Tinnitus

Tinnitus pronounced "ti naitas" or "tinitas" is essentially hearing loss that can effect people at any age and at any time, so be careful.

Hearing loss and Musicians

Now as a bass player or even a musician in general you should consider wearing ear plugs to protect your ears from the loud noises of gigging and even practicing because if you don't in later life or even soon you may develop tinnitus. If you wish to have a music career or have a music based life style it is essential that you understand the effect of hearing loss and what effect this has on musicians.

What is tinnitus?

Tinnitus is a ringing in the ear that will never go away, it can be perceived in one or both ears, or even inside the head. Tinnitus can just start at any given time and when it does you are stuck with it for life, it gets louder as you keep getting exposed to loud noises over time. With other 50 million people in the USA having the symptom it is more popular than people realise. Although it is common to hear ringing some people hear other things such as; hissing, roaring, clicking, whistling and buzzing.

What are the causes?

Although tinnitus has several causes from nose allergies to ear infections, to stress to even the side effects of taking too much aspirin the main cause is exposure to loud noises, e.g. going to watch live bands play and even listening to your headphone too loud can add to hearing loss and being a musician you are more vulnerable than other people. Scientists believe that the cause of tinnitus due to exposure to loud noises could be located in the inner ear. The inner ear contains thousands of minute hairs called cilia that pick up vibrations and turn them into sounds that you can hear. Tinnitus is caused by some of these hairs getting damaged by laying flat or getting bend, this causes them not functioning properly. Once these hairs get damaged they can not be undone nor will they grow back.

Understanding dB

Noises are measured in loudness by something called dB (pronounced decibels), as the volume of noise increase so does the dB they are measured in. Damage to your ears can be done by simply listening to sounds at 85 dB for long periods of time, serious damage can be done listening to sounds at 120 dB. At 120 dB your ears can only take several minutes at this level before taking permanent damage and with music players being able to reach this level and rock concerts being able to exceed this level and reach as high as 130 dB it's so easy to gain permanent hearing loss. Your bass and the band you play in can also reach these levels at practice so precaution needs to be taken.

Treatment

There are many treatments out there that can help reduce the volume of the tinnitus you have but none of them can remove it completely. Treatments include; cleaning the wax out of the ear canal, having sound therapy, taking medication, surgery, etc There are also things that can be done to help keep your mind of the sound, one of them is to have a clock next to your bed when you are sleeping and the ticking of the clock will keep your mind of the ringing in your ear. Also there are special ear plugs that emit white noise that can cancel the noise out you hear, or play other noises like the sounds of the ocean.

Protection

Ear plugs can be considered not cool but no matter what people may say they can save you from a lifetime of annoyance and misery which no coolness can do. With protecting your ears it's not about being cool or not, it's about been smart and knowing that your hearing comes first.

There are two types of ear plugs;

One type just blocks every frequency out a lot so your ears don't get damaged at all. These are considered the most effective and are used the most and also cheap in price. They can distort the sound however and every frequency gets blocked out at different levels. These can be bought at your local pharmacy, music shop or even online.

The other type are called musician ear plugs and these just reduce the frequencies by about 20 dB, these type of ear plugs will only help you with stand the high levels for longer, they don't protect your ears fully. They make frequencies all the same level so you can hear everything as normal just at a lower level. The frequency of conversation is hardly affected. These ear plugs are also dearer in price and a little harder to get hold on. You could ask you local music shop but the best place to find them is online.
Summary

Overall to prevent the cause of tinnitus from loud noises just wear ear plugs, they are very cheap and effective and for the sake of a few £ then can save you a life time of annoyance. Ear plugs can be bought at your local pharmacy or through Amazon, use the right links..
