Penjualan Musik dalam Format Vinyl (Piringan Hitam) Terus Meningkat 19 Januari 2012

Meski tetap saja penjualannya masih kecil dibandingkan penjualan keseluruhan penjualan CD dan MP3 namun meningkatnya popularitas vinil seperti mercusuar harapan bagi toko musik independen, industri yang telah menjadi korban sejak meningkatnya penjualan download digital satu dekade belakangan.

David Bakula, wakil presiden senior analytics di Nielsen Entertainment mengatakan, "Tren tentu saja berkesinambungan. Dan industri rekaman melakukan banyak hal hebat tidak hanya untuk membuat format (vinil) ini hidup lagi tapi juga membuatnya lebih menarik bagi konsumen."

Rekaman vinil sempat menjadi format utama distribusi musik komersil di abad 20. Tapi format ini kemudian hampir hilang setelah kemunculan kaset dan yang terbaru adalah media digital seperti CD dan MP3.  Namun untuk sebagian orang, vinil membangkitkan kenangan di era 60an dan 70an saat rock and roll menjadi raja. Saat pecinta musik mendengarkan  Elvis Presley dan Beatles lewat disk hitam yang diputar di turntable.

"Sejak 2007, vinil mulai tumbuh hingga seperti sekarang, 99 persen dari penjualan kami. Tahun 2007, saat mulai diperkenalkannya rilisan vinil baru dengan kartu download MP3 gratis, saat itu lah penjualannya mulai menanjak," ujar Bill Daly, pemilik toko music Crooked Beat di Washington DC. Menurut Daly penjualan vinil secara online juga meningkat. "Kami mengirimkan ke seluruh dunia hampir tiap hari. Kalian sebut satu negara, kami mungkin pernah mengirimkannya ke sana karena tidak banyak toko musik seperti ini di dunia."

Furnace MFG di Virginia yang sebelumnya memroduksi CD dan DVD kini produk utamanya adalah vinil. Eric Astor, kepala perusahaan ini mengatakan peningkatan produksi vinil untuk memenuhi permintaan yang tinggi telah menjadi tantangan. "Sudah tidak dibuat lagi mesin pressing untuk vinil sejak awal 1980an, jadi jika kalian menemukan peralatannya ini sudah tidak banyak yang tersedia," terang Astor yang mengatakan perusahaannya membuat lebih dari dua juta vinil setahun.

"Sebuah rekaman yang di-press dengan baik dari awal hingga akhir bisa menghasilkan sound yang jauh lebih baik ketimbang format digital karena format ini tidak dikompresi, sementara CD atau bahkan file dengan resolusi tinggi sekalipun (meski sedikit) selalu dikompresi," ujar Astor yang yakin tidak ada yang akan menandingi format vinil dan popularitasnya akan terus menanjak.

Menurut pecinta musik dan pemilik toko Tim Cretsinger, yang masih bertahan hingga kini dengan bisnisnya mengatakan peningkatan ini semacam cahaya untuk mereka yang bergantung pada (bisnis) ini. Tidak hanya penjualan vinil, tapi ketertarikan pelaku di dunia rekaman juga meningkat.

Meningkatnya popularitas vinil ini agaknya tidak terlepas dari usaha sekitar 700 toko musik independen yang bergabung untuk merayakan Record Store Day sejak 2008 lalu tiap Hari Sabtu ketiga di Bulan April. Acara ini menampilkan CD terbatas dan vinil yang hanya tersedia di toko-toko independen.

Hebatnya, vinil tidak hanya menarik bagi mereka yang pernah hidup di masa-sama jayanya beberapa dekade silam tapi juga generasi muda saat ini. Bagi mereka yang tidak mengalami masa rekaman seperti ini menganggap vinil sesuatu yang luar biasa dan menjadi koleksi menarik. Bagi salah satu pecinta vinil seperti Montgomery (25) ada perbedaan estetik dari segi sound dalam vinil dibandingkan dengan digital download.
