Granada Television's 'Celebration: Madchester - The Sound of the North'

Source.

At the height of the so-called 'Madchester' scene or 'baggy' if you will, this captured everything in all its glory. For a start Northside featured in a major item. Footage shows the band in interview, rehearsal, live in concert and even at work (well, the one band member who worked); Central Station Design in their studio creating something out of a pane of glass and loads of ephemera; Happy Mondays in Amsterdam - including Derek Ryder soundchecking for his son!; also includes 808 State and MC Tunes; Celebration was a Granada Television arts strand and undoubtedly Anthony H Wilson (So It Goes, The Other Side of Midnight, Remote Control, Content) must have had some influence in the making of a programme featuring Northside from his own record label.

Menyusul pengunduran diri Faithless, band elektronik LCD Soundsystem memberikan penampilan terakhir di Madison Square Garden tanggal 2 April 2011. Konser terakhir mereka setelah 3 album mereka keluarkan. So long LCD Soundsystem...

kutipan:

LCD Soundsystem will play their last-ever show on April 2 at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The band promises that the concert will last nearly three hours, with lots of treats and special guests promised. (Influential NYC punk-funkers Liquid Liquid open.) Tickets for the show sold out so quickly that the band had to add a run of shows at Terminal 5 beforehand to foil scalpers.

But if you can't make it to the Garden, don't despair: You'll be able to watch the band's farewell as a webcast, right here on Pitchfork. We're the only place hosting the webcast, the only spot to watch the party if you're not going. Tune in live on April 2 to say goodbye. This will be a one-time-only broadcast. It will not be replayed.

ngepet! belom juga kemari, uda last show aja.. RIP, LCD SOUNDSYSTEM!

Music / Giles K

Giles K has been honing his ever-evolving sound for the past few years since finally taking up DJing in 2005.

In early 2008 Giles founded successful Dublin club night "jacKit" with his good friend and fellow DJ Conky. The latter half of 2008 and early 2009 saw Giles support DJs such as Chris Duckenfield, Ralph Lawson, Nick Hoppner and Ewan Pearson, along with gigs at a number of music festivals. More recently, Giles had a mix of his featured on the popular UK site / blog Cosmic Disco (http://www.cosmicdisco.co.uk/2009/02/...)

Giles is insistent and passionate about not being tied down to one particular style of music, and is most at home when mixing it up across the house/techno/disco spectrum – with deep, bumpy and bouncy overtones always evident in his DJ sets. His approach, style and philosophy consists of three main aims: to spin quality underground electronic music in a creative and interesting way, to get the dance floor moving and staying moving.

This step-by-step workbook brought to you by Amy Sciarretto and Rick Florino is a good introduction to what it takes for you work your way into the music business from the writer/intern angle. Stretched out over 132 pages, Do the Devil's Work For Him is a fast, interview-style read that covers the basics of online marketing, workplace etiquette for interns, and resume building from the point-of-view of two writers who blossomed into networking machines during the early 2000s.

If you want to write a lot and learn how to be a good intern, this is the book for you. This is not a book for musicians. The title is a misnomer as it provides no insight into the business of music or the intricacies of contracts, royalties or negotiating (all crucial to know in the music business). Do the Devils' Work is perfect for college students with a knack for writing, who are looking for a way in, but don't know how to get started. If you want to turn your love of music into a full-time job (not necessarily a paying one, though), these writers provide you with their blueprint.

They hit the nail on the head when they try to instill into hopefuls the necessity of becoming a one-man content machine and to make (and keep) as many friends as they can. The music business is all about who you know, and Amy and Rick drive this point home. The most important takeaway is to never burn bridges and always aspire to be your own boss. There are lots of nuggets of wisdom imparted to the writers by musicians from Slipknot, Korn, Deftons, Guns and Roses, Mastodon and System of a Down (many of the paragraphs of the latter chapters start with "When I interviewed so and so..."), but the recurring theme is basically "be nice to all because you don't know who you will need in the future."

The bottom line is that it takes a lot of hard work and lots of luck to make it in the music industry, no matter which job you choose to do (writer, band manager, publicist...). These writers have succeeded through their gift of gab and persistence, and they insist that you can, too. And to an extent, they are right. If you bust your ass you can succeed at anything at some level. If you have the writing chops and can afford to be someone's bitch for a year or two, then buy this book, move to LA and get cracking. I would recommend a change in title for the next edition, though.
