Currently based in Berlin, Canadian techno DJ and producer Richie Hawtin spent much of 2004 gigging around the world with like – minded German/Chilean minimalist Ricardo Villalobos. His gigs included appearances at Spanish Festivals Benicassim and Sonar, plus eight-hour raves to the Gates of Hell at The End – London. Hawtin gave a rave live performance as twisted techno – nerd Plastikman at the Canadian Festival Mutek, and he also performed live as part of laptop super ground Nerod Niki (alongside Villalobos, Luciano and Akufen), at Cologne's Popkomm event.
Hawtin's obsession with technology (and sickness) didn't stop him for partying with his peers and he regularly played unannounced at underground parties in Berlin, as well as holding down his Ibiza resicency at Cocoon and hosting Minus parties at the Winter Music Conference and Popkomm. One thing's for certain, Richie sure likes to get messes up. Give him a dark room and some heads to fuck with and Hawtin is a happy man.
Although Hawtin' s label was dormant until after he put out the last Plastikman album 'Closer' in October 2003, Minus made a glorious comeback this year with more Plastikman sound. There were releases too from DJ Minx and Run Stop Restore and Remixes from Akufen, as well as one of the records of 2004, Matthew Jonson's Decompression.
