Calcio Debate: Top Five Paolo Maldini Games For Milan
The Dragonheart says ciao to Calcio today, so Goal.com's Vince Masiello runs down the most memorable moments of his club career...

Milan captain Paolo Maldini takes his final bow at the Stadio Franchi in Florence after 902 appearances for the Rossoneri, ending a remarkable career that spanned nearly a quarter of a century.

It all started in Udine...

5. The Debut

January 20, 1985 - Udinese v Milan (1-1) "Do you want to play on the left or on the right?" Swedish coach Nils Liedholm asked a 16-year-old Maldini during the interval of the game with the Zebrette at the Stadio Friuli. "You decide," replied Paolo. 'The Baron' put him on the right flank, replacing Sergio Battistini, and a star was born.

4. The Double

October 2, 2005 - Milan v Reggina (2-1) It may seem strange to find a mid-autumn Serie A game in this list, but Maldini netted his only career brace on that rainy day. The captain had not scored in the league for over three years, but bagged two goals in just 20 minutes at San Siro.

He opened the scoring after collecting a pass outside the penalty box and skipping past Giacomo Tedesco to beat goalkeeper Nicola Pavarini with a precise, angled drive, and then doubled the lead with a towering header from Rui Costa's corner.

3. The First Scudetto

May 15, 1988 - Como v Milan (1-1) Milan claimed the Serie A title for the first time since 1978-79 after a neck-and-neck race with Diego Maradona's Napoli.

The Partenopei had a four-point lead with just five games left to play, but the Rossoneri claimed impressive wins over Roma and Inter before conquering the San Paolo on May 1 to go top of the table. Two draws in the final games of the season sealed the trophy and Maldini's first ever silverware.

2. The Barca Demolition

May 18, 1994 - Milan v Barcelona (4-0) Fabio Capello's Milan reached the final of the European Cup for the second year on the trot, aiming to erase memories of the dismal defeat by Marseille in Munich. But the Diavoli came up against a formidable Barcelona side lead by Johan Cruijff, who wrote off his "prosaic" opponents prior to the Athens showdown.

The Dutchman was made to eat his words. Milan produced a masterclass performance, with the makeshift central defensive pairing of Maldini and Filippo Galli superbly deputizing for captain Franco Baresi and Alessandro Costacurta. A Daniele Massaro brace and goals from Dejan Savicevic and Marcel Desailly saw the Rossoneri triumph in Europe's premier club competition for the fifth time in their history.

1. The Last Champions League

May 23, 2007 - Milan v Liverpool (2-1) Maldini lifted the trophy for the second time as captain and for the fifth time in his career at the age of 38 after a 2-1 victory against Liverpool in Athens. Filippo Inzaghi scored a double to get revenge on the Reds for the incredible 2005 shoot-out loss in Istanbul.

"We have been the best team in Italy, Europe and the world over the past 20 years and the cycle has not ended yet," said Paolo after hoisting the cup aloft at the Olympic Stadium. Indeed, it was not over yet and 'Dragonheart' went on to conquer the world for one last time seven months later.

Manuel Pellegrini Appointed As Real Madrid Coach

Real Madrid C.F. and Manuel Pellegrini have reached a deal for the Chilean to become the first team head coach.

President of Honor, Alfredo di Stefano, and Club President, Florentino Perez, will officiallly present the new coach on 2 June at 12:00 CET at the Presidential Balcony of the Santiago Bernabeu.

Subsequently, Director General and Presidential Aide, Jorge Valdano will accompany Manuel Pellegrini during a press conference.

Zinedine Zidane And Jorge Valdano Back At Real Madrid

Zinedine Zidane has officially returned to Real Madrid as an advisor to president Florentino Perez, while Jorge Valdano is also back as director general, the club announced on Monday.

It was no secret that the French legend wanted to return to the club if Perez was reinstalled as president, but he has always insisted it would not be in a coaching capacity.

Valdano is back after spells at the Bernabeu as both a player and coach and he looks set to have the main say in the club's transfer dealings in what promises to be a busy summer.

Miguel Pardeza has been named by the new board as sporting director, but his role has yet to be defined publicly and it is not known if he will have any say in the transfer market.

"During their first meeting today, the new Board of Directors presided over by Florentino Perez, approved the code of ethics and behaviour that will govern the conduct of all members of the board. This ethical commitment was accepted and signed by all board members," a statement on the Real Madrid website
read.

"Additionally, the board named Fernando Fernandez Tapias as First Vice-President, Eduardo Fernandez de Blas as Second Vice-President and Board Spokesman, and Enrique Sanchez Gonzalez as Board Secretary.

"During the same meeting, the board discussed the first changes to the restructuring of the institution and appointed the new executives. Jorge Valdano will serve as Director General and Presidential Aide. Manuel Redondo will be the Director General of the President's Office.

"Miguel Pardeza is to serve as Sporting Director. Jose Luis Sanchez has been appointed as Director of the Social Area. Javier Lopez Farre is to be the Director of the Legal Advisory Board. And finally, Zinedine Zidane will be the Advisor to the President."

Liverpool facing ruin

Liverpool FC owners lose £42.6m. The parent company of Liverpool FC, owned by Tom Hicks and George Gillett, lost £42.6m in the year to August 2008.

The loss was mainly due to the £36m of interest payments that Kop Football Holdings had to make to service the debt taken on to buy the club. Its auditors warned that the need to refinance loans by 24 July cast "significant doubt" on the future of the group as a going concern. But they added the club's owners were confident they would secure the funds.
The US owners bought Liverpool in February 2007, promising to build a new stadium.

Player sales

In their accounts, they say they are "committed to building a new stadium and actively seeking funding to complete the project". But they admit that "the opening of the new stadium will be delayed until 2012".

The parent company's loss came despite the £10.2m pre-tax profit reported by the football club in the same period. The profit was helped by increased television revenues and the sale of players such as Peter Crouch, John Arne Riise and Scott Carson. The results for the parent company showed net debt on 31 July 2008 of £300m.
