The Progressive-Sounds Guide to WMC 2008

The Winter Music Conference 2008 has officially begun as of Tuesday March 25 and with that begins one of the most exciting weeks of the year for electronic music fans and industry alike. WMC is one of the focal points of the yearly dance music calendar, bringing together DJs, producers, labels, promoters, and everyone else in between for one week of intense partying and possibly a little business and networking too.

This year Progressive-Sounds is sending one of its own to the front-lines in Miami to cover the cutting edge of dance music at its finest. This is a week when every DJ strives to be in top form as all the influential ears of the industry are listening, which means trying to stand out from the rest is a true challenge, even for seasoned veterans.

This article is a preview of the coverage Progressive-Sounds will provide in the week ahead, looking at the DJs and venues that will provide what we hope to be a very memorable week. Our goal is to provide you the most comprehensive coverage of all things house happening at this year's conference including event reviews, interviews and general blogging of the week.

We are please to have the opportunity to get to interview two very influential sets of DJs during WMC this year. The first being the SOS collective of Desyn Masiello, Omid 16B, and Demi who will be commemorating the release of their upcoming compilation Balance 013 with a launch party @ Pawn Shop on Thursday night. We've been lucky enough to get a chance to hear it and have been really impressed with the track selection those three were able to put together across three discs. If you are a fan of past Balance mixes on the house side of things from the likes of Luke Fair, Paolo Mojo and Desyn himself, you will definitely find a lot to like with this superb compilation.

The second set is that of James Zabiela & Nic Fanciulli, who have established a strong DJing partnership over the past year through their One + One alias and will be promoting a number of upcoming solo projects. We'll get a chance to ask them some questions about their plans for the rest of 2008, the big event they will be playing at Studio A on Friday night, and hopefully get some insight into what they have coming down the pipeline.

Below is a list of the events we plan on attending during the conference and a short summary of what to really looking forward to about each one. Include is as much detail on each one as possible in order to provide you with a one stop shop for everything you need to know about the best events happening at this year's Winter Music Conference in Miami.

the best events happening at this year's Winter Music Conference in Miami.
Wednesday, March 26: Canada Loves Miami vs. xes On Wax Pool Party

As the name implies, a number of Canada's best imports will be gathering to help kick off the week right, including the likes of Max Graham and Luke Fair. Aiding them in this endeavor will be the xes On Wax label crew consisting of Desyn Masiello and Omid 16B. I can't think of a place I'd rather be as soon as I get off the plane!

Location: Shelborne Resort, Poolside
Time: Noon to 10:30 PM
Talent: Luke Fair, Max Graham, Sultan, Jody Wisternoff, Desyn Masiello, Omid 16B, Jimmy Van M, 16 Bit Lolitas, Tone Depth & Jonas, and many more...

Wednesday, March 26: Dig Deeper With Danny Howells

This edition of Danny's Dig Deeper event series will see him playing an extended set in the heart of Miami Beach late into the night. This really gives him a great platform to play a diverse range of music, and is quite different to what you will see at most WMC events, with 10+ DJs on the bill playing 2 hour sets. It should be great to hear a veteran like Danny take his audience through an entire night from start to finish.

Location: SET Nightclub
Time: 10 PM to 5 AM
Talent: Danny Howells (Extended Set. All Danny, All Night)
Cost: $25 Tix
Website: theopiumgroup.com

Thursday, March 27 Discoteca Music Label Party

Discoteca Music is a label I was recently turned onto after a bit of digging around on MySpace (sad but true). Its a relatively new house label that was founded by a group of 4 like-minded DJs from around the globe, who are now joined by house veteran Luke Fair. Although Luke might be the only big name on the bill, each of these DJs is equally capable of putting together a great set, and I'm looking forward to learning more about each of them.

Location: Jafar on Fifth
Time: Noon to Midnight
Talent: Luke Fair, balErik, Tom Morgan, Dana Bergquist, Emjae, Fine Taste, Gabriel Sordo, and more...
Cost: Free
Note: The latest tune from Discoteca is 'Futourist' by Jay Lamar, and the Dana

Thursday, March 27: Get Frisky! Miami

One of dance music's premier online radio stations Frisky Radio is putting together an event during WMC this year to celebrate the launch of their Frisky Music label and their inaugural release with a compilation mixed by Pole Folder titled "Desinations." They've got a stellar line-up put together comprising of great house and progressive DJs spinning pool-side which is sure to be a real treat. You just need to ask yourself, are you "Feeling Frisky?"

Location: The Catalina Hotel
Time: 1 PM to 1AM
Talent: Pole Folder, Luke Fair, Sultan, Ned Shepard, Maher Daniel, Trafik, and more...
Cost: Free

Thursday, March 27: SOS Balance 013 Launch Party

I'm not really sure much needs to be said about this one that isn't implied in the title of the event, but I'll take a quick stab at it. The launch party for the latest edition of the infamous Balance CD mixed across three discs by none other then the SOS trio of Desyn Masiello, Omid 16B, & Demi. Need I say more? These guys have been a hot item throughout the course of their relatively short time together. Sure Desyn's already had a go at the series, but trust me when I say this is an entirely different beast. Prepare for a great night of music that will see the SOS collective kicking off a year of busy international touring. And on a small side note, Pawn Shop is supposed to be a very unique and interesting venue.

Location: The Pawn Shop Lounge
Time: 10 PM to 5 AM
Talent: SOS featuring Desyn Masiello, Omid 16B, & Demi
Cost: $25 [http://www.wantickets.com/affiliates/affiliate_event_detail.asp?e_id=37701&id=270]
Note: This event will be happening concurrently @ Pawn Shop with the Kompakt party, which will be going on in a different portion of the venue. Featuring Gui Boratto, Ewan Pearson, and more

Friday, March 28: Sasha & John Digweed Boat Party

Every year the legacy of Sasha & Digweed's infamous WMC boat party grows larger. Being both one of the most talked about but also most exclusive events of the conference, I am honored to have the chance to attend and share my experience with our readers here at Progressive-Sounds. Because this event tends to be shrouded in mystery, I'm sure everyone will be extra interested in this one, aside from the fact that it features to dance music legends performing in a very intimate setting. This is the stuff dance music dreams are made of.

Location: Secret!
Talent: Sasha & John Digweed
Cost: Invitation Only

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Friday, March 28: Twilight On The Tikki With SOS

Giving Sasha and John a run for their money with one of the most exclusive boat parties of the conference are the SOS boys. Although this event is in fact public, very few tickets were made available at an extremely high price. But in any case, I doubt anyone who bought tickets to this event will be regretting it anytime soon, as the SOS trio is a hot item right now that is sure to provide maximum entertainment value for the dollar. To be honest, presented the choice I'm not sure which event I would rather attend!

Location: Tikki Boat
Time: 4PM to 9PM
Talent: SOS feat. Desyn Masiello, Omid 16B, & Demi
Cost: Sold Out!
Website: twilight on the tikki

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Friday, March 28: James Zabiela & Nic Fanciulli

This pairing of DJs unveiled their partnership as One + One last year during WMC, but will be focusing more on their solo projects in 2008. So this may be one of few events they DJ together this year and beyond. Without question they will go out in the true dance-floor rocking style they are known for, whether playing individually or together.

Location: Studio A
Time: 10 PM to 5 AM
Talent: James Zabiela & Nic Fanciulli, Tom Budden, KOS
Cost: $30 Tix
Website: Embrace Miami

Sander Kleinenberg and Renaissance return to present the first musical instalment of his 'This Is' moniker.

Sander Kleinenberg is a man who needs little introduction, between his many roles as DJ, label boss and producer he also finds time to host parties under his 'This Is...' moniker. With residencies ranging from his native Amsterdam via Paris, Ibiza and Miami, and alongside countless individual and headline appearances, Kleinenberg has delivered his unique musical vision to the world.

Sander himself expands, "I have always battled the idea of genres and labelling that goes on in today's world. Versatility makes a DJ strong. It makes it easier for us to adjust to different rooms, different countries, a different audience, different atmospheres in general."

It's this versatility that provides the backbone to the first 'This Is...' compilation. "It's like a puzzle", he says, "You have 28 pieces and somehow you have to make it all work together."

And what a puzzle - between each 14-track mix – Left & Right – he weaves a diverse selection of labels and artists sourcing the likes of Disk Jokke from Get Physical off-shoot Kindisch, Tom Novy's personal tribute to Sander on his 'Moscow Never Sleeps' remix and the excellent Gui Boratto re-work of Robert Babicz' 'Sin' – and that's just the first disc!
I put a little bit electro tunes that remembering me about the break dance scene when I was a kid.
Turning 'Right' we find an acapella from Italy's Siciana Soul marrying Rhythm & Sound, Nic Fanciulli's incredible remix of Martin Eyerer & Stephan Hinz, Motorcitysoul taking on David K to stunning effect plus the much hyped Dubfire interpretation of Smith & Selway's 'Transit Time'. As Sander perfectly sums up, "It's about merging

Gw sempet membaca ulasan dari Carl Craig di (mixmag) tahun 2002,dia membuat statement yg mengatakan "sounds is like a roller coaster in the sky" when you say it techno maybe some people say it disco, when you say it drum and bass somepeople can say it jungle jazz, when you say it disco some people say iy electro...
So stick around and hang on 2 your real character ,cause euphoria of idealism and eclectisism only live in a lonelyplanet, only on your mind  ;)
kesimpulannya menurut gw kata kunci dari semuanya adalah "CONSITENCY"....

any comments...... *piss*

PS : gw nggak mengkotakkan genre/sub genre ,only DJ Discussion..... *bgs*

Shur-i-kan aka Tom Szirtes is a highly respected producer in the independant music scene. His blend of musicality and dance floor sensibilities mean that his productions are in demand by many of the leading house record labels such as Freerange, NRK, Tronic Sole, Z Records, Slip & Slide and Strictly Rhythm.

After several years of playing keyboards in numerous jazz, funk and rock bands around London, Tom was discovered by legendary producer Tom Middleton who released his debut track "Niomi's Dream" on the now seminal Jedi's Night Out compilation.

Tom is a favourite and long time contributor to Jimpster's Freerange Records label - a relationship that started with the distinctly jazzy album "Advance" (2001) that caught the ears of luminaries such as LTJ Bukem, Mixmaster Morris and Pete Lawerence of Big Chill. The more dancey follow-up album "Waypoints" (2004) cemented Tom's reputation as a producer to watch for.

2006 has been a major milestone for Shur-i-kan with a string of EP releases such as Living Inside (remixed by Mike Monday) and Future Fantasy, I Want It, Finding Goa and Special Powers (collaborations with deep house don Milton Jackson), Underground Soul and remixes for the likes of Dave Lee, Trackheadz and Milton Jackson. Tom also DJs around the world and rocks crowds from Moscow to Tokyo, USA and back.

This only tells one half of the story however, Tom's love of hip-hop started as a producer on HKB:Finn's (of Katch 22) award winning album Vitalistiks back in 2003 and has developed as he now collaborates with several state side based acts as well as working with legendary label BBE and good friends and collegues D'Nell. Tom has also spent a stint working with the infamous improvisional dance super group The Bays and also part of Tom Middleton's Amba project.

2007 should be an exciting year with yet more quality house releases, the fruits of the hip-hop collaborations coming of age and perhaps a new long player.

For DJ bookings please send me a message on myspace.

About Paul Thomas
PAUL THOMAS

"Paul is one of the most consistent and freshest djs around!" Nic Fanciulli

"Only every now a then a DJ a talented and fresh as Paul comes along, I have a feeling I will be seeing him a lot more of him and his music this year!" Fergie

"A wicked producer, fantastic DJ and a top guy to boot. There is no question Paul is headed for the top." Rui Da Silva

Godskitchen resident, Toolroom records producer and stalwart member of the nu breed of house music DJs, at only 27 Paul Thomas is someone who is causing something of a major stir in the dance music fraternity. With props from some of the most highly respected producers and DJs around (Pete Tong, Sasha, Steve Lawler, Mark Knight and Fergie), his own clubbing brand (Dex in the City) and a raft of upcoming releases planned for 2007 Paul is undoubtedly one of those artists who makes you sit up and take notice.

Paul has been DJing since 1998 and earned his stripes at some of the early Sundissential parties and Stereo, where he was noticed by Bedrocks Steve Gerrard. However, it was not until 2003 that he had a massive breakthrough, being signed as Godskitchen's resident to open their own flagship venue Air. Since then, with the backing of the Godskitchen crew, his profile has risen enormously. A mammoth 6hr set NYE earned him a legion of fans and an official residency with the UK's biggest club.

During 2004, Paul played for Godskitchen more than any other dj, spinning alongside Groove Armada, Fergie, Sasha, Carl Cox, John Digweed, Layo & Bushwacka!, Adam Freeland, Jon Carter, Xpress2 and many more. During the summer of 2004, Paul brought his Dex In The City brand to Godskitchen, hosting the 2nd room on a monthly basis. The 2nd Dex In The City party at the club saw Paul play a 3hr back to back set with Nic Fanciulli. To top off 2004, Paul played alongside Erick Morillo at Godskitchen's New Years Eve ball.

2005 was a very busy year indeed for this young man. As well as playing many massive dates at Godskitchen & Dex In The City in the UK, Paul played twice at Global Gathering, including playing the last set in the Babooshka arena to a crowd of over 4000 clubbers. Paul has also taken on numerous gigs around the world; taken on as Godskitchen's official world tour dj in the Spring he played dates in Indonesia, Malaysia, South Korea, South Africa, Sweden, Romania, Poland, Russia and Ukraine.

During 2006 Paul add to his international experience with a set at Shanghai's exlcusive Bon Bon club, regarded as their best night yet. 2006 was also the year he made his USA debut after signing an exclusive management deal with Elite Level based in Washington D.C. Paul clocked up the air miles by playing high profile parites all over the world. Back in the UK, the Godskitchen residency went from strength to strength, and the highlight of the year was spinning at 2 of the most high profile festivals, HiFi & Global Gathering, where a set after Sasha to 15,000 people on the BBC Radio 1 stage being regarded as one of the festivals best. 2006 also saw Paul venture into the world of production. His 1st release with Funkagenda under their PTFA guise came out on Mark Knight's Toolroom imprint. Original tracks Chemcial Reaction & For You were released on the legendary Whoop! label after being featured on Fergie's One For One Music piece on Radio 1. Paul's remix of Funkagenda's Underground on Red was so popular it accounted for 56% of all downloads on its own.

2007 will be a year on tour, with shows in Brazil, USA, Indonesia, China, Egypt, Poland, Russia, Romania, Hungary, Belgium and many more already in the diary. Further tours for Godskitchen Worldwide are planned in Ukraine, Germany, Dubai, Norway, South Korea, Malaysia, Turkey, Holland and at the Zurich Love Parade, Switzerland. Paul will also be playing at this years huge Global Gathering in Stratford. The Dex In The City brand is again causing a major stir in the UK club scene, throwing some off-the-wall parties in warehouses & car park's and knocking down musical barriers in the process.

Production is the key for this year and the Funkagenda & Paul Thomas aka PTFA remix of Disciples of Sound's Perfect Motion has been signed to the new Godskitchen complilation, and will be one of the highlights at the WMC and in Ibiza this year. In My Mind has been snapped up by Cosmonote Blue. In the December issue of M8 Paul received full page accolades for his rework of Bassheads – Is There Anybody Out There and it is no wonder Paul was given a New Producers feature on Radio 1. His 1st mix compilation will be released in April in conjunction with FHM Asia, which will feature exclusive material of his own. His latest release, Slubberdegullion on Toolroom has been snapped up to the new Kissdafunk & Godskitchen Albums respectively.

All in all it promises to be a very successful year for this talented and deserving young man.

New York promoters Made Event are the peeps behind some of the most talked about past nights at the Miami Winter Music Conference. The line-up for the Sunday School for Degenerates all-day bender at the Pawn Shop is still to be announced, but looks like an early contender for best of the closing parties.

As in past years, most of the Made parties will take place at the Pawn Shop in Downtown Miami and at B.E.D on South Beach - both will be refit with Integral sound systems. Parties hosted by Armin Van Buuren will take place at Twilo Miami and another venue still to be confirmed.
