A new tough jacking funk has typified the recent output of the city for the world's cooler floors with Claude VonStroke's dirtybird label making the loudest noise. But scroll back four years to 2003 and one of dirtybird's soon-to-be founder members was being signed to Ben Watt's Buzzin' Fly label in London. His name is Justin Martin. Born in West Hartford, Connecticut and settled in San Francisco, Justin was first spotted in 2003 as a 23 year-old rookie DJ-producer by independent film producer Barclay Crenshaw (later to find fame under his DJ pseudonym Claude VonStroke). At Miami WMC the same year Justin's brother handed Ben Watt Justin's demo CD in a darkened South Beach club. It was an auspicious start. Ben signed the opening track, 'The Sad Piano', as soon as he got back to London and since its glorious release as a single and its equally glorious heavily-licensed Charles Webster remix appeared, Justin has been steadily making a name for himself as one of San Francisco's brightest talents. Recording, DJing and remixing regularly for Buzzin' Fly, as well as for dirtybird (which he helped launch), Utensil and Classic, he has developed a unique sweet 'n' ugly style that is one part brutal tech-funk, one part joyous, goofy beauty. The past six months have seen his star in the ascendance, and following his recent clutch of hotly received tracks ('The Fugitive' and 'THE WATER SONG' on Buzzin' Fly, 'STOOPIT' on dirtybird, and his 'VESUVIUS' remix for Freerange), and some scintillating DJ sets that have seen him added to Kim Benjamin's illustrious bookings agency, the time has come to deliver his debut mix compilation. Recorded in San Francisco in July 2007, the selection in part draws heavily on the scene that fostered him; Worthy, Tanner Ross and his brother Christian Martin are all among Justin's closest friends from the streets of North Filmore, and all throw their own home-grown shapes into the mix. From Europe, Justin reaches for touchtone modern techno producers such as the ever-inventive Robag Wruhme and Poker Flat's Martin Landsky, as well as London's Jamie 'Jimpster' Odell and the red-hot Audiofly, but it is perhaps his own productions that draw the attention most; the splendid quirky and comic intro and outro is Justin through and through, (as anyone who has witnessed his infectious party style will testify), while his imminent single for Buzzin' Fly, 'Nightowl', is a brilliant contemporary percussive latino-tech ride that is already rocking floors from London to Ibiza. 'Ghetto Train' shows his production dexterity and imagination at its peak, sampling train noises to create the ultimate urban groove. It is time to applaud a new talent. SURYA PRO TURN ON PLASTIC Presents CLAUDE VON STROKE (Dirtybird Recordings, San Francisco) www.dirtybirdrecords.com www.myspace.com/claudevonstroke "I would like to come over...what are you having for dinner?" asks the creepy character in Claude VonStroke's first hit record, "Deep Throat." After selling through 10 pressings in 2005, "Deep Throat" quickly put VonStroke on the map as an up and coming artist. The success of the single was followed up by "Who's Afraid of Detroit?," another international hit championed by Richie Hawtin who called it the "best track of 2006" in DJ magazine. Soon after that Claude released his full length debut album, "Beware of the Bird" to excellent reviews, further establishing him as an original talent in the world of underground dance music. Since then, Claude has done remixes for a very diverse group of top artists ranging all the way from the indy rock band, The Rapture (Vertigo) to Jeff Samuel (Pokerflat). Claude VonStroke is better known to locals, as Barclay Crenshaw, the owner of San Francisco's quirky tech-funk label, dirtybird. The label consists of Crenshaw (VonStroke,) fellow producer Justin Martin, and a diverse assortment of top remixers from around the globe such as John Tejada, Audion, Diplo, 3 Channels, Dj Assault, and Kevin Saunderson. The idea for dirtybird began in 2003 when Crenshaw was producing an intense 5 hour DVD about electronic music called, "Intellect." The project was a labor of love, taking almost 2 years to complete and starring over 35 top producers and legendary DJs such as Derrick May, Swayzak, Derrick Carter, Deep Dish, Paul Van Dyk, Theo Parish, and many more. The main goal of the "Intellect" project was to make an informative dvd that could help DJs advance their careers in electronic music. The result was Crenshaw himself starting dirtybird records and a production career under the alias, Claude VonStroke. Since 2003, the label has managed to solidify a reputation for releasing oddball classic techno and house tracks. The outdoor dirtybird parties in San Francisco's scenic Golden Gate Park have also become a legendary summer destination point for both locals and international travelers. In addition to production and label management, Claude VonStroke has an intense regimen for preparation and a great ear for song selection. His DJ sets are always inspiring and surprising. You will never hear a set of monotonous music because Claude always takes time to find the special cuts that make for a completely original experience that is not to be missed. In April, 2006 Claude will go on tour in support of his first artist album on dirtybird. He also has singles due out on Get Physical, dirtybird, Frankie, Neuton Music. And in 2007, Claude is hard at work on his second album. He also has plans to introduce a new deep techno sub-label this year called "Mothership." TURN ON PLASTIC Live featuring FRED AVRIL & BARBARA MORGENSTERN A French / German live electronic music performance FRED AVRIL Frederic Magnon is a Frenchman better known to the discerning music fans by Avril (well-known French thief of the 19th century). His music expresses a sense of freedom "with no limit", as his label, F Communication (Mr Oizo, Laurent Garnier, Readymade FC and artists with very different sounds) puts it: "electronics with no limit". Avril has won the Prix Constantin (the French version of the Mercury Music Prize) with his first album'That Horse Must Be Starving', but there was no way he was going to rest on his laurels for album number two. Live bass and drums were drafted in, as were the lush sounds of Serg. The result sounds like The DFA transplanted to Avril's home turf, the 18th arrondissement of Paris. He named his second album ìmembers onlyî, he wanted to placehis music below communitarism, mixing existing styles and codes into a single man's music. BARBARA MORGENSTERN Barbara Morgenstern music is raw, female, sensual, and essentially German, all at the same time. Some might describe it as Lo-Fi Pop, while others might call it electronic tinkering. At the same time, songwriting is also an important element in her music. But what make her refined sound truly unique are her vocals and her wonderful minimalist organ melodies. She just released her new album ("the grass is always greener"), earlier this year. Over the years, she has toured across Europeófrom Italy and Norway to Great Britain and even Moscow, also introducing her quirky harmonies to South America, Asia and Australia.
