Nick Warren knows how to truly work a club, to take a crowd high, then higher again. That's what comes with vision and, just as importantly, experience. Nick, a music obsessive who grew up on punk, reggae and pop was, like so many DJs turned onto the power of house music in the late 80s.

You can tell when Nick Warren's on the decks. The music emanating from the man is that perfect club mix of driving percussion and soaring musicality, bursting out of the speakers, soaking everyone in melody, drenching them in sound. On the floor, where it really matters, his crowd experience all the peaks and troughs that make his music so unique. Locking on early, you'll hear his deeper take on house which morphs, as the club mood changes, into harder territory, music for sweating and losing yourself to. And at that point when the light are low, when smoke fills the room and people are dancing on instinct, that's when the melodies start to rise over the top, washing the worries and exertions of life away, completing the club experience.

On February 20, 2007 Nick Warren will release 'Paris,' his 7th mix CD in the popular Global Underground mix series. With 'Paris' GU has reached its milestone GU030 release. We recently chatted with Nick Warren about his upcoming mix CD on Global Underground, about future releases with Jodi Wisternoff under the guise of Way Out West and a few other things.   


Beat Factor: The news that you have compiled the 30th compilation from the Global Underground series spread fast. This is your 7th mix CD for GU. How big a deal was for you to mix this compilation?

Nick Warren: It was a privilege to do it, I have always had a great relationship with GU

Beat Factor: How come you have ended up compiling this CD in Paris?

Nick Warren: I have been playing regularly in Paris for a couple of years now; it's a great city with a fantastic club scene, so I wanted to share it with everyone

Beat Factor: One of the resident DJs from the MIX club in Paris said that there's a new generation of clubbers there and because of this new nation of party people, the music has changed. How do you see Paris now?

Nick Warren: It's very very stylish, the clubbers really dress up to go to the club, and get realy involved, lots of screaming and shouting.

Beat Factor: So do you think Paris should be considered one of the next years's clubbing lands?

Nick Warren: Yes indeed, a weekend in Paris with a night out at the mix club is a great way to spend a weekend.

Beat Factor: Let's turn into the past for a little. You started DJ-ing in a band which is legendary today; Massive Attack. What memories does this bring back to you nowadays?

Nick Warren: Great memories, it really put me on the djing map, and was a great way to learn my skills.

Beat Factor: How was it back then?

Nick Warren: Very eclectic, playing all genres of dance music in one set, al different tempo's, it's a shame that has gone.

Beat Factor: And then it came the Way Out West time, together with Jodi Wisternoff. Was it difficult for you guys to impose on the dance music scene back in '94?

Nick Warren: We didn't really think of it in that way, we just wanted to make the music we wanted, we didn't really worry about being stars.

Beat Factor: What is doing Way Out West at the moment? Do you still work together with Jodi?  "I don't really feel like that, I just want to play the best music I can to like minded people. "
Nick Warren: Indeed, we are starting new WOW material this month, look out for the first single in a few months.

Beat Factor: I noticed that most of the time he plays under the Way Out West name, which is probably a smart marketing trick. Doesn't this bother you?

Nick Warren: No, not at all, I think I do ok for myself.

Beat Factor: You'll release a new EP with Jimmy Van M in January on Hope, called ŒOne and Only¹. How did you team up with Jimmy?

Nick Warren: Jimmy and I have been good friends for many years, and always talked about doing something, and we finally sorted it out, he is a great dj and a lovely man.

Beat Factor: Do you have any new releases on the pipeline?

Nick Warren: New Way Out West material at some stage in 2007 and stacks of releases on Hope Recordings from 16 Bit Lolitas, Shiloh, Oliver Moldan, Pole Folder and Tannen. I think 2007 will be amazing; I am really looking forward to an amazing year.

Beat Factor: What's the significance of the term "superstar DJ" from your point of view? I noticed you were called this way many times.

Nick Warren: I don't really feel like that, I just want to play the best music I can to likeminded people.

Beat Factor: Do you dream when you fall asleep? (off course you do, everybody does) If so, what was the last dream you remember?

Nick Warren: I dreamt I woke up and it was all a dream.

Beat Factor: What should be the last question you¹d liked to be asked and what should be the answer to it?

Nick Warren: Did you have fun? Damn right I did; thanks
