Release Note:

The queen of Berlin's sixth studio album, a collaboration with Tobias Freund, met with reviews that were universally solid in acknowledging a shift in trajectory from productions previous, generates a remix package to presumably shake off any enduring crumbs of unfamiliarity. Ambient techno is spread across dance floor hallucination and the solace of downtime, Allien popping in and out and more ethereal as ever as recurring specter of inspection.

Adultnapper installs a Hall & Oates bassline for the gentle washes of the conspicuous cabaret original of "Huibuh," leading into powerful tides of comfort. Tim Hecker, with beat-less texturing, kicks up a storm in slow motion as the compilation starts to take deeper breaths. Nicolas Jaar does his customarily ponderous disco suspension, ahead of other options occupying themselves somewhere between a soft and an empty place.

For as little rebellion the compilation possesses, the resistors of the pack that come through with a modicum of ruggedness are in truth understanding Allien's readily available jerkiness and resolve, as if everyone has adopted her as an enigmatic muse. While Aux 88 (literally) hit nails on heads, Camea's funky techno and Munk's punk-funk flirt with committing the cardinal sin of moving in the opposite direction when it comes to Allien's degrees below temperature.

Release Note:

The CD caps off a breakthrough year for the Boston duo, during which they put out an armful of 12-inches and notched up dozens of tour dates around the world, including sets in Tokyo, Ibiza and Bar 25's final bash ever. Social Experiment 002 shows their mixing style continuing to evolve, with 24 tunes packed into an hour and 15 minutes. Many of the pair's closest friends make it into the mix, including Gadi Mizrahi of Wolf + Lamb and fellow Bostonians Sergio Santos and Tanner Ross. Art Department, Deniz Kurtel and Benoit & Sergio all contribute previously unreleased tracks, as do Soul Clap themselves. Staying true to form, the CD's overarching style is modern house with a disco sheen.

The compilation will see release on No.19 Music, a Toronto-based imprint run by Art Department member Jonny White. According to a press release, it will be followed by an unmixed album featuring some of the exclusive tracks.

Art Department have unveiled details for their debut album, The Drawing Board.

Given the soaring popularity of last year's "Without You," you'd think Jonny White and Kenny Glasgow had been at it together for years. In fact, though both artists have long been active in Toronto's club scene, that 12-inch was the first (and is still the only) record in the duo's catalog. Much like that massive single, their debut album is all about sinister but sexy vocal house, often with Glasgow's own deep croon. The Drawing Board also features a few guest appearances: Seth Troxler delivers vocals on a new track called "Living the Life" as well as the already released "Vampire Nightclub," and Osunlade joins Boston duo Soul Clap on "We Call Love."

The album will come out on CD through Crosstown Rebels at the end of April. A month ahead of its release, Art Department will debut their new live act during the Get Lost party at Electric Pickle in Miami.

Critically acclaimed electronic duo The Chemical Brothers have teamed up with film director Joe Wright to score Wright's boldly original adventure thriller Hanna, which stars Academy Award nominee Saoirse Ronan, Eric Bana, and Academy Award winner Cate Blanchett. The soundtrack will be released exclusively through iTunes on March 15th, in advance of the film's April 8th nationwide theatrical release through Focus Features.

From the haunting "Hanna's Theme," written for the 16-year-old title character, to the carnival-esque track "The Devil Is In the Details" and the tension-filled "Container Park," The Chemical Brothers deliver 20 tracks that mirror the ever-changing moods and environments that Hanna (played by Ronan) experiences in her dangerous journey as she is pursued across Europe. Of the original score, Moviefone raves "Trust us when we say they deliver something really special with this one, topping (in our opinion) the much-buzzed-about Daft Punk TRON: Legacy score... as well as Trent Reznor's [Oscar-winning] score for The Social Network. Oh yes, we just went there."

The soundtrack will be available on Back Lot Music, Universal Studios' in-house soundtrack record label. Formed in 2008, Back Lot releases select scores from the studio's motion pictures.
The Chemical Brothers are currently in Australia and will make their way to the U.S. for the Ultra Music Festival taking place at the end of March. They will also be one of the headliners for the opening night of the Coachella Music and Arts Festival on April 15th. The Hanna soundtrack is their first release since Further, which was released in 2010.

Release Note:

Like much of Agoria's work to date, Impermanence has a diverse and cinematic feel, with dramatic strings and grand pianos joining deep house-style beats. Devaud says he considers the album a big step forward. "Before, my music often felt dark and maybe a bit forced," he says. "This time I just let things happen and everything just fell in its right place... I don't have the feeling any longer of having to work within certain boundaries and the result sounds more like me."

A crew of guest vocalists appear on the album, including underground club icons Seth Troxler and Carl Craig. The former does his usual whispering act, as heard on tunes like "Trust" with Tiefschwarz and "Each Step" with Deetron, while the latter gives a fairly raunchy sexual narrative on "Speechless," which includes the line "I'm gonna take you back to my room, and I'm gonna drink whiskey out of your belly button" (according to a press release Devaud had asked for "something romantic"). The album also features two appearances by Kid A, the 20-year-old American artist behind "Lonely," the penultimate track on Agoria's Balance 016 mix from earlier this year.

The record will be Agoria's first album on his own label, Infine Music, which over the past few years has put out LPs by Apparat, Clara Moto and Francesco Tristano.

Alex Frankel and Nicholas Millhiser are a relatively young duo, having put out just a handful of 12-inches since 2007. Their sound to date has been a slightly retro, tongue-in-cheek mixture of disco and electronic pop, as exemplified by last summer's Static On the Wire EP, which RA's Jack Haighton described as "music in which fun is a more valuable currency than sincerity." In all of his years of being a certified veteran in the world of techno - from his beginning days in Napoli in the early 90's to his celebrated status around the world today - Marco Carola never once lost grip on his main priority: letting the music speak for itself. Throughout his leagues of vital releases and endless stream of DJ dates, his focus always steered clear of sensationalized press angles, or ranking up the charts; he chose to instead keep his head down and his passions high. Carola retains a rare sense of integrity, despite being an artist who's consistently changed the face of techno. He shrugs it off modestly, claiming only to "always try to do something new."

"Inspiration changes a lot," he tells. "When I was a kid, I was inspired by other people's productions, and today I'm more inspired by the energy of evolving. I'm really passionate about the progress of music. I listen to all of the promos that I get sent because I look and search for something that's new to me. For me, music is still all of my passion. I don't really do many other things - I don't run a label, and I don't have people working for me because I don't want to use up the time that should be spent on music. And I think that's the reason that I'm always looking for something new: to expand even more."

It only makes sense that with Marco Carola's latest album, "Play It Loud!", his first full artist album in 9 years (since 'Open System' on Zenit), he embraces to an entirely new expansion of sounds, concepts and formats. The album is not a collection of individual singles (as unique as each may be). True to form, and an encapsulation of his incomparable expertise, the artist "born as a DJ" opted to blend all 10 previously unreleased tracks to form one tight-knit, seamless mix. In keeping with a typical Carola DJ set - sometimes on 3 decks, always an energy-fueled dancefloor retreat - the album has a divine ability to morph and shift, bleed and punch between beats and grooves so smoothly, it's impossible to hear when one track ends and the other begins.

He explains: "I had the concept of creating an album of new music that's also a mix CD, because that's the way I produce. I was born as a DJ, so most of my productions were made for DJs. It wouldn't make sense, to me, to produce an album with single tracks, because those tracks were created to be mixed, in a way. For me, that's the way it should be with my art form: it's an expression of everything I am, as a producer and a DJ. I put the energy into what I can do best, and I made this in the way I am; in the way I'm playing and the way I like my music. I made this album to do one thing: to enjoy the passion I have for music, without making any compromises. I was really focusing on what I could create, and Minus gave me a free opportunity to do that with no restriction."

"Play It Loud!" kicks off with no restrictions, and certainly no hesitation. Jittering, building drums in the album's 'Intro' quickly construct the heavier bass-laden groove of 'The Jingle', a sonic reverie filled with a vast space of percussive layers and stuttering vocals. Sharp rhythms interlock through the divine unfolding of his mix into 'Magic Tribe', a playground of drums and colorful beat textures. The groove never loses its hold through the gripping twists and turns of 'Kimbo', and liquidly bounces through the shuffling bassline of his masterful 'Lighthouse', where around each loop lies a surprising new rhythmic element. 'The Black Box' feels exactly as it sounds, teasing and throbbing with dynamic climbs into a soundworld immersed in shadows, leading into the intricate subtleties of breathy vocal hints and hand claps in 'The Tool'. Melodies slowly emerge and begin to take shape through the aptly titled 'Suspense', raising the energy to meet stomping bass weight through the wide-eyed entertainment of 'One Man Show'. The album, after taking the listener to all corners and colors of the electronic spectrum, kicks into its final chapter on the all-out club shattering closer that will undoubtedly be a mainstay on dancefloors this year, 'Freak On'. From start to finish, so many layers and beautifully subtle intricacies are hidden and tucked inside of the LP's many narratives, if you're not listening close enough - or loud enough - you may miss them completely.

Creating an album his way, and his way only, Marco brings back the art of DJing and the essential elements on which electronic music was founded: energy, atmosphere, passion and, of course, volume.

He agrees: "I called it "Play It Loud!" because I think my music is based a lot on the groove and the bassline. I don't think I ever play a record if it doesn't have a bassline. So I think the way this album makes most sense is when you actually play it on a big soundsystem. Something like an iPod speakers won't probably make much sense of it. This is just my opinion of how the album should be played: loud! The energy of the music is for that."

Fabric 56 is mixed by Chicago veteran Derrick Carter.

Carter allegedly got started on the decks at the age of nine, playing disco records at his family's parties. He became a key figure of his city's house scene throughout the '90s, playing clubs like Shelter and Foxy's and working at Gramaphone Records. One of his most notable achievements lies in Classic Records, the label he launched in 1995 with Luke Solomon and Chez Damier that put out exactly 100 12-inches in its decade-long stint (which famously began at CMC100 and counted downwards with each release), including modern classics like Isolee's Beau Mot Plage. An avid remixer, he's done reworks for everyone from Cajmere to Ricky Martin.

With Fabric 56, Carter did his best to show what you might hear from him in a club: lots of his own remixes, lots of tracks from Chicago artists, and that signature "boompty boomp" sound. "I have some new stuff, some old stuff, some special stuff," he says. "I tried to give it that kind of treatment so it's authentic, and real and valid and present. It's Derrick. All day."

Joel Mull has been a cornerstone of Sweden's techno scene for well over a decade. A longtime friend and former classmate of Adam Beyer (who, incidentally, taught him how to use his decks), the prolific DJ and producer cut his teeth at clubs in Stockholm in the early '90s, then honed his skills with a residency at Unit in Hamburg. In the fifteen years since, he's dished out nearly 50 12-inches and two full-lengths, and played countless pounding techno sets around the world.

Sensory will be Mull's first album since 2007's The Observer. Like much of his work to date, it's sleek, futuristic and not afraid to throw in a bit of melody.

Psychedelic pop duo Rainbow Arabia will release their first album, Boys and Diamonds, next month on Kompakt.

As their name quite concisely suggests, Rainbow Arabia play psychedelic pop with a world music twist. The group consists of Danny and Tiffany Preston, a married couple from LA who cut their teeth in a dub band called Future Pigeon. Most of their tunes use a lo-fi electronic set-up (word has it a Lebanese Casio was in some way responsible for the group's formation) complemented by angular guitars, Tiffany's shrill vocals and loose tribal rhythms. Though their catalog to date is rather slim, the group have already earned a few reviews on Pitchfork, toured with the likes of Gang Gang Dance and appeared on a split 7-inch with Nosaj Thing.

Boys and Diamonds was recorded at Muppet Palace (i.e. the Prestons' home studio). It was written and performed by the duo along with some of their "friends," which includes the drummer Butchy Fuego, who's worked in the past with MIA and The Boredoms.
