nicely - I've never been totally won over by this one because it sounds a bit muddy to these ears, but here it lends a nice bit of momentum. Not sure i'd listen to the whole EP again though.

06. Alex Picone - 'Floppy' [Cadenza]
Here's ANOTHER new Cadenza track, this one the upcoming #027 from Alex Picone. I would complain if it wasn't so good. Allegations of chinstroking immediately thrown out of the window here - 'Floppy' is GROOVY. Oh yes yes yes, I think i'll be buying that one...

07. Sety - 'Mogane [Guillaume & The Coutu Dumonts Remix]' [Circus Company]
This is also my first listen to 'Mogane' by Sety, this time the Guillaume & The Coutu Dumonts remix. Nice and gentle percussion going on in the background, and I like the handclaps...ooh and some vocals. This really is just like Luciano's set in Fabric last month - the kind of sexy swing I enjoyed at the time, but now for repeat play on a CD. Nice. I know a lot of people have criticised Luciano for not changing it up enough, but for me when the basic sound is this good...why fuck with it?

08. Johnny D - 'Orbitalife' [Oslo]
Ah and here's the big one. When 'Orbitalife' topped RA's charts a while back I couldn't work out why. I'd given it a few listens, I'd enjoyed it in Johnny D's Get The Curse podcast from last year, but still...that one note just annoyed me after a while. Then I heard it some more, then I listened to it some more, then I realised I was CHOOSING to listen to it more, then I finally worked out that I was under its spell. Then Luciano/Pedro played it out in full - TWICE - in Fabric room 1 (I'm going to be like a broken record about Fabric room 1...sorry) and then, yes, I was totally sold. I suppose some of you might be sick of it by now, but I'm not.

09. Julien Jabre - 'Jungle Beatz' [Defected]
10. M83 - 'In Church' [Gooom]
Some 'Jungle Beatz' from Julien Jabre make for a nice exit from D's antsy murmurings. This mix is mesmerising so far. I guess 'Orbitalife' could have been played for a little less time, but then that'd remove some of its hypnotic (*spits on word*) effect. OOOOOH and here's the M83. Luciano mixed 'In Church' with D'Julz's 'Just So You Know' in Fabric last month, so it's interesting to hear that he's trying it in different contexts. M83's new album has been sending me all misty-eyed and starstruck recently ('Kim And Jessie' especially) but it's nice to be reminded of the hazy days of their earlier material. With Fabric's smoke and lasers, this track really did send me dreaming! (Anyone think it should be a bit higher in the mix though? Maybe I should just turn the volume up...I think of M83 like My Bloody Valentine: more volume=more pleasure).

11. Kevin Saunderson/Inner City - 'Good Love [Luciano's Good Love Remix]' [KMS]
Immensely preferable to the A-side remix by Jesse Rose, here's Luciano's remix of 'Good Love' by Kevin Saunderson/Inner City. Where Jesse Rose goes all novelty on 'World Of Deep' and ends up slightly debasing it, Luciano just takes 'Good Love' and twists it into his own meandering worldview- there's nothing goofy about it, it's just very classy. For me this track sounds like a cut off Fourges Et Sabres but with some occasional vocals/moans and more cavernous percussion. I'm expecting this to amp things up a bit - it's an exercise in tension-building if ever there was one. Looking down the tracklist I can see Phuture and D'Julz on the way, so it looks like I'm in luck...

12. Phuture - 'Rise From Your Grave [Tiefschwarz Remix]' [Strictly Rhythm]
I haven't heard any Phuture apart from 'Acid Tracks', but here's a Tiefschwarz remix of their 'Rise From Your Grave' on Strictly Rhythm. I'm a bit ambivalent towards Tiefschwarz really...their remixes are much of a muchness to me, and I've never heard them DJ or anything...this is quite funky I guess. Shame it's not something a bit MORE though after the Inner City workout - I was expecting a bit more of a peak after 6 minutes of tension. In fact this sounds almost apologetic!

13. Schneider, Galluzzi - 'Albertino' [Cadenza]
14. D'Julz - 'Just So You Know' [Ovum]
'Albertino' is a stonecold classic for me (although it's outshone even by the B-side, 'Nora P') so I'm not averse to it appearing here. Again, i'm sure seasoned Luciano-spotters will be irked by its perceived 'oldness', but the fact is it's a great track and I'd like to think that tracks this good could have a longer shelflife than your average techno record. And I guess 'Just So You Know' could almost be described as the new 'Albertino', although it's about 10x as big and about 10x as lethal. This track destroys me every time. Stonecold dead. Annihilated. Ouch. I feel like the mix could have done without the Phuture track - going straight from the Inner City quagmire into the 'Albertino'/'Just So You Know' combo would probably be a massive payoff, although I guess if the tunes don't match then the tunes don't match.
...
Seriously, what was D'Julz on when he made this monstrosity?!

15. Kenny Larkin - 'You Are...' [Planet E]
'You Are...' has a tough act to follow, and I guess this is the start of the slow wind-down to the finale. At this point I'm pleased with the mix for the most part, although I would have loved to have heard Luciano letting himself go a bit more - maybe some of the darker style he played after 7am last month, like Loco Dice's punishing 'Pimp Jackson Is Talking Now' etc. I really like how the mixture of house from Chile and Detroit has worked. Here, Kenny Larkin makes a lot of sense, vocally confirming the conclusions we should have come to from the music that preceded him over the last hour: "The outcome is whatever you choose."

16. Chymera - 'Arabesque' [Tishomingo]
I'm mighty glad to hear another Chymera track - this one from early last year. If you haven't had your mind LITERALLY BLOWN by his 'Ellipsis' release then go and get yourself sorted out. I like 'Arabesque' a lot too - a suitably whimsical finish to the mix. I can imagine this one at 9am in room 1 (there I go again...) with the lasers painting the walls and smiles all round.

Verdict
I've listened to this once. And i've written an awful lot of crap here. But, unlike many Fabric CDs, I know I'll be listening to this again quite a few times. The more familiar I get with Luciano's DJing, the more I appreciate his particular slant on the often-slapdash latin/detroit mashup. (By the way i'm writing this bit as 'Arabesque' plays out and it's getting really beautiful). The Los Updates track is massive, as is the Alex Picone one - I don't think you could accuse Cadenza of descending into chinstroking with these releases. I hope to hear both of those many times over the summer.

I expect the main criticisms of this mix will be its lack of diversion from his sets, its Cadenza-heavy lineup, its slightly meandering trajectory after the Johnny D (which does seem a bit monolithic in the middle there)...but these are all things that I think could be forgiven in the Cadenza boss. This is how he rolls, so roll with him.

Panorama Bar 01: Mixed by Cassy [Ostgut Ton]   

"This mix is the first release from dance music's current Xanadu, Berlin's Panoramabar, so you already know which way it's going to jump – ideological purity all the way. And that purity of vision, expressed here by resident Cassy, has produced a hugely evocative document of just why so many of us want to go hear a DJ play one record after another for hours on end. Many people will hate this CD for the exact reasons I love it. I love the fact that Cassy brings in each track loud and early, the way you would in a club. Portrayed in elegant black and white, her upper body stretched supine across the album cover, her enormous head of curly hair hiding her face and most of her naked back, Cassy looks like your dime-a-dozen R´n´B star on the cover of her new album. What she is, in fact, is an ingenious DJ/musician showcased by one of the hottest clubs in Europe. So hot that this review is probably already passé.

They don't allow photographers into Berlin´s Panorama Bar, but Cassy's mix for the concern´s label captures the sound and the spirit of the club. A kind of German sister-in-law to London´s Fabric (fittingly, as I would compare this brilliant microhouse mix with "Fabric 17" by Akufen), Panorama can be found inside an abandoned power plant. Cassy´s instinctual beat-building and unfailing good taste leaves no tush resting on its bar stool - everybody is up and dancing when Cassy´s at the controls.

The twenty-four tracks which make up her mix picks the choicest plums from a decade´s harvest. Two of her remixes as well as new material from her upcoming EP are also featured - and certainly not for reasons of vanity.

Microhouse, glitch techno or whatever you want to call it is a music of infinitesimal variation, since the manipulated output of digital impulses is what makes up the beat, the genre is "micro" in more than one sense. Not being an aficianado but rather a casual fan, almost all these artists are new to me. However, some stand out with great distinction by creating such imaginative variants within such a small arena, and Cassy herself does an absolutely perfect job of selecting and stringing these technoid pearls together seamlessly.

While it is the sum of the parts that makes the whole so successful, individual highlights include Shakleton´s flea-circus funk, "Blood on My Hands"; the chugging and percolating "Channel B" by Mono Junk; the fast-forward oompah of DBX´s nicely-named "City on the Edge of Forever"; Cassy´s own humourous remix of Yassin & Arne´s "Bleepy Creep"; and the pseudo-calypso of Mathias Kaden, "Pentaton". That being said, throughout the CD, the various artists amaze with their ability to construct marvelous, heretofore unheard crunchy beats.

As stated above, fully in league with what the present reviewer has often hailed as one of the strongest club mixes in this genre, Akufen´s "Fabric 17" (see review elsewhere in Sonomu).

my favorite mix album in 2007 so far..


"It is all my productions and it's a form of introducing an album as a mix. Every time you do an album and then you do the next one, people start to compare how the music is different, why you did it on this label and not that label, they try to define it, "the other album was better," "there's no hit like "Easy Lee" on it... and so forth it's exhausting, really. So I think you always have to find a new way to introduce your music and present yourself. I chose fabric because fabric is the perfect label for me to do this on. I really prefer for it to be treated like a normal mix CD, with no hype. I'm more known for head-y, trippy music, so of course it is still very trippy and monotone, in the monotone way of delivering always the same tone and doing something to your brain. But it is more dancey and housey and summery. I always think of the dancefloor when I create music, so it's a projection, a vision. And it?s not one track after another after another, it develops very subtly." - Ricardo Villalobos

"At the age of three I moved to Germany. There was a military coup [General Augusto Pinochet overthrew the democratic government of Salvador Allende in 1973] and we had to go, it was a forced situation. My mother is German so that was an easy decision. I found Germany to be very nice. For sure it was complicated, and I had problems with the culture and the language at first, but after a while I found out how to behave in Germany, how to fix those problems, and then it was really cool. My whole family is extremely musical. My Uncle, my Grandma, my step-Mother... it is called a family parra; a traditional, musical family. Also around me was a collection of scientists, mathematicians; my Father and Grandpa. It was a complete division between mathematics and music. Now, I hear some people saying that music is like 'the mathematics of feelings'. I believe there is something like a brotherhood between music and mathematics."

MUSICAL ROOTS

"When I was ten or eleven I started to play conga and bongos. Music was something I loved but I never thought that I could be a musician. I started in the late eighties making electronic music, and DJing too. When I was twelve I became the biggest Depeche Mode fan. I was everywhere that they were in Europe, travelling with them. My interest in electronic music came from Depeche Mode, for sure. For me they were like the Beatles of the eighties, with electronic instruments. It was one of the bands responsible for making electronic music popular. In '81 and '82 they had lots of four-to-the-floor stuff, ten or eleven minute mixes of tracks, and they were the first to do it. Daniel Miller was doing techno in the early eighties too, and he, of course, signed Depeche Mode to his Mute label. You can mix those records with techno tracks. In the beginning people complained about Depeche Mode. They said, 'They don't play the music how it sounds on record.' But after a while people understood it, and Depeche Mode need to be credited with helping this music find popularity. For me personally, I'd also credit Baby Ford, Thomas Melchior, Daniel Bell, Andrew Weatherall for sure, and Richie - the whole Plastikman and Fuse stuff at the beginning, especially; the Plastikman records were just crazy in the early nineties - as being my biggest influences, alongside some house artists, in particular Derrick Carter. Brazilian music is the biggest influence I have. Brazilians were listening to techno two or three hundred years before anyone else. If you compare the samba groove to the techno groove it has a really, really similar idea behind it. I think South American music is important because of the rhythm, but also the melody. It relates to the living, the reality that people have in South America. You have many things to be sad about, but the general outlook is one of happiness. It's a very special mixture and mentality. The people are making these melodies that exist exactly between sadness and happiness, and also the rhythm thing creates happiness. People use music to forget their problems. I was listening to this music with my parents at home the whole time, and the influence is very, very pronounced. Brazilian music; Salsa; Cuban music; the music of the Andes - Chile, Peru, Bolivia - all these things; Tango for sure; Argentinean Astor Piazzolla; all of it. These melodies are full of passion, happy and sad at the same time, it leaves something very strong in your mind."

FIRST PROJECTS

"In the beginning it's like a hobby. DJing paid something between one hundred and five hundred Euros. You couldn't live out of it. I was studying at University and doing parties and stuff, but more or less doing this as something I just enjoyed. Then we started a little label in '93 called Placid Flavour... it didn't go very well, so, we started again. I met the Playhouse people in '93 and made my first record for them in '94. In '95 and '96 I started to be more serious, also with DJing. Since '98 this has definitely been a career. I've only done this to earn money. I need to live, and I need to work hard. It's quite late: some people get known at 22 and 23 for being DJs. This didn't happen to our generation; our generation took a lot longer and it wasn't that easy to get musical information and good records. Now you have high standards of production and a lot of people to learn from. You get your information in big packages, you get told a lot at once. Friends tell you now, whereas [people from] our generation were on their own. Maybe a few people had listened to Dance Mania or Trax records and things like that but now everybody says 'Detroit is one of my biggest influences, even if you're 23 years old. You can get the information to work it all out. It took me ten years from getting my first money, to realise that I'd be able to live from doing this, that it's the centre of my life, the reason I stay living. If things grow slowly, and you stay where you have always been much longer, you don't fall as fast. Everyone is talking like this now, all the good artists, it's like a rule. It's the much better way."

LABELS AND PRODUCTION

"I have a few main labels: Perlon, Playhouse, and a couple owned by friends like Luciano. Perlon and Playhouse are enough: I have so much to do, I have to DJ and produce like hell. It is impossible for me to start a label for example. It's also not necessary. The world of labels will shrink a little bit. The reality is that labels are disappearing, distribution is disappearing, vinyl is getting harder and harder to live with. It's important to give all my energy to Perlon and Playhouse and not somewhere else, I won't go and make an album for another label."

DJING

"I have always DJed the same way. I don't jump around, and make a big show, and scream or whatever. Things like that are not my style. You have to be very concentrated, but also you have to be in the mood of the people, that is very important. Being relaxed is good, and it means you can play a little more abstract stuff in-between the stuff that people are more likely to be expecting. Everyone has a style and mine has always been like this."

FABRIC

"For me it's incredible to be able to play at Fabric so often. It's the best sounding club in the world. The atmosphere is really nice, the concept is really nice, that there are three floors, each a completely different world. You enter each room and it is like it is swallowing you, it's something that doesn't happen in big rooms very often. If I am asked to play in a club where two thousand people attend in one night I normally say 'No, no way, too much'. The first time I came to Fabric I was completely surprised at how separate and how isolated each of the worlds are. You can decide on where to go depending on how you feel, and the line ups are good and different. It's a music lover's concept, and the people that do fabric are music lovers. And it has a lot of support from the underground: that isn't very common for a big club at all."

THE FUTURE

"It's important to make the club thing happen in Berlin, to develop our scene, and there are so many incredible musicians here in Berlin that it will start to happen. We will all begin to work together, in different and strange mixtures. People that don't know one another will begin to work together. We are all going to the same parties, listening to the same music, dancing to the same music; all these people will work together and it will be really fertile and interesting. Richie is here; Thomas Melchior; Baby Ford is here every three weeks; Luciano is coming. It's a worldwide net of close friends that are heading for the same thing. Berlin is where everyone meets. It's a big city, not a small one, it's the only big city that we Germans have. It's really, really nice and it's cheap to get a flat. I want to be here more and not travel so much, I really want to be here."
