Francois Dubois & Master H - La Balance (Incl. Remix)

1. La Balance (Original Mix)
2. La Balance (Dirt Crew Remix)

Our favourite Gallic alter-ego meets a real Frenchman as master of the deep and Funk D'Void's uncanny doppelganger, François DuBois, comes head to head with Master H. François, whose exquisite piano-driven 'I Try' soundtracked the summer and was listed as the 8th biggest tune of 2007 by iDJ magazine, brings his usual smooth, sumptuous chords, while Master H injects some va va voom. German über-men, Dirt Crew, slam in with a resolute remix to complete this tasty package.

1. 'La Balance' – Flying across the tracks like a run-away train, François' trademark lush, emotive chords are slotted into a pacey tribal-tech percussive rhythm. Layers build and draw you in. All aboard!

2. 'La Balance'(Dirt Crew Remix) – More straight-up and stripped-back, this strident interpretation doesn't beat around the bush and demands your attention.

The name of François DuBois was on the lips of house music lovers and the playlists of an array of world-renowned DJs from Sasha to Pete Tong in 2006, following the emergence of the underground hit of the year 'Blood.' Last year's follow-up, 'I Try,' came to equal prominence, enlivening beaches and terraces throughout the summer.

François' partner in crime on this third Urbantorque release is Hassen Gouaned, better known as Soma, F-Communications & Vega Records artist, Master-H. H's technical wizardry on the decks and his edgy house style have ensured that he's attracted attention throughout his career, and in cahoots with François he's proved his worth again.

Dirt Crew are German duo James Flavour and Break 3000. Often combining deep house with the new crisp sound from the minimal scenes, they've notched up an impressive discography with releases on their own Dirt Crew Recordings and Moodmusic amongst others.

REMY IRWAN

Alongside his fellow DJ friends back in the early 90s, Remy Irwan pioneered what today has become a scene that is so strong and diverse in Indonesia; they introduced the "underground sound" to the Indonesian scene.

As the first underground dance club [B1] in Jakarta opens, he was naturally appointed its resident. Infusing deep house, tribal, progressive and techno in his sets, he played an important part in spread heading the sound that today are being played in clubs in Indonesia.

Taking years to finally get to what everyone knows today, he has had his first hand experiences on witnessing how the Indonesian scene is evolving, as a lot of numbers of club opens and closes, and another club re-opens and closes again, where he had been the resident for some of them.

Finally in 2002, he joined Embassy as they opened their doors for the first time. From then on, he witnessed how the scene was getting even bigger and bigger, as Jakarta started being considered as one of the key players in the dance scene development throughout Asia.

After years of witnessing and experiencing a great number of talented international artists coming in and out, sharing his booth with renowned world DJ like Satoshi Tomiie, Chris Fortier, Mistress Barbara, Christian Smith, Blank & Jones, Laurent Garnier Kevin Saunderson,Smokin Jo, Derrick May..etc  and performed at We Love Space Sundays in Ibiza alongside Felix Da Housecat, Dj Sneak, and Groove Armada... Now it's his time to take on the world.

For Derek howell, shall we just say that music comes naturally to him. From an early age Derek was heavily into and surrounded by music, listening to many an artist from Pink floyd to Jimi Hendrix and even his mother who was a country and western singer...it was his mother that inspired Derek to continue his quest in music from learning the guitar at an early age to then turning to writing and producing his own, to great effect!!.

Those into their EDM will see how Derek over the last 4 years has had many a release on labels like Bedrock / Lost language / EQ Recordings / DK Records / Ultra / Proton / Fade ...just a name a few!!.

He productions skills and QUALITY releases have landed him on CD Compilations like...... Global Underground 028 / A State Of Trance 2005 / Balance :008 / Renaissance Sequential Hernan Cattaneo....the list goes on! Top jock's constantly supporting his material from Sasha / Digweed / Seaman / Nick Warren / Desyn Masiello......Phew!!

The world has many a great DJ / Producer and for me Derek Howell is certainly up there with the best of them. Long May it continue!!

01...When and where did you actually start your career, and what made you get into it?

I guess it was about 4 years ago that I began to get serious about making music because that was the time that I realized I really wanted to do this as much as possible. I'm usually most happy and care-free when sitting in front of the computer screen with a midi controller and an idea. I started making music for fun, but really got into when it gave something personal back to me.

02....For those not yet familiar with your Djing and Productions, how would you describe your style?

My tastes are always changing, but my style typically revolves around something melody driven. I like music in many different forms with regards to djing, but when it comes to my own productions, most people would probably say that I tend to keep a certain level of tonal harmony in there for good measure. This is generally the case with music I've released thus far, but who knows what tomorrow may bring. I'm trying not to have too stringent of a style, though as many producers might tell you, it's hard to get away from yourself sometimes.

03...You have such a varied sound in your productions, who are your influences?

There are lots of influences of course, so I'll just do the hit list off the top of my head:

Pink Floyd (favourite band in the world), Garbage, Hendrix, The Doors, Fleetwood Mac, Depeche Mode, Peter Martin, Smashing Pumpkins, Phil Collins, Michael Jackson, David Bowie, etc. (there are surely many others that are huge influences both directly and indirectly).

04...What have you got coming up in the next few months with regards to releases and remixes?

I have a 3 track EP due out on the Proton Music label around the middle of this month and perhaps a remix or two on the same label. After that I have an EP called the "Androgynous Cats EP" which is due out on the Lost Language label in late March. Also, I'm working on another long term project, but not ready to speak too much about it at the moment. ;-)

05...What kind of tools do you use to make your tracks?

I'm pretty simple thus far. I use FL Studio, Acid Pro and an E-MU midi controller. I use these really old Creative Labs PC speakers to monitor my sound. I should probably upgrade to some real monitors, but I'm quite happy with everything else for the moment. It's a seemingly simple, but quite effective setup for me.

06...Which Producers/DJs do you tip for 2007?

I have to say CPM from Argentina is making some great stuff these days and will definitely be a force to look out for. Other than that I can't really be sure at the moment, but we'll know soon enough.

07...What are your future goals set?

I want to start a band with a couple of my production partners and write good pop music/whatever we feel like writing. I want to learn another language or two, and I want to score a movie (preferably several movies). There are other goals, but I like to take on a small set of miracles first, then move on.

08...It's seems everyone these days is calling themselves a DJ. What do you think makes a good DJ?

I'm not the authority on what technically makes a good dj, but I think a good dj is someone who puts a level of work into it and treats it, in some respect, like a job. I think the best djs love to dj and, therefore, put in the wrench time to learn their records and how to best play the style of music they like to spin. In my opinion, being really into the music that you play and knowing all about it as well as the club crowds you play for is all a product of loving your job.

09...The scene has definitely progressed since you first started. What do you think about that?

I think it will continue moving, but not necessarily towards any one thing of course. The longer you are aware of what goes on in the scene, the more you realize that things come and go in cycles. For example; acid house has come and gone then come back again just as electro has, but when they come back into the "limelight" they are always changed by the listeners who are finally ready to make a statement of their own. I know I'm not finished listening to music yet and I'm certainly not finished writing music, just as the rest of the producers and soon-to-be producers in this world are constantly listening, discovering, and re-discovering old and new music alike. We all listen (to music and the world around us) and create art accordingly so these little bits come and go, but there will always be something new and different attached to the bits. I'm not sure if that answers your question or if I simply over-romanticized the answer, but I definitely tried. ;-)

10...What do you do when you are not behind the decks or in the studio?

I do things that are probably similar to what many people my age do. I watch a lot of movies and go out to the local pubs/clubs with my friends and drink beer and talk about music and other things we won't vividly recall the next day. I spend time at my parents' house when I can and I try to keep my apartment clean, but it doesn't work too well because I certainly don't want to spend too much time away from the studio and there are only so many hours in the day.... :-)

Thank you so much for this interview Derek. Keep pushing out your soundz!! I look forward to your Exclusive set for my show...Isle Groove,  this coming Saturday 10th Feb @ www.danceradio.gr 21:00 GMT / 16:00 EST

House / 50 cents of MARK FARINA
11/06/07, 16:27
Veteran DJ Mark Farina is in considerably good spirits despite the merging time difference when I call, although my archaic analogue recording unit seems hell-bent on hindering our interview as if a catastrophic event waiting to unravel.

"I can barely hear you.." he says in a distinct American drawl down the phone line. I apologise for the unforeseen technical difficulties and quiz him on how his day's gone.

"Let's see I'm going to Mexico tomorrow" he muses. "So, I'm just packing for that, I'm playing there this weekend, just getting some music together". With more than twenty years experience jet-setting the world and packing out clubs across the globe, house legend Mark Farina is as well known for his downtempo acid jazz sets (the Mushroom Jazz sound) as he is for his trademark deep house fusion styles.

Farina got into house music in the late 80s in Chicago, when his friendship began with the infamous Derrick Carter - who he maintains still keeps in contact with. "Yeah, I saw him a couple of weeks ago" Farina adds. From the friendship forged the track 'Mood' in 1989 which is widely credited as being the first Ambient House record.

In 1992, along with Patty Ryan-Smith, he started the legendary Monday night club 'Mushroom Jazz' in San Francisco, playing downtempo tracks, and will be soon releasing the sixth compilation of the same name. Every story has a beginning, for Mark a native of Chicago is adamant San Francisco (now home) is a great musical 'melting pot' but also hints his youth an ebbing influence growing up.

"In my early high school years I went to a lot of concerts" recalls Farina. "1984-85 a lot of new-wavish concerts; The Cure, The Smiths, Ministry, Front 242 DJing that kind of stuff. I started off with industrial at the time; the clubs would play industrial type music. I also started playing some early Detroit techno and acid with the industrial stuff to get into classic stuff more, and of course on the radio at that time in Chicago in the 80s there were the house mixes out on the radio every day. I didn't know what the sounds were, I just recorded them and mixed them on the radio."

Farina heartedly recalls his high school years citing his musical pedigree, a background learning trumpet and drums as a solid induction and bearing on his musical journey. A sentiment that has him regarded him by his peers as one of the most respected pioneers in the industry.

"Yeah, definitely growing up in the 80s." says Mark. "As well as playing drums in a cover band, we did originals but we did a lot of covers, New Wave and 80s groups were such a big influence and that seems to have come back around, that sound has influenced a lot of artists today especially in Chicago which had the fusion of house and industrial, it was a very good thing to have in my musical upbringing. Chicago's just a musical town in general. Playing drums, trumpet, just reading music helps you as a DJ."

Now happily transplanted in San Francisco, Mark finds time divided between producing and mixing his own music, largely thanks to prolific releases on Om Records (Mushroom Jazz and House of Om) and Farinas' own label - Great Lakes Audio. Mark is quite coy about his future, conceding his views on balancing private life and work, "a natural correlation between the two." I usually streamline it to keep things to what I can handle." admits Farina.

"I think any DJ that goes through this is pacing themselves to be productive and do gigs, and knows when their bodies have had enough, so I think I'm lucky so far" (laughs). Mark goes on to reflect on the rigours of travelling and the toll taken on his private life, but deftly denies any plans to retire on his plaudits just yet.

"Um, gee I don't know, not really - I mean maybe not doing enough sometimes, some options here I could've taken or just too busy here or there, but generally I wouldn't change a lot of things. Maybe exercise more or eat healthier foods maybe?"

"You know I've gotten pickier as I grow older and try to put in a better sound system, those kinds of things," he laughs. "I haven't got bored of spinning; luckily new music keeps coming out all the time and makes my job easier because as long as there's good new stuff that needs to be played I'm game. Also sometimes air travel can be not as pleasant as it used to be, some of the long term effects wear off when flights get delayed or you get stuck in airports, those kinds of things. The whole club thing and DJing, people and shows, small shows and festivals, I still enjoy it, you can't really predict what's going to happen."

Changes over the years from analogue to digital recording, have signalled an advent of change, with some DJs opting to play tracks from cd rather than vinyl. One of the advantages is playing individual remix tracks and more creativity, as Farina points out, "a lot of labels have slowed down their output of vinyl, at the moment we're doing vinyl" he divulges. "And now we're just switching over to digital and trying to figure out a plan because there are a lot of labels switching over to a digital format."

I ask him if there are any other noticeable changes in the music scene. "In America things are different than you guys down there. In America a lot of clubs are 21 and up which I think is not a bad situation, I mean down there the drinking age isn't so rigid and here all DJs play a 21 and up club, but you don't get such a younger crowd, who don't get to hear a lot of DJs I've found."

"Only a couple of cities in America do a couple of 18 and up related parties. Yeah I'd like to see that change, otherwise things are progressing good. Chicago house seems to crossover a lot of different sub-genres that people say is the house of today, Chicago house has a lot of stuff in it that kind of helps me whether the moods change. It's still house you know? The terminology changes from year to year."

New Zealand's geographical isolation from the rest of the world is one reason gaining popularity for overseas DJs to come down to visit. It's an isolation that permeates our music and culture, fostering a nurturing environment for local DJs, who if lucky enough can squander a decent living from it. "I think people there, are really extra hip to everything that's going on in the world." adds Farina.

"For being so far away people may think you might know that, but you don't know all the music things happening in England or the US and other places as well. You get quite an influence down there and I've found my friends down there - especially on the internet, are just as up on tunes as I am." But despite the solitude from the world community, you'd be surprised to hear we don't lag that far behind the rest of the world.

"England I think is still a hot bed." he continues. "Germany has quite a lot of good stuff, different cities in the US they're doing a lot of good deep house, there's also a lot of good Canadian stuff coming out, and of course from Australia and New Zealand. I get a lot of good tunes from down your way - I think that's the one thing about the whole internet and just the way it's gotten a little smaller, you can get a tune from anywhere and it could be really good. It could be wherever, Bulgaria, it could be Mexico - whenever I'm out I usually get given tunes and you get some good, some bad. You help or try and tell them, sometimes you get a really good track from somewhere you don't expect."

A huge Gunners fan, Farina is audibly excited talking about the "other" passion in his life: Arsenal Football Club, and is quite bummed out that he will be missing a Champion's League match while he is away. He's elated about tripping down this way later in the year while I manage to prise open one of his secrets to successful DJing.

"Whenever I DJ in whatever city, I leave the TV on in the hotel room, it's kind of a superstitious thing. How's that? Nobody knows that."

Needless to say there hasn't been a bad gig yet.

Joining an impressive list of dance music greats such as Paul van Dyk, John Digweed, Sasha, Ferry Corsten, Tiesto and Carl Cox, Christopher Lawrence has been invited to host his very own arena at Holland's and perhaps Europe's most prestigious dance event - Dance Valley 2007!

The concept is in the name of the Arena - "Continental". Lawrence's appreciation for music and talent stems from being entrenched in the business for over a decade, and so it was apt that he invited the crème de la crème of the planet's best to play in his own arena.

Now in it's thirteenth year, Dance Valley is the jewel in the crown of the European summer festival circuit, boasting massive and highly produced, themed stage areas, cafés, a campsite with supermarket and even an outdoor cinema. Known as "the Woodstock of Dance", the festival attracts DJs and fans from around the world.

So, on Saturday July 14th, Christopher and his band of world-wide jocks will descend on Dance Valley to host the Continental arena, presented by Christopher himself. This line-up reflects the consideration Lawrence has for global dance music, and certainly this will not be the last you will hear of the Continental concept, with plans in the works to bring it to the UK soon.
