Gatecrasher Destroyed by Fire

19 June 2007
Massive blaze wrecks legendary Sheffield venue...

A huge fire at the Gatecrasher One venue last night (Monday) has consumed the famous nightclub, causing some of the building to collapse.

More than 25 firemen from 5 firefighting crews we needed to bring the flames under control, which local student accommodation and other property in the area needed to be evacuated.

The club, formerly known as The Republic, was housed in a 100-year-old warehouse and was the birthplace of the whole fluro-clad 'Crasher Kids phenomenon.

Large crowds gathered to watch across Sheffield as the blaze and smoke could be seen for miles around the Sheffield area.

A message on the Gatecrasher website today thanks the public for the many messages of support that have already come in.

"There have been many touching testimonies of high times, fun and frolics Gatecrasher One. It is times like these when you the clubber show us how much of an important institution we have created...

"Just remember, that which hurts will only make us stronger, and those who know Gatecrasher will be fully aware that the Lion always grows stronger in times of adversity; of course this is saddening news for us all but we are now only thinking of striding forward into a new era of Gatecrasher as we brush ourselves off and stand tall."

Gatecrasher director Simon Raine told the BBC "It is not a great sight, but from our point of view the main thing is that the building was evacuated. There is no injury or loss of life and in these situations that is the key factor."

The venue was due to host nights by Hed Kandi and Ferry Corsten in coming weeks. All events are now cancelled.

The cause of the blaze remains unknown. More news soon.

"Don't play it safe standing for nothing. Better to die fighting for something"
