Myagi Bio

Myagi aka Sole Claw aka Andrew Mavor has shot up like a rocket over the last year. Representing Canada internationally, he has played from Seoul to San Francisco, Halifax to Brighton, Taipei to Toronto, and has become touted as the next major North American breaks don. Comparisons to the other big names of the scene seem obvious, but don't really do justice to the range of work Myagi has put out, as his releases have varied from hip hop big beat infused party breaks through to jackin house and techy big room floor fillers.

Dropping a guitar in favor of a synthesizer well before finishing high school, Mavor's musical journey has landed him across the board support. The late John Peel (the Peel Sessions) used a Myagi track to open his show. Front 242 have sent kudos on a track ("Sole Claw - Smartbomb") that was licensed to Fingerlickin for the Plump DJ's album "Saturday Night Lotion."

The string of red hot releases that followed have landed him sets on the BBC, the CBC and Crystal Method's Community Service and support from everyone from Adam Freeland and Meat Katie through to Fatboy Slim and Freddy Fresh. Myagi's multi-genre approach to dance music has matured into a true journey through b-boy and rave culture, mashing up past and present in one of the most high energy, pounding experiences a club could play host to. His shows at clubs like The Guvernment in Toronto have led to high profile gigs internationally, including such highlights as Fabric in London, Fusion in Taiwan and San Francisco's Love Parade, where Myagi played three parties in 12 hours.

His upcoming releases include remixes for Ursula 1000 (coming out on Thievery Corporations label ESL), hip hop don Maestro (as in Fresh Wes), and a giant remix for Ricky Stone. He has two tracks licensed to JDS's "Beats N Bobs" compilation on Functional Breaks, more remixes in the works, and a release schedule that puts most labels to shame. Touring constantly, Myagi is one of the hardest working men in the North American dance music, and, with his profile rising at an extremely rapid pace he has quickly turned himself into a staple of the global breaks scene.

.:: Eclectica 4 "New Reality Trance" ::..

: Reviewed by Carey Jarvis

: trance :

Trance music has become one of the most popular genres of dance music recently, with DJs like Paul Oakenfold, DJ Tiesto and Paul Van Dyke taking it to the mainstream while making household names for themselves. Jeremy Dawson and Chad Petree of Cloud2Ground/Slyder recently had their single "Score" spun by Dave Ralph as his peak-time track in this years' love parade, while Paul Van Dyke regularly spins their stuff, as well. Redsavior has actually released a remix CD featuring 8 different remixes of his single "Searching for You" and Sweden's 19-year-old Jonathan Gremyr, aka Coretex, seems to be a name on everyone's lips...

Redsavior has actually released a remix CD featuring 8 different remixes of his single "Searching for You" and Sweden's 19-year-old Jonathan Gremyr, aka Coretex, seems to be a name on everyone's lips.

Trance being such a hot item, one might logically conclude that now would be a great time for a compilation showcasing some of the talented artists that have erupted onto the scene. Eclectica 4 does just that by serving up some great Underground Trance.

The album, although largely instrumental with a few samples here and there, gives you a real sense of devotion all the way through. "Yah-Weh" by Greg Hobgood of The Prodigal Sons is a perfect example of this! The music thunders as high keys and emotional riffs abound, while the beat thumps, blending into the song perfectly.

Son of Dust hits you with "The Resurrection" which has a really cool sample that sounds like it was snagged from an old movie, "I am the Resurrection and the Life. He that believeth in me shall never die." The song is Trance, but also really has a Progressive House feel to it, with a bit of a hard vibe that I really like!

Coretex contributes his track "Lay Your Wings Around Me" that first appeared on the January issue of the Tastyfresh CD Pool. This version is a completely different mix, but still has the famous "Love your enemies, forgive those who use you" sample.

"Searching For You" by Redsavior is possibly the most anticipated track on the album, as David Richardson did a fantastic job of promoting his contribution, as well as designing one of the coolest covers I have ever seen for this album! It has a real Sci-Fi feel and is sleek and colorful. This track has a very hard, deep bass thump with a bit of Tribal influence. It has a nice contrast of hard and soft... I have seen it show up on several DJ play lists already.

"Weight" by Antidote has a hard grind, with some Techno influence here and there. The female vocal sample and spacey soundscape keep it on the Trance tip, though, and it ends with a spooky vibe.

"Activation (Fulfilled Mix)" by Systematic has nice build that gradually brings you up to a full speed jam. The sample, "Get Ready" adds to the anticipation in key spots, making the switchups and breakdowns even more enjoyable.

Prophetica contributes a truly beautiful piece of Uplifting Trance with "What is Hope", a track that makes you feel good right down to your shoes. The male vocal sample says, "What is Hope? Hope is inexpressibly beautiful." The music is epic!

"Theophony" is a Progressive Trance track by Eternalist that sounds like it might have been included on The Devout Artists Compilation. It has a really smooth groove that makes you feel as if you are floating along with the music.

Revurb also hits you with a Progressive Trance "choon" that moves you, called "Stronger Than Before". It contains ethereal-sounding breakdowns, but when the beat comes back in, it is a very fast moving track that can move the floor.

"XaltR" is a nice surprise from Skywryter who seems to have just surfaced in the scene this year. It has a nice throbbing vibe to it, reminiscent of Underground Progressive House and is layered with really nice Trancey riffs and a beautiful melody.

"Clear Orbit (Live)" by Analogue Prophets is one of my favorite tracks off this project. Matthew Buri amazes me with his wizardry of electronics and completely blew us all away here in Michigan. He did a fantastic job of playing the role of producer and putting this whole album together. His Progressive Trance track shows you he is one of the best out there and the high pitched tapestry sticks in your head for days.

This project is of the highest caliber, and definitely gets a stamp of excellence. Get your copy now, if you like Trance you'll love it, and if you don't it might be the album to change your mind!

anyway, cuman sebagai food for thought ya.
coba deh di pikirin. I know kalo memang the top 4 djs tahun ini adalah dj trance semua. Does that make them the best dj?  I don't think so. Menurut gw , the best dj is the one that is not restricted to just 1 style of music. Jadi justru menurut gw, keren banget kalo dj bisa maenin berbagai genre dalam 1 set. After all, djs are there to entertain people right? Salah satu perfect example adalah Derrick May. There's a reason why they call him the godfather of dance music. Waktu dia maen di Bali, gw kebetulan memang berdiri paling depan throughout his whole set. Jadinya gw bisa liat platt apa aja yang dia maenin.  Dalam set dia lo bisa dengerin mulai dari garage house, detroit techno, filter house, hard techno, progressive, breaks, hip house and more. Alhasil, it was probably one of the highlight set of the year. Sayangnya memang agak sepi. Tapi itu example dari what a good dj is. Sama dengan waktu Stacey Pullen maen. Same kind of set. Michel De Hey ga se variatif itu, tetapi meskipun dia notabene adalah dj techno, dia maenin semua sound dari techno, tech house, prog, electro and breaks. Green Velvet juga keren banget krn dia yang maennya memang ngalor ngidul tanpa mengikuti satu jenis musik, tetapi jadinya, sangat entertaining.

Tapi bottom linenya adalah... kalo ada dj disini,  don't get tunnel vision dimana hanya terpaku dengan satu jenis music. after all, good music is good music regardless of the genre. And for aspiring producers, one piece of advice that I got from Derrick May is that as a musician you should open your ear for other music because there are so many people out there with fresh ideas. You might missed it if you're stick in one litle box that you created yourself.

ok setujuuuuu  ;)

Tough act to follow I thought given the history of the mix series.

Obviously Sasha and Digweed's stands alone and Digweed's own mix I thought personally was the best of the lot. Seaman's Own mixing in Part 4 though was outstanding.

Part 7 was for me a great effort, although other than Seaman's Melbourne on Global Underground I've never been disapointed by his mixes.

CD1 was his usual style of slowly building progressive trance building up to some rip the roof off pumping trance/deep house. Ideal for driving in the car with the stereo turned up to max. Very reminisant of his Buenos Aires GU, but with a more modern sound, although capturing the classic Renaissance feel and sound.

CD2 - Seemed to be a bit of a homage to the current trendy electro sound. Gone are the longer epic tunes and replaced with a more edgy house feel. Still progressive/deep house in nature, but some of the rifts are a little more techy/electro although Dave Seaman in set style the end of the CD lacks the real energy and emotion of CD1. The interview in the sleeve notes indicated Seaman's own preference to CD1. If this change in sound was to keep in line with current taste, for me its a bit of a cop out.

FYI,
ELECTRONIC DANCE MUSIC AWARD? HARUSNYA MEMENUHI KATEGORI MASING2 DJ DAN ARTIS YANG BERHUBUNGAN, JANGAN DIJADIKAN AJANG EVENT DOANG DAN KEPENTINGAN MASING2 CLUB, DJ DAN EO.

COBA SADAR APA YANG TELAH KALIAN RAIH?

CONTOH HAL PENILAIAN YANG SANGAT SENSITIF:

1. DJ OF THE YEAR? YANG MENILAI SIAPA? DARI APA? PDJI TIDAK IKUT SERTA?

2. ALBUM OF THE YEAR? DI NILAI DARI PENJUALAN? APA UDAH SEMUA ARTIS DI IKUT SERTAKAN MAUPUN DI UNDANG? RECORDS LABEL? HASIL PENJUALAN BERAPA?

3. DJ HOUSE? TRANCE? ELECTRO? KENAPA SAYA LIHAT NAMANYA ITU2 AJA?

MARILAH HAI KITA BANGSA YANG BERADAB DAN PINTAR, PIKIRKANLAN APA YANG SEHARUSNYA DI BUAT DAN DI KEMBANGKAN DENGAN CARA MENDIDIK!

BANYAK DJ2/MUSISI ELECTRONIC YANG TIDAK TAHU DAN TIDAK DI UNDANG, BUKAN KARENA SAYA IRI (MUNGKIN MEMANG TIDAK MASUK HITUNGAN DAN BANYAK YANG MENYADARINYA!)

DJ AWARD ATAU ELECTRONIC MUSIC AWARD?

INGAT....
