Quality: 190kbps 44100kHz Joint Stereo
Tracks: 13

10 Don't Touch This 4:07
11 Time To Leave 4:48
12 Me Against The Bitch 0:57
13 The Train 3:29

Release Note:

As a linchpin of Diynamic Music, Stimming is known for his upbeat and often club-ready style of tech house. But Liqourice shows a different side of the producer; hardly any of the tracks ride a 4/4 beat, and most of them rely heavily on field recordings, giving the album an experimental feel. "I kind of sneaked around the normal bassdrum/clap or snare combination," he says. "I only tried to express the feelings I had during this time... without thinking of what will happen with it or who's gonna buy it."

The mood, too, is more somber than usual, a change Stimming attributes to the personal crisis during which he produced much of the album. "I had to sleep on the couch in my 16 square metre studio, certain circumstances didn't allow me to sleep at home." Though he didn't go into further detail on the matter, the song title "Me Against the Bitch" speaks volumes.

As for the album title, Stimming says its an acknowledgment of the fact that the record isn't for everyone. "I called it Liquorice because I simply love real liquorice sweets (all kinds actually), and I have realised that it's something someone loves or hates. There's not much middle ground, and there were probably 50% who like it and the others don't."

13. Still Here 04:33
14. Al Viento 02:35
15. Como no fuimos 07:32

Release Note:

Since he made his recording debut back in 2007, Guti's wasted little time in building an international profile for himself. Hailing from Argentina, he started out on the Buenos Aires label Unlock Recordings, and within a few years had landed releases on Wolf + Lamb, Crosstown Rebels and most recently Supplemental Facts, not to mention Desolat, who gave Guti one of his first big breaks by releasing his Las Cosas Que No Se Tocan EP. Musically, Guti wears his jazz and blues influences on his sleeve, which makes him a perfect fit for the organic tech house label.

Patio de Juegos features all new productions from Guti, plus collaborations with Guy Gerber, Grünbox, Ryan Crosson and Anthea Marie Nzekwu (or Anthea, as she's commonly known). Grammy nominated tango artist Daniel Melingo also makes an appearance. The album will be released on CD, with a shorter version available on double-vinyl.

Release Note:

Class B Band is project made up of Bea Tricks and Beatmaster G. The former is a DJ who plays most often as one half of Dollz at Play; the latter is beatboxer and MC who's collaborated with the likes of Wally Lopez and performed onstage with Danny Tenaglia. Though the sleeve only named Bea Tricks, the pair first appeared together last year with the Bea at Risk EP. Much like that record, Movie T was recorded in the mountains of Ibiza, and will see release on esteemed Canadian imprint Wagon Repair. The sound of the record is club-ready but also tongue-in-cheek, with Beatmaster's vocals lending a bit of playful swagger to the acid and electro-tinged beats.

Release Note:

London dubstep duo Kryptic Minds will release their second album, Can't Sleep, through Black Box this April.

Simon Shreeve and Brett Bigden (aka Leon Switch) moved on from drum & bass to a more dubstep-oriented sound back in 2009, with prominent support from scene leader Loefah, who made their debut album the first release on his label, Swamp 81. Entitled One Of Us, that record blended halfstep beats with dubbed out atmospheres and field recordings. Their follow-up comes two years later on the emerging Black Box label, and is said to maintain the icy, minimalist feel of their debut, while also looking to a "future beyond dubstep" (a press release hints at Portishead, junglist and Detroit techno influences). The album will be preceded by a twelve-inch single for the title track on March 7, backed with a remix from London-via-Berlin producer Emika. Can't Sleep will be available as a triple-vinyl pack as well as digitally and on CD.

09. Final Frenzy (03:17)
10. Wasteland (04:30)
11. Fever (06:29)

Release Note:

Dutch bass artist David Huismans release his next album as 2562, entitled Fever, this April through his own label, When In Doubt.

Every now and then, Huismans will use self-imposed restrictions to get his creative juices flowing. For instance, on Shortcuts, his 2008 album as A Made Up Sound, he chose to devote only one night to each track, as a way to find out if he could "use compulsion in a positive way." Fever was produced under a similar guideline: all of the sounds are sourced from disco records released in the late '70s and early '80s (hence the title). The album will be Huisman's fourth to date, and his third as 2562, a guise he tends to use for more dubstep-oriented material. It will be the second release yet on his recently established label, When In Doubt, after Aquatic Family Affair / This Is Hardcore, which came out on 10-inch this week.

Geskia is undoubtedly the master of Japanese underground hip-hop and breakbeats. He started off his journey of sound making in 2001, and became a part of the down-beat unit "coma5". Although Geskia's music style is heavily influenced by industrial music (especially by Industrial icons like Coil and Einstürzende Neubauten), trip-hop movement and techno music, but by listening to the unique music that he has been creating, one can indubitably tell that Geskia has already established his very own distinctive music style and philosophy, and it has begun to mesmerize many people, including his fellow artists.

Release Note:

The Melbourne-based five-piece have been recording together since the early '00s, releasing several singles and EPs via local imprints before dropping their debut album Fingers Crossed on Trifekta back in in 2003, and In Case We Die two years later. The group's sound has stayed fairly consistent throughout the time they've spent together, remaining deeply entrenched in minimalist synth-pop and indie rock, complete with lead vocals from frontwoman Kellie Sutherland.

Architecture in Helsinki's new full length, entitled Moment Bends, was recorded over the past two years in the band's own studio and according to band leader Cameron Bird it reflects AIH's obsession with pop music and their desire to get lost in an album that encapsulates all their feelings and emotions. Moment Blends will be the band's first LP on Australian imprint Modular Recordings.

Release Note:

Roll up!  Roll up! The ever innovative Beardyman releases his debut after holding back for some time now. Beat boxer, technician, producer and comedian, Beardyman has rocked the world's festivals and has pretty much built himself up as the most talented and diverse beat boxer on earth. Hell – even his Essential Mix on Radio One was a two hour special constructed by mouth-play magic.

It comes as no surprise that his debut arrives now, as Beardyman has made a long and busy transition between performing artist, to recording artist. It's surely true that a man that can literally spit the sound of a thrash metal guitar or bass drenched kick drum obviously harbours deeply intelligent and versatile thought patterns –and as a result, the skill is of an unbelievably high quality and equally as humorous and colourful in its delivery.

From the neo-calypso of 'Twist Yer Ankle' to 'Vampire Skank's Eastern European melodies before a lead-heavy bassline of the dubstep variety wades in; single 'WhereDoes Your Mind Go' touts its eighties dark-electro, New Order feel, adding another trick to the magicians box. With twenty tracks to choose from, the listener will feel spoilt for choice as they marvel at his joyous antics.

We're even given the opportunity to hear Beardy's rap abilities as he clearly pays homage to Q Tip on 'Smell The Vibe', with piano laced, jazz inspired funk beats, low slung bass and an almost identical impersonation of the Tribe Called Quest front-man. Other highlights include the murkage of the hilarious 'I'm Gonna Be Sick', its reggae sample style chorus singing the title name (hilarious) before switching at the breakdown to Dizzee Rascal flavour grime bars. Elsewhere, the whiplash drum and bass breakcore of 'Game Over (Latex Quim)'is completed with digitized Pacman noises, changes in tempo and breakneck shifts in rhythm that sound like a spoof version of Squarepusher live.

It quickly becomes apparent that Beardyman invested a lot of time and effort into this album, emulating his live spectacle onto a boundary pushing artist album. And it's certainly going to be an impossible challenge to jump above this bar – Beardyman has shown that he has every angle covered with his miraculous skill. An amazing artist album that's worthy of everyone's attention, witness it yourself on the Where Are You Taking Me? Tour (17th Feb – 12th March 2011) where he'll freestyle, anything, on request of a live audience. What next for beat boxing after such a prodigious talent releases a masterpiece like this?

11. Stanton Warriors & E-Boi – Precinct [03:56]
12. Stanton Warriors & Ruby Goe – Out Of My Head [03:03]

Release Note:

Messrs Mark Yardley and Dominic B have come a long way since the early half of the Noughties. Regular mainstays at Fabric with bristling shows packed full of tough, beaten goodness, they regularly  found themselves taking  over Room 3 and wiping the floor - album sales wise - with the Stanton Sessions Vol .1 , followed by the not so well received Vol 2. You literally couldn't speak of electro-hip-hop-breaks without name-checking them for almost a decade.

But that was then and this is now. And surprisingly, one of the most popular Dj duo's in the UK are only managing to release their debut artist album today, a move that shows that the ethos and structure of the breakbeat as a musical tool can be applied to all forms of music, instead of joining the ranks of producers watching helplessly as the breaks-laced-boat gently sails away. Instead of holding a flaking, dog eared piece of music, what one uncovers on receipt of this album is a surprising mish-mash of sounds, all produced and mastered to a level so high that you can't help but take notice.

Perhaps not the most imaginatively titled album in the world, 'The Warrior's' thankfully doesn't stagnate as it unleashes a wealth of musicality and diversity. The solid break smashers are there in the form of opener  'Get Up' featuring the sassy, Sant-e-gold-esque vocals of Ruby Goe, backed by thick and pulsing bass stabs that add to its enormous feel and driving tempo. Elsewhere 'Bushido' offers electro tinged dubstep beats to the fold, demonstrating that the Stanton's have been doing their homework like excited and eager schoolboys, keying straight into a sound that's recently dominated the world by force. And speaking of HUGE dubstep, the seismic, sub destroying distortion of recent single cut 'Turn Me Up Some' continues to send shockwaves through the listener, and definitely not a tune that your dear ol' mom will enjoy.

Superstar featuring E-Boi sports some old school percussive hardcore beats, with added growling bass might and radio friendly raps, while Take Me To Your Leader intertwines the classic electro-breaks template with some distorted 'Doctor Who' samples.

For a lot of people, the whole two-step revival, minimal-techno leanings and unstoppable rise of bro step may mean that this 12 track album isn't necessarily high on the agenda. But if you're looking for an album that sounds magnificent in its defiance, eclecticism and production values, then this album is well worth a listen. If you want to let your serious hair down and have fun, then it's also the perfect party starting album that's set to map many a debauched night out. Now, really...what more do you want?

Danny Howells has some pretty high profile labels in his past, from the nights he spent DJing for Bedrock to the mixes he did for Renaissance and Global Underground. But in the past few years much of his time has gone into his own imprint, Dig Deeper Records. So far the label has focused exclusively on his own productions, but soon it will host tracks from artists like Art Bleek, Surrealism and fellow heavyweights like Nick Warren. Phase One showcases a wide swath of material from the label—a whopping 43 tracks in total, most of which are previously unreleased.

"This is the first time I've ever had the chance to sign new music, and be able to combine it with my own productions," says Howells. "So many artists that I really admire and look up to sent me music for the label which was kind of gob-smacking! I'm so happy with the end result and feel that the mix and individual tracks really display the diverse range of musical styles that I want Dig Deeper to represent."

The release consists of two parts: an 18-track mix, and a collection of 25 individual songs. The mix will be available as a limited edition CD, signed by Howells himself, and also as a digital download.

Release Note:

Gold Panda's "Companion" comes in quick succession following the February 28th release of the "Marriage EP," which featured remixes by Star Slinger, Baths, Forest Swords and Halls.  "Companion" exists in the same sonic continuum as "Marriage," but with odd twists here and there to keep things unexpected.

In "Quitters Raga," for instance, Gold Panda incorporates Indian Raga music into jittery and percussive electronics.  There are echoes of Four Tet here hidden in the details, but whereas some of Four Tet's songs tempt boredom, Gold Panda does not (yet).

"5th Avenue" slows the tempo as Gold Panda dusts the recording with tape static, giving the digital electronic instrumentation some aged, found-sound quality.  At 3:16, he unleashes gentle waves of static, which surround the beat until melodies return slowly, as if they were being pulled back from the abyss, folded backward from erasure.

Gold Panda, as a true child of the 80′s, titles his next track "Like Totally," which contains a beautiful drone and two-note arpeggio, which are then joined mid-way through by synth tones, abstract sounds, disembodied voices and found-sound from either a movie or recording.

And if things are mellow for a track or two, one must up the beat count, which Gold Panda does with "Back Home."  It is here where Gold Panda demonstrates his ability to let things develop temporally: the song is almost crushed under the weight of its own repetition, until he fills in the spaces with more and more sounds, not to create a cacophony or crescendo, but to only partially fill voids, creating micro-voids in the sonic field.

"Mayuri" is an album highlight from the character of the beats straight on to the shades of melody deployed.  The first 50 seconds or so is filled with melodic and percussive sublimity in a shoegaze style, before shifting into something vaguely Japanese.  Gold Panda then drops some heavy bass and repetitive synth patches, until disintegrating the beat at 2:08, only to build it back up as if the constituent melodic notes are cloned and aurally out-of-focus.

Some tracks are mere curiosities, and that seems to be the case with "Long Vacation"—that is, until Gold Panda adds little sonic flourishes here and there, just as an engineer might build and build until there is a concept of a whole.  "Lonely Owl" is a plaintive break in the proceedings, a lullaby of sorts, with static and what sound like Eastern stringed instruments.  Gold Panda then inserts a break beat, but doesn't stray at all from the song's established atmosphere.

"I Suppose I Should Say 'Thanks' or Some Shit" is Gold Panda falling into the Four Tet trap of masturbatory sampling and collage, and yet, somehow, it's endearing.  One could argue that Gold Panda has now lost his focus, though, which continues on the perfectly forgettable song "Heaps."  The ennue continues on "Bad Day Bad Loop."  Bad song.  Okay, it's not a bad song, but it's not great either.  It's fair to middling, to borrow the phrase from Samuel Beckett.  The same goes for "Triangle Cloud," which—while pleasant enough—exists in the in-between world linking Aphex Twin and Boards of Canada, but without the genius of either artists.

Then, as if he knew we would come to such conclusions, Gold Panda pulls out his inner Richard D. James on "Win-San Western," with skittery, chaotic (but mathematically-controlled) beats underneath Western film instrumentation, which is then lost in an ambient haze.  Truly, one never would have thought that Warped musical tropes could go so well with Ennio Morricone's Spaghetti Western work. Gold Panda bookends his album with "Police," which is frenetic in the way of Japanese arcades, and really no way to end the album.

One begins to assume a sort of strange logic to "Companion."  That Gold Panda has an affinity for Japan and that he delights in pulling songs out of clouds of static—pulling them out of a hat like a magician.

A day after the tron 'r3configur3d' remix album leaked has come some heavy criticism from not only bloggers and online types but even ed bangers bossman Busy P stating:

Dear Disney people,
You know i love you (we all do). But Walt! Come on! How can you take my robots friends so far away from good taste? I am 100% sure the Daft boys were not involved in this side (sad) project.
Of course some of it is nice, and you know there are some of my friends on this CD. But this is not enough!
A masterpiece like TRON soundtrack deserved the best and I am sad to discover the A&R at Disney records is apparently buying most of his electronic music in airports stores...
Luckily I found an exciting UNRELEASED (or even better, REJECTED!) remix from our Belgium cousins GOOSE. This should have been the kind of great re-interpretation of Daft Punk's music featured on this compilation. This remix is now yours my friends, enjoy!

Release Note:

Metronomy release their third album, 'The English Riviera' on April 11th through Because Music. The follow up to 2008's critically acclaimed 'Nights Out', 'The English Riviera' is a sonic progression of epic proportions and affirms Metronomy front man and producer, Joseph Mount, as a rare British talent. Since 'Nights Out', the band have swollen to a four piece with new members Anna Prior on drums, Gbenga Adelekan on bass, original member Oscar Cash on keys/sax, and Joe himself on vocals, keys and guitar. This expansion of personnel is reflective of a new record that is mapped by vast soundscapes, incredible depth and warmth, and big pop hooks.

Part love letter to the area of Devon coast Mount grew up in and part concept album about his own semi-fictionalised vision of "The English Riviera", the tone for the album is set by the opening sounds of seagulls, distant waves and a Music Hall string quartet. However, any notion of whimsy is swiftly dispelled, as the seismic bass line of 'We Broke Free' shudders and ushers in waves of layered guitars and synths.

Having produced and remixed everyone from Roots Manuva to Kate Nash and the forthcoming album from Nicola Roberts, this is the first Metronomy album that Mount has taken out of his bedroom and recorded in a proper studio. The results are telling.

Characterised throughout with a sense of warmth and richness, 'The English Riviera' is in parts reminiscent of seminal 1970s West Coast studio albums from the likes of Fleetwood Mac and The Eagles, but due to Mount's studio wizardry, the record sounds vibrant and entirely of its time.

RA Review:

Thank God for Sundays—literally. It's impossible to say if the day of rest, comedowns, hangovers, after-parties and aftermaths would have existed without the Book of Genesis first identifying it as the Lord's own chill-out time. Martin Dawson's debut for Sasse's label, Sunday Smoking partakes in the weekly ritual of indolence with a brew of warm, carefree tunes that reek of daytime parties but also omelettes and Bloody Marys. Call it brunch house.

Throughout the LP Dawson culls heavily from the deep house playbook, using a number of tried and true motifs, like jazzy keys, sliced-and-diced soul vocals, conga loops and distinctly house-y drum kits, but always with a care and sophistication that betrays the decade or so of music-making under his belt. Sunday Smoking is a reminder that the quality of a meal is not necessarily always dependent on the novelty of the recipe, and that skills of the chef are as crucial in the kitchen as the quality of the ingredients.

Taken individually the LP's most effective cuts tend to be the uptempo numbers like "The Return," which momentarily shrug off some of the more obvious genre signifiers—too many midtempo Rhodes riffs in a row can begin to feel a bit airless, and a good surging filter or two can act like a much-needed dose of fresh air. With its big drums, the nimbly propulsive "Morning Glory" is likewise an attention-getter—here Dawson works up a full head of steam with a dense mixture of rhythm patterns that manage to sound busy without becoming cluttered. It's a particularly athletic workout on what is largely a relaxing affair, enjoyable whether your ass is on the floor or nestled in an overstuffed couch.

One of the standout mellow tunes is the opening "Blissful Ignorance," whose bouncing, cut-up electric piano riff, is a strong mood-setter. The neat segue into "Chariot" underscores the LP's strong sense of cohesiveness—it's less about the personalities of single tracks than the feeling of a ten-track sculpted whole, something you're likely to experience if you're smoking on a Sunday and time seems to slip away from you.
