New group is ready to fight for the rights of all DJs...

A brand new organisation has launched to support DJs, whether they be of the international crowd-pulling or wedding/karaoke variety.

Until now, there has been no official body to represent DJs, meaning each jock has had to go it alone and risk being ripped off, badly treated and dangerously in the dark on key issues like avoiding a dodgy run-in with the taxman.

Now The Disc Jockey Association (www.thedja.com) aims to change all that.

"Ultimately it's all about building a community and giving legitimacy to the profession," says Debby Lee from the DJA.

"A DJ can earn more than a doctor or an accountant but if you announce to your parents or your bank manager that you are working as a DJ their response isn't usually that positive!"

The DJA has fantastic deals in place with agencies, club promoters, equipment and download stores, magazines and even professional photographers.

It now also gives DJs a single voice when it comes to negotiating vital support like cheap insurance, a PAYE scheme, legal advice and even gym membership!

Run by a team with many years of experience under their belts, including DTPM/Fiction promoter Lee Freeman and Ibiza legend Alex P, the DJA aims to sign up many of more that 50,000 people in the UK alone who consider themselves working DJs.

Even if you or a mate are a bedroom jock with a couple of gigs a month, it could be well worth forking out for the membership as there can be unforseen benifits too.

"A lot of DJs have a 'day job', so don't bother declaring any cash they get for DJing at weekends, as it doesn't seem worth all the hassle," says Debbie.

"But the Inland Revenue guys are not stupid, they know all about things like MySpace. If you are serious about promoting yourself as a DJ you run a big risk of getting caught for the tax."

With the DJA scheme all the tax work is done for you, so as well as being fully legit, having declared the extra earnings could well improve your credit rating enough to borrow money in future for things like a mortgage.

For anyone trying to survive as a DJ, the rewards can be massive but its always been a slog.

Hopefully the help and discounts on offer with the DJA should make life easier and pay for themselves in a matter of months.

We've teamed up with leading online music store DJdownload to offer up to £25 discount (depending on choice of membership) to anyone signing up with the DJA.
