Release Note:

Adam Beyer and Dorian Paic have mixed the compilation for Cocoon's 2011 summer season in Ibiza.

In following with the theme of the weekly party series at Amnesia, the mix is called Cocoon Heroes, which the label says is not "a statement of self-adulation but rather a celebration of all Cocoon participants—whether they are behind the decks, the bar or, above all, on the dance floor." As with previous editions, each DJ gets a disc to himself. Beyer, who's booked to make one appearance at the party on June 25th, mostly sticks to his trademark style of streamlined techno, but adds a bit of a tech house twist with tracks by Tiger Stripes and Samuel Session. Paic, meanwhile, delivers a mix characteristic of his Raum... Musik imprint, packed with lean and punchy tracks by the likes of Sascha Dive, Daniel Bell and Guillaume & The Coutu Dumonts. He'll play for Cocoon twice this summer: first at the opening party on June 13th, then on the eighth of August.

The path to Pagliara's first full-length was by no means conventional. His avenue into house and techno began with dance theater choreography, which he studied formally in Milan. As he began spending time in Italian clubs, and especially after visiting Berghain's legendary predecessor, Ostgut, his interest in music and dancing ceased to be academic. He starting honing his DJing and production skills, and after moving to Berlin befriended Daniel Wang, who released his first 12-inch through Balihu. Since then Pagliara's tracks have appeared on Rush Hour, Meaksuma and finally Live at Robert Johnson, who put out his Toxic Love EP in 2009.

Focus For Infinity will be the first artist album on Live at Robert Johnson, a label best known for its mix series. It will be available digitally and on CD, with a shorter version (four fewer tracks) on vinyl.

Artist: Tom Vek
Title Of Album: Leisure Seizure
Label: Modular

Tracks: 12
Time: 47:24 min

04. We Do Nothing
05. World of Doubt
06. Seizemic
07. A.P.O.L.O.G.Y
08. Someone Loves You
09. Close Mic'ed
10. On A Plate
11. You Need to Work Your Heart Out
12. Too Bad

Release Note:

British songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Tom Vek popped up in the mid-2000s as part of a wave of clever, twitchy, studio-centric punk-funk acts following on the early success of the Rapture and DFA. He wasn't necessarily part of that scene, but he benefited from having a fashionable context, and so his debut album, We Have Sound, was a modest success. After that record, Vek essentially disappeared from the pop landscape as he went about setting up his own studio and gradually piecing together his second album, Leisure Seizure.

The answer is a resounding yes – largely because the erstwhile Thomas Timothy Vernon-Kell still has a thrillingly singular way with rhythm. He builds these 12 songs from the beats up, adding hooky, often heavy guitar riffs, bolstering with synths that alternate between stabbing and squiggling, and then decorating with everything from Mellotron to disco zaps to New Order-style basslines. Leisure Seizure is less grungy and more gutsy than Vek's garage-recorded debut, but the presence of Marina & The Diamonds collaborator Liam Howe – who co-produces alongside Vek and DJ Tom Rixton – hasn't resulted in a glossy pop record. Aside from the hymnal, ambient Close Mic'ed, which tips its cap ever so subtly in the direction of dubstep, Leisure Seizure is a bracingly noisy affair – as committed to clattering as a toddler who's just discovered mummy's saucepan cupboard.

Those scanning for clues into the record's lengthy gestation period are unlikely to be disappointed. As well as suggestions of romantic bitterness, Vek's cryptic lyrics contain teasing hints of loneliness, world-weary resignation and crippling inertia. "We do nothing with our time..." goes the chorus of one song. However, as potentially insightful as these sound bites might be, it's also important to note that Leisure Seizure sounds fresh and fully-realised rather than excessively fussed-over or borne out of frustration. Perhaps Vek wasn't being glib when he told the NME recently: "It's necessary to be mysterious about your operations when they're a mystery to you."

So while six years is still far too long to wait for any album not auteured by one Catherine Bush of Bexleyheath, there's more than enough here to satisfy aficionados of offbeat, fiercely inventive pop music – and who knows, maybe even the musical director of Gossip Girl?

9. Ether Drift (04:21)
10. Futureworld (03:10)

Release Note:

This July, American up-and-comer Seth Haley will release his first album as Com Truise, entitled Galactic Melt.

Haley describes his own sound as "mid-fi synth-wave, slow-motion funk," which just about sums it up. He hasn't released much as Com Truise so far, but he's still managed to pique the interest of some influential labels, including Ghostly International (who reissued his debut EP and are putting out his album) and Walt Disney Records, who tapped him for a remix on Tron: Legacy R3C0NF1GUR3D. Galactic Melt has a cinematic side too: Haley calls it a "sort of film score" for the life and times of his made up alter ego, Com Truise, "the world's first synthetic/robotic astronaut." Not a surprising theme, given the sci-fi feel of Haley's music.

In anticipation of the album, Ghostly are giving away the track "Polyhurt," which came out this week on Com Truise's Fairlight EP. You can also hear a cut from the album, "Cathode Girls," over on Pitchfork.

02 Dreaming
03 Leave My Head Alone Brain
04 Dudelange (live from Luxembourg)
05 See You Tomorrow
06 Kammermusik
07 Where Is The Edge
08 One One (live from Cologne)

Release Note:

Bugge Wesseltoft & Henrik Schwarz have completed their debut album, simply entitled Duo.

The two artists are a likely match. Wesseltoft started out as a jazz pianist on ECM, then moved on to collaborating with electronic luminaries like Laurent Garnier and Francois K. Schwarz, meanwhile, is an electronic artist whose love of jazz has long informed his productions and live performances. The pair have been playing together since 2009, with Wesseltoft on piano and Schwarz on laptop, but have never released any of their music until now.

Much like their live act, Duo is firmly rooted in improvisation. "We are creating music on the spot, both live and in the studio," Wesseltoft says. "With today's electronic tools you can really improvise, and Henrik is so clever with his stuff–he makes amazing music from scratch." The album features live recordings as well as studio productions, plus new interpretations of old songs by each artist (Wesseltoft's "Dreaming" and Schwarz's "Leave My Head Alone Brain").

"For me this Duo is like the first words in a long conversation," says Schwarz. "The improvisational aspect means freedom, and at the same time improvisation has been one of the greatest limitations and challenges in live electronic music for many years now. For me, this is a dream come true and a big next step."

Release Note:

Davide Squillace and Matthias Tanzmann will team up on a forthcoming mix CD, Circoloco @ DC10 Ibiza 2011 - The Next Level.

The pair have been playing regularly for Circoloco at DC10 in Ibiza since 2007. In that time they've built up something of an understanding behind the decks, with Italian producer Squillace coming at things from a more techno perspective, and German Moon Harbour boss Tanzmann taking more of a house-based approach. The dual DJ sessions have also extended beyond the walls of the infamous Ibiza club, with Circoloco events in London and Miami recently hosting such sets.

On Circoloco @ DC10 Ibiza 2011 - The Next Level the pair continue to straddle the line between techno and house, calling upon a mainly European pool of producers to supply the sounds. Squillace's name appears three times among the 14 proffered tracks, while Tanzmann puts in a single appearance via his collaboration with Dan Drastic on "Puddle Trouble."

Tanzmann's Moon Harbour label will put out this latest Circoloco compilation, following up on their release of the six-disc Circoloco @ DC10 - 10 Years Anniversary in 2008.

"There won't be any singing on the album, no music of tomorrow either, it feels generally more like... well, old times." The record will be his first body of new music since Berlin Calling, the 2008 album and feature film that greatly boosted his already high profile. The album comes out this June through Rough Trade and his own label, Paul Kalkbrenner Music. Release Note:

Icelandic electro-pop group FM Belfast has announced the US release of their sophomore album, Don't Want To Sleep on Morr Music. Out on June 21, the album follows their breakout debut, How To Make Friends, and is a perfect follow up to two years of making friends, taking in experiences, sounds, and adventure. One of MTV's "International Bands To Watch" at this year's SXSW '11, FM Belfast will return to the states for a national tour in the fall.

Known for their closing performances at Iceland Airwaves every year, FM Belfast have perfected the art of engaging audiences around the world, honing a music that is catchy, runs deep, and induces extreme euphoria in large crowds, or just in headphones. Lóa Hjálmtýsdóttir and Árni Rúnar Hlöðversson formed the band in late 2005 as a studio project, recording songs for friends as Christmas presents. Adding two more friends to the mix, Árni Vilhjálmsson and Örvar Þóreyjarson Smárason (múm), these four remain the core of FM Belfast, but will often draft their friends into the performance, with as many as 25 people ending up on stage.

Don't Want To Sleep was written and recorded by FM Belfast (guests include Retro Stefson's Unnsteinn Manúel, Borko's Borko and mighty trumpeter Eiríkur Orri Ólafsson). It retains the bouncy and joyful spirit of How To Make Friends, yet veers off into territories that the band have hitherto left unexplored. There are slow songs and introspective ones; calm, drifting meditations mixed with calls to arms and potential dancefloor workouts. And lots of fun, of course.

And making the release truly unique, the track selection features a series of exclusive releases, with many being subjected to the tried and tested Lawler re-editing process. This, explains Lawler, is an approach that will make the release a unique listening experience. In this day and age, a mix compilation needs to be special in some way, as DJ mixes are freely available all over the internet. So my plan was to have as many tracks as possible exclusive to this album, being released no-where else but here. That along with every single track being re-edited or re-arranged makes this in some ways more than just a mix compilation. I want my fans to get a mix of tracks that are unique to its own arrangement and composition, when you buy the tracks as singles people will get the original version of the track which in some cases may sound very different. Only with the version on this mix will they get my re-arranged versions – this is, and always has been, the tradition of my Lights Out albums.

Steve Lawler And with a tracklisting that features some of the finest established and upcoming producers, it is apparent that Steve has his finger on the pulse today, as much as he did with each of the preceding Lights Out mixes. A fantastically thought out and well rounded mix compilation from one of the scenes leading lights. So make sure you turn off the lights, and enjoy in the ambience in which its creator intended. Lights down and Light up.

Now in its 25th edition, Late Night Tales commissions eclectic mixes from artists of all stripes (The Flaming Lips, Four Tet, Lindstrøm and Jamiroquai to name just a few). Trentemøller seems especially well suited to the series: though his records are consistently dark and electronic, his DJ sets and remixes often hint at a more subtle and eclectic palette. Late Night Tales shows him indulging this lesser heard side of his sound, picking dirge-like selections by Black Angels, Low and Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, not to mention The Velvet Underground's S&M anthem, "Venus in Furs." As with all installments in the series, an exclusive cover is included as well: Trentemøller's interpretation of Chris Isaak's "Blue Hotel." The whole thing wraps up with a spoken word piece from music journalist Paul Morley.

Release Note:

After 10 years Surgeon AKA Anthony Child releases his 2nd album on his own imprint Dynamic Tension Records.

Quote by Surgeon "This album isnt about entertainment, it's about transformation, and transformation requires effort on behalf of the aspirant. My initial idea for this album project was to explore ideas of science fiction, but when I started the groundwork, it soon became obvious to me that my journey was one to inner rather than outer space. I studied the music of La Monte Young, Terry Riley, Eliane Radigue, and Alice Coltrane, all of whom made deeply spiritual, abstract music. I was searching for the deep spiritual essence that lay behind the surface structures of their individual music. This album is the closest I have been to reaching that point. It has nothing to do with nihilism or dystopia; it has a purely utopian aesthetic."

Release Note:

The next album by Osunlade is called Pyrography, and according to a press release, it will be the producer's final house effort.

Osunlade has always been an eccentric personality: an American expatriate living in Greece, and a devotee of the African tradition known as Ifá, who can often be seen with a long piece of bone jewellery through his nose. As a veteran DJ and producer, and the founder of Yoruba Records, his roots are in house music, though he's shown some very different sides to as style as well, most notably on his more songwriter-inspired album Rebirth from 2009. With Pyrography, he tries to bring these two elements of his sound together. "The whole idea for the album was to do something more electronic as well as include more 'songs'," he says. "Organic meets technology."

Pyrography is named after an ancient style of art, in which images are burned onto canvas using hot pokers or open flame.

Release Note:

Berlin-based artist PlanningToRock will release her next album, W, this May on DFA Records.

PlanningToRock is the guise of Janine Rostron, an English artist who plays an odd blend of experimental pop and chamber music. She's probably best known for 2010's Tomorrow, In a Year, the electronic opera she co-produced with Mt. Sims and The Knife. Much like her Swedish contemporaries, Rostron's music comes with a very theatrical stage presence, complete with costumes, video projections and sometimes a custom-made helmet.

W will be Rostron's first release on DFA, though she's been associated with the New York indie label since 2007, when James Murphy invited her to open for LCD Soundsystem on The Sound of Silver Tour. She produced the album over the last three years at her studio in Berlin, then mixed it in Sweden with Christoffer Berg, who also worked on Fever Ray's album. Pat Mahoney of LCD Soundsystem contributed some drumming.

08. En Amaryllis Jour 05:02
09. Leavalia Scheme 05:42
10. Monster 02:28
11. La Belle 06:25

Release Note:

After the Pruitt Igoe E.P, Kangding Ray better known as David Letellier, returns with his third album for raster-noton, pushing further his explorations on the edge of digital and analog sounds. With OR, Kangding Ray continues to blur the borders between experimental and bass music, and brings his signature sound to another level, somewhere at the darkest fringe of club culture.

With the massive metallic beats of « athem », the frightening distorded waves of « Mojave », the elevated groove of « Odd Sympathy », the modulated guitar walls of « Leavaila Scheme », or the low-bitrate Everest of « La Belle », KR creates deep atmospheres, loaded with echoes of collapsing economies, dysfunctional political systems, and corporate alienation.

In an abstract manner, OR depicts the desillusions of modern civilizations, while initiating a positive reflection on crisis as a creative state.

OR (« gold » in french), as the only chemical element that seems to keep its value for eternity, refers to the cult of endless consumption and the absurdity of fluctuating currency valuations, while in english, as a logical operator or grammatical conjunction, OR represents the possibility of another choice, an « inclusive disjunction » which suggests that there might be another answer, a different path to follow.

Noticeable inputs have been provided by Ben Frost, who composed a keyboard line for « Or », Rose Tizane Merrill who lend her voice to the anarchist poem « Monsters », and Magne Mostue who wrote the words and sang on « Coracoid Process » as well as the vocal version of the prophetic electronic mantra « Pruitt Igoe ».

Release Note:

Longtime production outfit Gus Gus will drop their seventh album, Arabian Horse, this Spring.

This will be the group's second long-player for venerated Cologne imprint Kompakt, following the gloomy electronica of 24/7 in 2009. For the recording of Arabian Horse, the trio of President Bongo, Biggi Veira and Daniel August reportedly constructed a studio in an isolated cottage in the middle of an Icelandic lava field. With initial recordings consisting solely of two Doepfer analog modular systems and August's vocals, the album nods to '90s dance pop acts like The Beloved.

Arabian Horse welcomes the return of vocalist Urður "Earth" Hákonardóttir to the Gus Gus fold, plus new personnel in the shape of Högni Elisson of the band Hjaltalin.

Release Note:

Music production is like analog photography - I'm always excited by the opportunities for creativity in experimentation, and I always prefer to create something unique rather than something perfectly produced through formulas and digital precision.

Adventures is like this - as represented by the album art, it's not clean and spotless... it is how I want it to sound but that doesn't mean that it's always perfect. The DIY aesthetic has always been fundamental to this project and by that definition, Adventures nearly sums up all that is Germany Germany. The past synth-pop, electro, ambient, etc. sounds have all been combined into 2 sides, 17 songs, 60 minutes.

I grew up listening to The Postal Service. Not since I was a child, but since the time when my music tastes stabilized (probably around 15) I've loved The Postal Service. It's no secret and I know that it shows in my music sometimes... I hope that rather than an Owl City-esque creative theft you see this as inspiration. I actually sent Jimmy Tamborello an e-mail a few weeks ago thanking him for all he's done as Dntel and The Postal Service... I've yet to receive a reply but I'm optimistic.

I hope that you enjoy this record. I've spent a long, long time on it and I hope that that shows. This is far from my full-time occupation but lately I find that it occupies most of my thoughts... though in the end this is just a hobby for me, and I like it that way.

It might be worth noting a few things...Transatlantic is all put together from samples of a short laptop-recorded guitar/vocal track that my friend Emily put together. Adventures II is sampled (almost exclusively) from tapping a wineglass and recording it on an iPhone. Take Your Time is the same, only with a full acoustic piano. A few of the samples at the end of Cold Hands are from Home, a track from one of my previous albums (the sampled vocals in Reflections are from Dreams That Pass).

10. D-Nox & Beckers – I Will Rise feat. MYGOD (Original Mix)

Release Note:

German duo D-Nox and Beckers have completed their next long player, Distance.

Having released on labels like Systematic, Baroque and Global Underground, the German duo this year caught the ear of Tronic boss Christian Smith, who invited them to mix the second edition of the label's Tronic Treatment compilation series. Now, the pair are readying their ten-track long player, which will feature a number of collaborations.

The album comes after many singles together, the first of which was 2005's You're A Star/ Jetlag Slave. This first release exemplifies the big room sound which the duo are now most well known for. Distance will mostly stay true to this identity, diverging at several points, covering, for example, filter house in "What I Have," a loungier sound with "Jacaranda" or darker techno with "Follow Me."

7. Mark E - Black Moon (08:12)
8. Mark E - Oranges (08:22)
9. Mark E - The Day (07:28)

Release Note:

The Birmingham based producer (real name Mark Evetts) rose to prominence through a string of highly sought after edits on labels such as the now defunct Jiscomusic, Golf Channel and Running Back, with tracks such as the slow bumping "R+B Drunkie" predating the current vogue for reworking obscure R&B tracks by some time.

Upon establishing his Merc imprint early last year, Evetts effectively signed off from the overstuffed edits game to focus on original productions. Subsequent releases for Running Back and Vibrations have proved to be auspicious, demonstrating Evetts was developing a unique grinding, almost industrial, house sound.

Stone Breaker promises to further showcase the sound that evolved on those productions, with the Spectral press machine suggesting the nine tracks ripple with a primal dark room house simplicity. The product of a finding a groove in the studio last year, the tracks came together almost by accident, too good to be relegated to a twelve inch release here and there.

Amidst a busy 2010 of remix commissions Evetts contributed two excellent remixes of Matthew Dear''s "Little People (Black City)" for Ghostly International which seemingly laid the ground for the producer electing to proceed with Spectral for Stone Breaker.

Whilst the vinyl version will only contain six of the nine tracks that make up the album across two slabs, Spectral are throwing in a free CD version with all tracks, making a purchase on lovely big wax almost a necessity.

Context isn't everything, but it's a lot. "Edits have had their day I think, let's try something new," Mark E told Join the Dots in March, and he's not kidding: Stone Breaker is the man called Evetts' full-on production debut, no samples to lean on or to suck you in with the shock of the differently familiar. It's a tall order for anyone, and while nothing on the album resonates like any random moment of last year's Works 2005-2009: Selected Tracks & Edits (first volume, anyway), when you peel away the obvious elements, Mark E's basic style is audible even in its new template.

What that mostly means are chopped loops whose roughness give them some tension to build on. The advantage of using extant recordings is that a voice or instrument might truncate at the end of a bar—there's a human element built in that takes on new shades of meaning when looped, and Mark E exploited that fully on an obvious potboiler like "You (Full Vocal Mix)" and the more robotic "RnB Drunkie," which switched up the vocal sample to bring the track to a head. Too often when constructing from scratch, Mark E ends up relying on a short musical line that neither builds on itself nor leads to much of anything further—and he doesn't do himself any favors by opening Stone Breaker with "Archway," which exemplifies those problems. "Black Country Saga," which follows, at least has a diverting icy-glassy keyboard hook.

Shifting focus between a rugged electric bass and a swelling/subsiding 303, "Belvide Beat" is the album's turning point. It's not quite fully out of the shadow of Mark E's disco-fueled earlier work—the bassline is similar to the beginning of Chic's "Dance, Dance, Dance"—but it moves sleekly and its progressions feel natural, and while not every track after is surefire, taken together they create an ever-more-lush arc. Even when a track's elements feel big or blocky, as on the ten-and-a-half minute "Got to Get Me There," a deliberate early Chicago house throwback (love that plodding keyboard bassline), Mark E throws in swelling pads to give it some shade. "Orange" is sneaky pretty, stamped equally by early British techno and the Detroit stuff that impacted it, and a kind of cooled-down climax before the flip-flopping vocal samples of "The Day" close it out. Stone Breaker sounds like what it is: a first step in a new direction, with a few interesting paths marked out in advance.

On his highly anticipated debut artist album, to be released on Joris Voorn and

genre-defying sound. Working with a number of gifted musicians and vocalists
(and even singing on a couple of tracks himself) he has taken a bold step,
joining the dots from filtered house to fragile electronic pop. In a time when
the LP has become a promotional tool rather than a form of expression, Objects
In A Mirror Are Closer Than They Appear stands out as a truly sincere and
compelling artist album.

Over the past two years, Pitto has invited an international cast of vocalists
and musicians into his studio. Annie Mackin (from London) lends her spoken word
to Childhood Storage and Childhood Storage Returns, wich are written by designer
Anna Nicole Ziesche (from London) Pianist Wout Smeets collaborates on Every
Second Of U. Lilian Hak (from Utrecht) sings over the spooky chords of Ceiling
in Paris. Leonie Muller (from Breda) features on Where My Soul Is Now and
Goodnight. Manu Delago (from London) plays the hang on the mesmerizing Mono
Desire. And Alice Rose (from Cologne) collaborates on When I Look At You, Devil
In Desire, Dont Come Any Closer and Happy Now.

Every single track has its own story to tell, but the full package offers a
greater narrative, spanning many different genres. Overall, Objects In A Mirror
is a very intimate and dynamic listening experience, taking you from ecstatic to
melancholy in the blink of an eye. When Pitto sings on Walking By The Sea, you
realize that heartfelt music is the only music that really matters.

Release Note:

Once again Vincenzo is entering the spotlight as he announces his third full length album on home label Dessous. Some 9 years after Welcome To Zanarkand, his last long-player, the Berlin based producer has been making magic in the studio, crafting what is sure to be his greatest work yet. Wherever I Lay My Head is a glorious journey through 13 tracks of rich, spiritual and stunningly crafted electronic sounds. Vincenzos cristal clear production and years of writing experience have culminated in this heroic new work. The album title reflects an aspect of Vincenzos personality that makes the widely travelled producer feel comfortable in foreign places.

He loves to travel, to meet new people, to experience new worlds and to absorb new inspirations, which is all incorporated into his music. We drift through the sublime tones of Hello feat. Lisa Shaw, whose vocals also feature later with Keep Moving. Lisa is based in Miami and came to Berlin for a week where she and Vincenzo laid down these two stunning tracks. A special note should also go to the albums second track, Tasmania which was produced on location in Hobart after a two day hike through the temperate hills. The album is a free flowing trip into completely entwirling musical zones. The mighty The Clearing, which has already proved its power on dancefloors and sun decks everywhere, sets the tone from here on in. Inspired by many, diverse music styles, Vincenzo set out to make an album that was less aimed at the dancefloor - a more timeless sound full of positivity and prosperity, ideal for home-listening. Glistening electro beats pierce through with the funky vocoded Calimero... Working with Brazilian artist Diogo Accioly of Talking Props, the pair cooked up Seduction, which glides over us like a cool mountain breeze.

Old school moments are re-visited in Weights & Measures, and Vincenzo explores deeper into
his US house roots with tracks like 106 Downtown, Where You Are or the amazing slow-grind of Sleepless (Brooklyn Mood). The classic vibes draw to a beautiful conclusion with Sometimes Saturday, a euphoric and harmonic breaks jam that really sums up the togetherness of the album. Through heartfelt melodic moments, vintage percussion and a heavy helping of musical skills, Wherever I Lay My Head is a pure and honest reflection on an exciting time in music, produced by one of its figureheads.
