Progressive / Austin Leeds - Dirty Sound Vol 2: Love Machine15/02/08, 10:51
Austin Leeds - Dirty Sound Vol 2: Love Machine
If you've been keeping an eye on the tracks and remixes that have been topping the charts and radio plays for the last few years, you will surely have seen Austin Leeds' name before. He has had numerous songs in the Beatport Top 10, including 3 # 1 top downloads. Paul Van Dyk named Austin Leeds and his production partner Nick Terranova as his producers of the year for 2007 recently, an din March last year Austin joined AM Only, the worlds premier booking Agency. So you could say that this highly talented DJ/Producer is going places. With a world tour being lined up after the album launch at Miami WMC, you'll be hearing a lot more from Austin Leeds throughout 2008. Austin Leeds has been touring around the world for nearly 10 years and this is his first mix compilation. He turned down other offers because he wasn't given the freedom to be able to express himself properly, and "Dirty Sounds Volume 2 - Love Machine" features unreleased solo tracks from Austin, as well as numerous remixes and productions by Austin and Nick together. Austin Leeds is the kind of guy that is likely to drag you into his studio to get your opinion on his next track, always striving to improve and innovate. And with the release of "Dirty Sound Volume 2 – Love Machine" he has done just that, inviting the whole world into that studio to share in this amazing and incomparable recording. It's an invitation that will be readily accepted and revered, as Austin Leeds is quickly establishing himself as a unique and innovative studio tactician. Originally from Miami, Austin recently settled in Las Vegas, that other sun-drenched capital of sonic hedonism, and hooked up with good friend and production partner Nick Terranova (Starkillers). The results have been astounding, as the Terranova & Austin Leeds team have produced multiple hits together such as "Shake Me", "Rock Me", "For The Pills", and "Only You", as well as remixes for Paul van Dyk, Erick Morillo and many others. Of course we can't forget the No.1 track "Discoteka" by Starkillers, a massive hit around the world. The result of Austin's Herculean work ethic has resulted in an overwhelming demand for original material from the man himself, and Austin proves he's up for the challenge with the release of "Dirty Sound Volume 2 – Love Machine". Featuring selections mainly produced by Austin himself including a new single "I Can't Get Away", this mix compilation further establishes Austin Leeds as an original creator and dance floor trendsetter whose works sit in the crates of most superstar DJs the world over while rocking club floors around the globe. Austin Leeds' "Dirty Sound Vol 2: Love Machine" mix compilation is out in March on Made Records; Vol 1 in the DIRTY SOUND series by Starkillers is out now. House / interview with "TRAXSOURCE" OWNER Brian Tappert and Marc Pomeroy24/11/07, 13:27
Deli talks to the founders & owners of Traxsource.com, Marc Pomeroy and Brian Tappert, about the development of Level 3g, the digital download phenomenon and what's in store in the coming months.
What does Level 3g mean? MP: Level 3g means it's our 3rd generation, plus it coincides with our 3rd year in existence. We took it from the early days to something totally new. The new functionality speaks for itself. Everybody does Version, 2, Version 3, Version Whatever, but Traxsource is not everybody. Why did you decide to introduce Genres three years into launching Traxsource? BT: Over the years, not having Genres was the biggest criticism we received. Marc and I both being old school in mentality have always been against it, so we held off until recently. It's mainly because our customer base and content has really grown and now Genres make sense. There's a lot of stuff on the site. Now, with 3g it's much easier to find the music you love. What advances and improvement does Level 3g bring to its users? MP: The biggest advance is the Genre Functionality, which took most of the development time. Now, users can not only browse but also filter by Genre in key areas of the site. Another big thing is the Improved Navigation. It's now much easier to get around and it makes a lot more sense. We re-vamped the search engine not only to put the most relevant results but also the newest stuff on top. This was something a lot of customers requested. We listened to them and are now bringing them what they need. There's also the updated News Section to tell people what's going on. Our updated Label Page now displays a lot of labels at once, which makes it so much easier to find a label. Not only that, but also the Favorite (Labels) Section allows customers to add labels to their favorites. In that way, users can make Traxsource only show content from their Favorite Labels. We even made a lot of performance tweaks to make the site quicker and more efficient BT: The top right hand section of the site is now the nerve center. Everywhere you want to go on Traxsource is right there. We also re-organized and expanded our DJ Tools...for example if you're looking for Accapellas you'll find hundreds of results...It's the same with Producer Packs. Tell us about the development process for Level 3g BT: It's a very long and drawn out process of trial and error, to say the least. We spend a lot of time listening to customers, discussing ideas, and putting things on the drawing board...it's kinda boring. Basically Marc and one other guy is our entire development team. The rest of our team all has input in the various functionalities, but when it comes to the actual coding, I give all the credit to Marc. MP: It's a lot of blood sweat n tears. We don't have a huge team. But the good thing is that we have developers that love our style of music, they're not just everyday programmers. This is exactly what we wanted. Part of that love is actually going into the code. It just takes us a bit longer. In fact, we love hearing things about the site, good and bad...that's how we make our improvements. Traxsource now offers all those Genres from House to Jackin, Classic House and so on. There's also a Genre called Deep/Tech, a term that Traxsource coined. Tell us more BT: If you've been following House for the last year or so, something is obvious. A lot of Deep guys are making their version of Tech House, and a lot of Minimal/Techno guys are making Deep House. There is a whole new underground brewing for this sound and it made sense for us to embrace it and create a button for it. If you go to our Deep/Tech section you will see what we're talking about sound-wise. Does this mean there will now be less focus on Soulful House? BT: Absolutely not. Our site oozes Soulful House. But at the same time we carry a lot of other styles of music. We always have, it's not a new thing. We all think it s important to be diverse...In the end it's about making it easy to find what you want. And if you find something you like, the site now shows you a whole load of other stuff you may also like. What do you see for the future of digital music? MP: We see a lot of technology opening up, there are new things every week it seems. We like it, it's amazing to see the evolution. We want to start following some of these things and even be the leader with some of them. There's for example Mobile Technology. We're thinking about doing an entire mobile site so you can get tracks on your phone. BT: There's also education of the younger generation...that's the biggest thing we all face right now. The young guys need to learn that music is not free. They need to be taught by the older generation that it's the right thing to BUY music. It's an educational process. The Traxsource Top 10 seems to be one of the most important charts in House Music nowadays. How does it work? MP: We pull from the download records every day, in fact many times throughout the day. It is exact, true and actual data. A lot of people think we move the chart around and do our thing to it - We don't! The chart is important to us, we see what people are doing, what they re downloading. Traxsource has a new motto 'We Are House'. What does it mean? BT: This new motto expresses the vibe that we all have. Traxsource was a labor of love from the beginning and it continues to be. We live and breathe the scene, that's how we got where we are. 3, 4 years ago when we launched, Traxsource was the future of House, but now it is here...so We Are House! After Level 3g, what is the next move? MP: There's a big list....one of the things we did in the last few months was a massive infrastructure upgrade so we can serve our customers more efficiently. The next big thing would be the implementation of WAV files. We're getting a lot of requests, so we'll do it. We're also developing a new player, which can be used externally as well as internally. There will be new features on the site for the player, like users being able to play an entire page or an entire release. This could be an affiliate system for sales, etc. The list goes on... Tell us about the team behind Traxsource BT: I have to say, pound for pound, we have the best team in the world. We have 14 full time people including Marc and myself, plus a series of interns and people from around the world that log on and help in various ways. It takes a lot of effort day after day to move Traxsource forward. It's turned into a bit of a monster... MP: It's quite a madhouse over here ![]() Any shout-outs? BT: Big thanks to all of our team, they work very hard day in and day out and we have a lot of respect for them. Of course our labels, customers, DJs, promoters and the radio stations supporting the show. Marc and I also want to thank you Deli, for our Radio Show. We really enjoy listening to it every week! #12

Progressive / INTERVIEW WITH JIMMY VAN M08/03/07, 07:54
1.
Progressive-Sounds: Balance 010 marks your first mix compilation in several years. When you were first approached by EQ regarding the project, was your initial idea for the compilation the same as what the album came to be, or was the triple disc concept that you came up with something that came over time? Jimmy Van M: The first idea was just an eclectic mix and a club mix, but I had too much I wanted to cover. I wanted to play a broad spectrum of music and tried to touch on a lot of varied styles I've been into for a long time. The flow of the whole mix was very important to me, so creating three discs seemed to suit all the music I wanted to use. The downtempo mix starts at 65 bpm and gets up to 100 bpm, the midtempo one starts from 100 bpm and goes up to about 124, and finally the uptempo mix barely reaches 126. It's a mix I hope people will listen to at any time for hopefully many years. I went over at least a thousand tracks and decades of music I've been inspired by. 2. Progressive-Sounds: How did the album come together, and how did you go about choosing the tracks that you came to include? Some of the classics on there span quite a time period, so how much of your record collection did you have to go through whilst compiling the album to find the tracks you wanted? Jimmy Van M: I went over at least a thousand tracks and decades of music I've been inspired by. Sean Cusick helped a lot as he's a musical library who has a massive log of music stored so its like record shopping through all the music you remember. I chose songs that meant something to me but also flowed well with each other. I was trying to create pieces of music that made sense sitting with each other. It was really exciting to put Depeche Mode in there because I listened to them in my youth, but then there is new stuff I am absolutely amazed by. Oliver Lieb's 'Integrale' is just such an immense tune and I think it's important for where it fits. There's so much out there and you really have to be different but also at the same time create something listenable. One approach I tried was to make something anyone could listen to. 3. Progressive-Sounds: With so many DJ mixes available for free these days, do you feel it's harder for DJs to come up with something special when putting together a mix compilation, or do you feel that if a DJ is forward thinking enough that it's something that comes naturally rather than being strived for? Jimmy Van M: Of course. There's so much out there and you really have to be different but also at the same time create something listenable. One approach I tried was to make something anyone could listen to. I've had feedback from parents, friends and music people alike who've said they enjoyed the mix and that's really what I wanted. 4. Progressive-Sounds: You've been back in the studio in the last few months, working with the 16 Bit Lolitas and Nick Warren amongst others. Does it feel good to be back in the studio working on your own music and collaborating with such talented people? Can you tell us about some of the music you've been working on and what we can look forward to hearing over the coming months? Jimmy Van M: I've been working with a fantastic musician called Steve T. We wrote 'How Are You', which is the 3rd song on the midtempo disc of the Balance compilation. He's been traveling around with me and has been a great inspiration in production. He used to be in a band called Deep C so he's quite varied in his likes and the things he's capable of doing. 'The Only & Only' with Nick was a lot of fun. I've also recently launched a website, as I've never had one before so that's quite exciting. Jimmy Van M 5. Progressive-Sounds: How is life living in Barcelona compared to the US, and how is being part of the new Litheum dj agency working out for you? Jimmy Van M: I love it, it feels like home, and being part of the agency is great. It's a small agency with people like Carl Cox, John Digweed and Michel de Hey. Ian Hindmarsh knows what he's doing and he's easy to work with. The roster is quite small so it's nice he can focus his energy on the artists as I think that's important. 6. Progressive-Sounds: The TCA agency continues to grow, with the artist roster more diverse than ever. Do you feel that the roster reflects the broadening of the dance scene in general, and what areas do you see the agency and its DJs and artists reaching out to in the future? Jimmy Van M: I think diversity is very important and I feel like we have a great group of talented people in many different markets. We're always trying to find different opportunities for them and find crossover potential. My business partner Joel Zimmerman who runs the agency has an amazing ability for knowing what's good. He has a very discerning ear and does a great job for TCA and the artists. Jimmy Van M 7. Progressive-Sounds: With a five month tour to promote the album due to start shortly, plus a show on New Years Eve with Sasha and John Digweed, what are you looking forward to over the next few months? Jimmy Van M: I'm looking forward to two things. Honolulu is a great place where I'll start the evening playing alternative music, starting with everything from the late 70's and beyond for the first two hours. An interesting mix of songs and sounds, and the best part of playing there is the people welcome this. They love the eclectic sounds and the vibe that comes from it is really amazing. The second thing is touring out in Australia. I've not been there for 4 or 5 years so I'm eager to get back and play. I'll be spending three weeks there and I'm really looking forward to it. I love being able to build that intensity, being able to bring things further along and setting a mood. 8. Progressive-Sounds: Since you are known more so for your warm up sets than your peak time sets do you find you enjoy one or the other more? Are they different for you, and do you feel you can experiment more as a warm up dj? Jimmy Van M: I enjoy them both a lot actually. I recently played at The Cross in London for Renaissance and played from 22:30-01:30. It wasn't too packed when I first started but by 12 it was full and people were just starting to get excited. I love being able to build that intensity, being able to bring things further along and setting a mood. I'm much more used to playing peak time now since I've been touring for the Balance compilation and try to do things in an unobvious way. # Jimmy Van M - ECI-PS # Jimmy Van M - Balance 010 Recent Reviews * Momu - Mavericks * Elegant Universe - Superchainer / Insight * Kosmas Epsilon - Lovesong * Cerf, Mitiska & Jaren - Light The Skies * Shlomi Aber - Walking In My Sleep / Portico * Omid 16B - Changing Change EP * Elegant Universe Vs Plastic Pimps - Music EP * Muz & Mann - Backseat Bandit / Panik * Dousk - Mocca EP * D-Nox & Beckers - Naked Punch Sound Bits on Global Underground 2006 saw the Global Underground label place it's focus on it's GU Music label, bringing us albums from Dark Globe, Sissy, The Remote, and Lostep.
