Since it's launch Transitions has become one of - if not - the most anticipated releases in the compilation calendar; over the past two years its single disc, twice-yearly format has provided dance music fans a regular, contemporary snapshot of John. Now the first chapter in the Transitions' series reaches its conclusion with the highly anticipated fourth volume.

"This was perhaps the hardest one yet," says Digweed, "The proximity between releases meant each new volume was strongly influenced by its predecessor - as we moved from one to the other they had to relate and make sense. "

So, a real challenge. Just how did John go about tackling it?

"I've developed the amount of tracks and layering over the series," he elaborates, "And we've taken it to the next level with this latest volume, it's the most intense and intrinsic yet, which meant replacements, additions, editing and a lot of time consuming assessments and re-assessments."

Over the course of 22 tracks and 73 minutes John weaves a unique musical thread. From favourites such as Ink & Needle, Guy J and Pig & Dan through to welcome debuts from Henry Saiz, Myers Briggs or Soliquid, all are concisely constructed in the mix to the point where 3 are often playing at anyone time. Infact, due the resulting complexity, John decided to re-structure the trackmark points to better reflect the more developed passages – and so 22 records became 10 (see full tracklist below), as he elaborates, "In trackmarking this way I am able to highlight the unique qualities of the mix. Whilst it hopefully retains that signature Digweed sound, I've used modern production techniques to create an album that's unlike anything you'll ever hear me do in a club.But its all still in the progressive house roots with some mixture of the latest elements.

And the future? "Let's keep it about this latest volume for now," John affirms, "Otherwise I think I'd be doing it a disservice!" We couldn't agree more: Transitions Vol.4 is one of the most original compilations you'll hear this year and a fitting finale to the series in its current guise.

Paul van Dyk seems to have struck the right balance between commercial success and underground appeal.

The prolific electronic dance music producer has topped international DJ lists, earned a Grammy nomination for the 2003 album "Reflections" and gotten the masses to embrace his techno and trance-tinged influences on film, TV, even Jeep and Motorola ads.

Recently, he was awarded Berlin's medal of honor for his children's charities in Mumbai and Germany.

Yet, performing at a concert at New York City's Central Park humbles the 35-year-old, who began DJing as a teen in Germany before the Berlin Wall came down.

"I remember the first time I played here, I believe I still played with vinyl," van Dyk said during a soundcheck break. "It's always very special to be in the middle of this vibrant, creative, buzzing city -- in the park -- and to have a fantastic audience in front of you."

Hours before showtime, the Berlin-based artist spoke with The Associated Press about his new CD, "In Between," politics and why the "whole pop star concept" is lost on him.

AP: You have this really eclectic range of artists on the new album like David Byrne and one of the Pussycat Dolls. What was that like in the studio?

van Dyk: Every collaboration had a different kind of structure to it. With Jessica (Sutta of the Pussycat Dolls), the track was ready, we had the lyrics written and everything, and I was like looking for someone who actually can bring the whole track across vocally as much as with the whole package. We contacted Jessica and she really loved the track. With David Byrne ... management said 'Let's get the guys together, they should talk.' We had a few phone calls, talking about everything, even weather, and what we like musically, where we want to go with it, what we want to do with it. I did a layout of some music and he really liked it. He came back with some other melodies on top and I incorporated it, and then back and forth until the point that we both loved it.

AP: Growing up in East Berlin, what kind of influence did that have on you artistically?

van Dyk: Obviously, if I look back now, we were missing out on so much in East Germany. It was a communistic dictatorship and food supply was limited and all that kind of stuff. My mom really tried to prepare a childhood for me that was happy and this is sort of what my general memory is ... I could never buy a record, I could never actually buy a magazine and read anything about my favorite artists, so for me, it was purely the music, purely what I heard on the radio, and I still have that. I don't really sort of get this whole pop star concept stuff 'cause it's not part of what music is to me ... it's not how I sort of see music, not how I hear music.

AP: Do you think techno is one of those misunderstood genres?

van Dyk: The thing is ... it's the biggest youth culture all over the world, then obviously it's not misunderstood. What still is kinda like strange is a (lack) of respect toward electronic music within a majority of music journalists and even parts of the industry that say it's not real music -- which is obviously complete nonsense because the computer is only doing what I'm telling it to do. So, I have to be musically trained, I have to be talented. That's the thing, a computer is nothing more than a modern 8-track recorder in a way.

AP: Besides keyboards, do you play other instruments?

van Dyk: I learned playing the guitar a little when I was 12. I always wanted to play like Johnny Marr from The Smiths and they made me play East German folk songs, so I wasn't really satisfied with the outcome. I would never go on stage with my talent (laughter).

AP: You were part of the 2004 "Rock the Vote" campaign. Any plans to be involved in 2008?

van Dyk: Well, there's different contacts already, different organizations ... I think it's necessary, to be honest, because democracy is on the edge more than ever, especially in the (United) States. I really believe this country was hijacked. It just comes down to basic democracy, you should really shut up and complaining about George W. Bush if you don't go out and vote.

AP: Explain why you decided to launch VONYC, the Internet radio station and music store.

van Dyk: The majority of the music industry, especially like the big major companies, slept through the development of what happened with MP3s and all that. When they realized that they started to actually blame the audience. In order to change that you need to put some decent content into the Net, so I thought, "OK, what would I like to have?" First of all, a radio station that plays my favorite music 24 hours a day, so we created that with VONYC ... and the next thing whatever I hear, I want to know what it is and I want to buy it, so we created that.

AP: What's on your iPod these days?

van Dyk: Placebo did an album with a lot of cover versions. That was the last thing (downloaded). The last Linkin Park album is fantastic. And, of course, a lot of electronic music.

I regret to inform you that I have had to pull out of playing the two gigs in Indonesia set to take place this weekend - Jakarta on the 30th March and Bali on the 31st.

We will be looking to reschedule these gigs as soon as possible, and I apologise to all of those who have made plans to come down to see me on either of the dates, further apologies to all those involved in setting things up for me in Indonesia.

This is the first of a two part series - an article where we get some of the biggest tune tips for the coming months from some of the best in the business. No one can deny the Winter Music Conference is a big influence on the DJing habits of many DJs worldwide each year. Everyone wants to know who was playing what, and what is coming up. Well, this is where you find some of that important info out.

I dialed up some of the most respected musical tastemakers and asked them what tunes are big for them right now, or what they think will be big in the near future. Some of the people I spoke to were on their way to Miami. Others were busy in the studio or DJing and weren't going to make it.

I heard back about so many tunes that this feature has been split into two articles. The first will cover the more house, tribal and progressive tunes, and the second part will cover the more electronic and techno. Some of the respondents were nice enough to add a few comments to their selections. Enjoy!

2. Who Made Who - Out The Door (Superdiscount remix) (Gomma)
- Superdiscount never disappoints, and this is awesome, funky as hell.

- Claude and his farty basslines... a nice dirty little club rocker.

2. Till West & DJ Delicious - Same Man (Original Mix) (Phunkwerk)
- This track just rips shit up, it's been out for a few months but I know its gonna be cained by everyone in Miami! Its electro touched house without any plinky plonk nonsense.

3. Steve Mac VS Mosquito feat. Steve Smith - Lovin You More (Solid Groove Rmx) (Hussle Black/M.O.S.)
- Mr Mac has been doing the damage but I think this remix is the bomb. It's gonna work well on the beach with cocktails and pretty ladies everywhere!

- BIG Tune from Lajja Recs. The original is very cool and with a good structure. Frank's mix is INCREDIBLE! Something for the underground heads! Out on Lajja after WMC.

2. Carlos Fauvrelle - Terceira (Orig/Peter Bailey mix) (Meridua Recs, Portugal)
- Carlos new label Meridua with this big Jam. The original mix is very Dark and Muscled, and Bailey's mix is Huge as usual!

3. Chus & Ceballos - Wrong About Me (Portuguese Mafia Rmx) (Stereo Productions, Spain)
- Our own Portuguese Mafia project (a.k.a. Carlos Fauvrelle & Mike Morales). This one is very Drummy, Synthy and Portuguese! Peak hour madness! Coming out on Stereo Productions (soon after the conference!)

1. David Kassi - Paralyzed in Heaven (Ready Mix Records)
- When remarkable progressive meets superb tribal and a sizzling productions. The outcome is David Kassi. Look out!

2. Tarot - Everything U Feel (Ready Mix Records)
- Did someone mention Tunnel at 8 AM in 1994 with a futuristic edge and quality that's 2006? Dance floor Mayhem.

3. Vibe Dealers - Vibe Di Laine (Criminal Records)
- Listen to this one on a big system and feel the strobe. Smart programming & phat analogue synths will give you shivers.

1. Big Brooklyn Red - He Moves (Deep Haven Music)
- A classic garage tune with a sublime male vocal and an oh so soulful vibe. Remixes from Man-X and Woz.

2. DJ Hal Feat. Jay Thomas - Zero G (Ambiosphere Recordings)
- Tony Thomas kicks of his new chilled label with some super cool material. Laid back, percussive and with a seductive female vocal, a label just can't go wrong with a release this good.

3. Moonbeam feat Amigo - Love and Rain (Moonbeam Records)
- A blinding new track from these shit hot Russian producers who're masters at blending progressive, tribal and electronic styles into one along with stunning vocals.

4. Njoi - Anthem (Alternative Route Records)
- An early 90's classic re-released to do the damage once again. Remixed to perfection by Njoi themselves and Hoxton Whores.

2006 is certainly looking very bright for 26 year old Oxford University graduate James Holden. His Border Community label is currently hailed as one of the world's hottest labels with its 12" releases shifting serious units, his productions and remixes receiving rave reviews and a DJ schedule that includes dates in just about every continent.

To a music world overly obsessed with scenes, the James Holden success story reads like a catalogue of contradictions. 2003's collaboration with vocalist Julie Thompson, 'Nothing', was picked up by legendary UK house label Loaded, then hailed by trance legend Tiesto as his tune of the year. Holden has remixed everything from quirky Cologne pop on Crosstown Rebels to mainstream dance pop on Positiva; New Order to Britney Spears; Black Strobe terror-electro to System 7 psy-trance and delicate Lo Recordings electronica; fast-rising young upstart Nathan Fake to Kirsty Hawkshaw's timeless classic 'Fine Day'. Meanwhile the chunky techno earthquake of 'A Break in the Clouds', the debut release on his own Border Community label, has become an underground European techno classic, still flying out of the warehouse over two years after release, and winning Holden a firm following amongst the ever forward-thinking German dance fraternity.

However, Holden's DJ sets have been an almost mirror image of not only the diverse remixes and beautiful dance music that he makes but also reflect the flowing groove and unclassifiable depths to the different elements and genres that his productions encompass. Here on this double CD mix set we find James Holden firmly 'At The Controls', creating and shaping a new aural environment for us to embrace and get lost in. Despite his accomplished career , "At the Controls" is his first UK based compilation. His previous 2004 Balance compilation on Australian label EQ was only available on import.

"The idea was just to make a compilation that I'd think is good", states James by matter of fact. "Mostly I hate DJ mixes, so that's the main thing that influenced this - trying to justify my 2 CDs with a load of music that I really love. Through Resist we've been able to get permission to use some tracks I never dreamt I'd be able to get, so it's turned out being a cross section of music that I'm really happy with. Lot's of it comes from the little family of friends around Border Community. And recommendations from my hairdresser!" he says jokily. "And of course the depths of my iTunes folder - things I've been listening to for 10 years wanting to put on a mix CD."

For Holden this mix also represents a technological evolution from 2003's 'Balance 005' mix which utilised a Cycloops sampler and CDJ-1000 wizardry. Although on one hand his studio set up hasn't change too much bar the odd computer upgrade since he made the decidedly trancey 'Horizons' during his summer holiday break from studying maths at Oxford University at the age of 19 on a 500 quid PC, James is very much aware of the technological advances being made in both music production and application and is further bringing these elements in to his DJ sets.

"The other thing about this CD is how I put it together," adds Mr. Holden. "It's not just geek-toy-love, because how you make music always affects the outcome. Using a DJ controller I've been developing with some engineering friends, along with a heap of software and custom hacks of things, I managed to make a setup where I could make a good representation of what my style (as a producer and as a club DJ) is about, and could do it live. So the CD has a few mistakes in it but that's totally unimportant, because the feel of it is right and the noise and chaos suits me. More importantly the music is right - the way things go together and how one track leads you to the next. Which is the point of a mix CD, I think. All this music, to me, belongs together. It doesn't matter that I've mixed from psy-trance into 70s krautrock because the feel of those songs makes it make sense. They make each other better by being together musically. In that way (as well as the gratuitous digital noise) the CD fits with me too - I dont want to fit into any scene either."

Just turned 26 years old, James Holden now finds himself exactly where he wants to be. As the digital producer par excellence he is blazing a trail through as yet unchartered territory, showing those who follow in his wake how it can, and should, be done. As a DJ he gets to travel the world, surprising and delighting in equal measures, and enlarging his band of followers at every port of call. And at the helm of his own buzz label Border Community he is proving himself to be quite the A&R man, discovering like-minded souls to help turn his musical vision into reality and constantly striving to give something special back to the record-buying public. Underlying these three components of the James Holden recipe for success is an unerring belief in his own vision and a refusal to do things the way others tell him they always have been done. He is well into the process of carving out a niche all of his very own, and is not about to let anyone stop him now. As the Border Community Express ploughs on into the future, here once again we find James Holden steadfast 'At The Controls'.

"AT THE CONTROLS" comes at a time with James Holden firmly in the spotlight of the world, with his profile as a DJ, producer, and A&R man growing every day.

"At The Controls" shines as truly visionary mix, that could comfortably end up as one of the highlights of 2006.
